Of fire born

On the day of St Vulcan, when a child is born they are of fire born.

It is every 60 years. There are only three living Fire born.

Including me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you are fireborn a dragon is born at the same time and becomes your gaurdian. My dragon is Kiasa, a Large blue feathered dragon; calm and yet clever, fun and yet reserved, the perfect dragon (if she wasn't such a diva). Normal fire-clan live to 100 but look 50, being fire born my life expectancy is 6000 and I look 21. And I only get a Birthday every 60 years, so in a way my life expectansy is still 100; but everyone I know will be dead.
Unless they are fire borns.
The water of the rain
 Rain is a bad thing. All of fire clan hates it. ESPECIALLY ME!
Today is my first day  of apprentership in the clan army. We are going to spend all day in the paddock doing skill assessments/ It is raining so hard I cannot hear my mother in the other side of the hut. I am officially going to die,  Kiasa is curled up in a ball moaning. I really hope we are indoors, I can not be dealing with a grumpy dragon today of all days. I get up inwardly screaming at the relentless rat-at-at-tat of rain and pull on my uniform: an orange silk jumpsuit with fore arm, shin and ( somewhat skimpy) chest armour. Kiasa momentarily stops moaning to eat, but then starts right back up again becuse her yack is wet. Honestly that dragon is such a diva.
Training in the dark
 I arrive at training five minutes late, and soaked down to my skin, my jumpsuit clinging to me causing all the boys to stare, I feel heat rise to my cheeks especially as I noticed Uriah staring. Thankfully, he once  saw my blush he averted his eyes, much more polite than any of the others. Luckily our mentor is very good and gets  straight on task; we began practice. We are doing a maze in a pitch black room; collecting fire tools, making arrows and shooting the targets, if we get shot by the darts of the maze we are out.
Uriah is also fireborn and his dragon Mysty hates being away from him, she freaks and has fear seizures. We aren't allowed dragons for this excercise: Uriah stiffens; his pearly white dragon with long curling whiskers could practically destroy the room. As we lead the dragons to their specially made stalls, Mysty's sleek body began to tremble and Uriah begins talking to her in that soothing tone of his. She pays him no heed, and I step in, "Mysty ëč mäëšh dëčøñraäk." I say clicking my tongue and rolling my words with growls, she calms instantly, much sooner than last time I'd tried dragon. Uriah stares at me enthralled. My cheeks flush and he laughs "Wow Delta! How do you do that you dragon whisperer?"
I sigh inwardly as we reached the maze entrance, all excercises are harder for us: our dragons' bonds are pulled taught and our inner flames burning low. We enter and my sight is lost.
Winning
 Winning is not always good, in Uriah's case it means I attack him. It's this thing we've done since we were young, if a person wins a game or in this case excersise, the other surprize attacks, I can't remember why we've just always done it. But today he won the training excersise, and I have a plan...
When Uriah goes to get Mysty, I pour a bucket of water on the floor. It glimmers, slick and slippery. He turns the corner, and before he can even say hi, falls flat on his face. Ha! Winning comes at a cost.
Cold paths
 After I've helped him up, Uriah and I walk back together: we both live on the very edge of the village so it only makes sense to. It is cold tonight, strange seeing as April (like most months) is usually very hot here. Kiasa and Mysty have notised it too, "Êšhöñ Käåk?" I say. It means 'what is it' but the dragons won't answer, I turn and see why they have frozen. They are terrified. A member of the neighbouring ice tribe stands behind us, his wolf growling by his side.
The ice tribe are sort of our opposites: they make ice- we make fire: they have St.Khione's day- we have St.Vulcan's day; they have ice born- we have fire born; ice born have lethal wolves- fire born have apparently wimpy dragons. To top the differennces off- every single member of their tribe is trained to fight from birth, whereas we get to choose what we want to do (my sister for example is training with our medicine mage).
In short, we are standing infront of a highly skilled warrior, who is clearly going to hurt us...
ALOT.
