Prolauge
"Psst. Carrie! Where are you," police officer Brian Bragstad whispered in the dark, cobwebbed house. Fake lighting and thunder boomed in the house. Windows shattered. This was all some sick killers game. A lunatic thats hiding in this old beat down warehouse, playing a game of haunted house. But this was no joke. Brian kicked a chair across the room gun raised for anyone who posed a threat. Shit, he didnt even know how many killers to deal with. Only the one that left the note on his desk, warning Brian he had two hours. After thirty minutes no progress came. The note also said no back up. Just Brian who was selected out this psychos mind. Why is it always me! He thought.
"Hows it coming Brian? Find anything unusual?," The voice in his earpiece said. He could just see the other officer on the other end drinking a cold beer and watching him like this was a fucking movie.
"What do you think the answer to that is Ricky? This whole fucking place is unusual! Holy shit!," Brian just barely got out of the way from a boulder crashing down from a ceiling.
"Brian, you alright?"
"Never been better." Brian heard a real female screm straight ahead. Right after he saw a masculine figure run out in front of him. Brian followed in pursuit in a sprint. The spot where he had just stood exploded. A wave of heat hit Brians back. He ignored it and ran even faster as the explosions continued right after another not staying far behind Brian.
BANG! Brian flew across the room by force and slammed into a turned on oven. Brian screamed.
"Brian! Brian! Are you ok! Can you hear..."
"Stacy, i told you. Its Robby's turn on the TV. Now give it up. Look i dont have time for your whining, Stacy, Mommy has to go. Hang up the phone. Bye Bye." Carrie Berns angrily threw her cell phone in her purse, and resumed her attention to the men sitting in front of her. She blushed and apoligized.
"Really sorry about that. My kids. They can be a pain sometimes, you know?" The two men just nodded impatiently.
"All we need now is that you agree with what we discussed. The money by friday. You know you certainly have a gambling problem. Its going to get you killed one of these days." The man on the left with the short black hair winked. Both men slipped out of the booth after throwing a twenty on the table. The waitress picked it up and jetted off.
Carrie sat in silence at the table, tears rolling down her face. She looked out the window and saw the two men get into their cadillac and speed off. Carrie got up and left, wiping tears from her eyes.
Carrie ran into her house that night, throwing her purse on the counter and rushing upstairs passing the kids. They took their attention off the TV and wondered what was going on. Robby and Stacy followed her upstairs. Carrie threw a suitcase from her closet onto her bed and went digging in her dresser drawers fishing out clothes. Thats when she noticed the kids. She stopped what she was doing, her hair in her face, breathing hard.
"Whats going on mommy?" Stacy asked helping her mother grab clothes from the dresser having no idea what was going on. Robby, 13, just stood in the doorway leaning on the frame bored. Carrie couldnt find the words. Then finally she explained.
"Um, look kids. Mommy is in a little problem. What do you think of living with your grandma in seattle?." Not being surprised Stacy screamed with exitment throwing her mothers clothes all over the room. Carrie couldnt help but laugh. Robbys mouth hung low. He hated the idea. Carrie continued her task while talking at the same time.
"Ok, guys go into your rooms and get your clothes packed and things you want to take. The sooner we get out of here the better," she yelled, looked up and saw Robby about to protest, Carrie stoped, "Robby i dont have time for arguing! I will tell you all on the way. Now go!" Obediantly Robby listend and ran to his room.
With the packing finally being done, they rushed out the door and to the ford explorer. Carrie threw the kids in the car, worked her way around the car, fumbling for her keys. They slipped from her hand and dropped to the ground. Before she could kneel down and pick them up, a man beat her to it. All she saw were his feet.
Oh no, she yelled in her head.
"Well, well, well. Miss Berns, you wouldnt happen to be leaving town would you? To... i dont know, get out of the money you owe me? Dont try to lie to me little girl." The man threw his toothpick out of his mouth and on the ground. His name was Jessie Rapmenn. Tall and built. He slid a gun from his holster. Carrie screamed.
Jessie attacked Carrie, putting her in a headlock covering her mouth pointing the muzzle to the side of her head.
"You better shut your face, bitch!" He yelled and forced her around to the passenger side and threw her in just after he hit her in the head with his gun. Carrie fell unconsious.
"Kids, were going for a little ride! Sit back, relax. Keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times! Your seatbelts secured? Good" both Robby and Stacy were shocked. They didnt know what was going on especially not four year old Stacy. But she knew it wasnt good.
"What are you doing!" Robby yelled. "Where are you taking us!" Jessie did not answer Robby. Stacy started to cry next to her older brother. Carrie still lay unconsious.
After driving several minutes, Jessie fished out his cell phone and dialed a number. After thirty seconds of silence, a man answered on the end. The voice was very low.
"Do you haver her?"
"Yes sir, i do" he answerd back clearing his throat.
"Good now you know what to do with her. Oh and about that cop we were discussing. How about you stop by for a visit and leave that note for him"
"Will do sir. Over and out"
"Dont screw this up!" Jessie ended the call, looked over at Carrie. She was starting to come back. He needed to get rid of these kids.
Officer Brian Bragstad lived alone. Thirty four years old and he hadnt had a relationship in eight years. That was a disaster. He ended up arresting her for possesion. They dated for six months. What a cop he was than! Now his only relationship since was his Brittany Spaniel Roxy. not long after the arresting of his past girlfriend he picked her up from the humane society. She still loves to hunt at eight years old. And energetic. Every tuesdays when Brian was off duty he would go to his favorite bar Greggs place. He meets his friends from high school. Jimmy, Ryan, Sean, and Ahmed. For years they made fun of him for being the only black guy there. And that he doesnt have any african american friends.
Brian stepped inside the PD, wiping his feet on the matt from the rain. He swiftly fast walked to his desk to get his paperwork done from his previous case. He hated paperwork more than anything. Being a police officer was not a desk job! He thought. He noticed a note on his stack of papers. On the not it said Brian Bragstad. The paper was folded. Surprised he had a note he slowly unflolded it. It read: Hello Brian. You can call me jessie. I just want to let you know that if you ever want to see Carrie Berns ever again (That is assuming you may run into her on the street perhaps or grocery store) i suggest you come to the warehouse on 49th street. Believe me Brian. This is no joke. There is a lady sitting right next to me as i write this taped to a chair, with duct tape over her mouth. She needs you Bri. Can i call you that? You better help her or she will be laying on your doorstep covered in blood. And when you come, i suggest no backup or your life will end as well. Jessie over and out! Oh! Silly me. I forgot to mention an important detail! You will only have two hours to find her. If you dont make it... well.... it wont be good. Farewell and good luck. No stupid cop has ever passed the Rapmenn test!
Brian ripped the note up and slammed his desk. He didnt know still whether this was a joke or not. But his gut said this was real. Warehouse on 49th? Brian wrote that down on a fresh piece of paper, folded it up and stuffed it in his pocket. It was thursday now. He had two hours. That didnt seem that bad to him at that moment. It shouldnt be hard finding the girl, would it?
"...Can you hear me! Brian!" Brian came back to conciousness to hear that last part. He mumbled something he couldnt undestand. "Brian dont move were coming in!"
"Huh? What... no dont come in here! He has this place full of traps. Let me be. I got this!" Brian got to his hands and knees and forced himself up off the ground. His burns wernt that bad. He replaced the gun back up searching in every direction. The thunder and lightning had stopped. For how long? Everything was black. All he saw was a white light straight ahead of him down a corridor. Limping, Brian kept his eyes peeled. He moved in towards the craked open door where the light came from.
The door creaked open as he slowly opened it. The gun quickly searched the room. Left than right. What Brian saw in the room shocked him. The walls were coverd with clocks. Digital clocks. Each one said 00.30.59 meaning he had thirty minutes to find Carrie. I had been out that long? He was shocked and pissed off. He wiped sweat from brow and continued his search.
"Jessie! Lets talk about this!" Brian yelled, "i know you dont want to do this! Someone is telling you to do this right?!" Brian waited for a response. Anything. Any noise to give Brian an idea where Jessie was. He had searched everywhere.
There was no noise. Not a peep. Absolutley nothing. Almost impossible quietness. Brian slammed a wall and ran down a corridor breaking down every door. Each door he kicked down, no results.
"You son of a bitch!" He yelled running faster now, no where in particular he was going. He just needed to get to Carrie.
00.15.00
Brian stopped and checked his gun. All loaded. Brian couldnt wait to put a full set of ammo into Jessie. With that he kept on pushing.
Then Brian stopped himself and slapped his own face. How could i be so stupid! He yelled to himself. He knew where they were and passed it a hundred times.
Brian turned around and sprinted all the way to the entrance of the warehouse. Then he retraced his steps and walked rather slowly to remember just where he saw it. Passing a kitchen and what looked like a family room Brian found it. The invisible door.
00.00.30 Brian looked at it for a couple of seconds then kicked the camoflauged door down to see Carrie strapped to a chair and Jessie standing over her pointing a gun to her head, while pointing another gun in his other hand at Brian. Jessie smiled.
"Oh, hey Brian its great to see you. Congratulations you made it with twenty seconds dispair. You know no body has made it this close. Take a seat Bri" Jessie motioned toward a chair scratching his face with his other gun hand then placing back on Carries head. His smile widend. Brian took the seat that was just a bit further from Carrie.
Before Brian could even think, Jessie put a bullet into Brians shoulder. He screamed and jumped off the chair. Jessie left Carrie and stood over Brian lying on the ground looking up at him.
Jessied cocked his gun.
"Farewell my firend"
The shot was loud from in the room. Carrie screamed from behind the duct taped mouth. Jessie's eyes nearly bulged out of his sockets. He collapsed to the ground with his face half off. Brian threw his gun aside and tried the best he could to pull himself up.
Finally, Brian was able to stand. He limped over to Carrie. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Brian peeled off the tape gently with his good arm. Helped her out of the chair.
"I got ya" Brian said and helped her and himself to the exit.
When outside they both breathed the nice fresh air. Brian called the rest of the unit to head over and do whatever they do. Meanwhile Brian and Carrie sat outside of the building out of breath.
"Holy shit what a night" Brian stated.
Carrie looked over at Brian. Her face was bruised. "Thank you. We both went through hell tonight."
"Sure did" Brian said and they both chuckled. Brian wrapped his good arm around Carrie and fell unconsiouss on Carries shoulder.
Paramedics came for both Carrie and Brian.
Brian, when he came back home the next night his Brittany Spaniel greeted him with slobbering kisses. He laughed and wrestled with her until the phone rang. His heart stopped.
"Hello?" He said into the reciever.
"Hi Brian this is Carrie. I just wanted to thank you more properly for what you did."
"I was just doing my job"
"Weather it was your job or not, it was brave of you. Hey someone wants to talk to you" Brian heard rustling on the other end.
"Hello Mr. Brian! Were you the one that saved my mommy!" It was a little girl
"Um... yeah. I wasnt going to let anything happen to your mommy" Brian wiped a tear from his cheek. Then threw a tennis ball at the other end of his house and his dog ran after it.
"You and my mommy should go on a date!" Brian laughed. He heard on the other end Carrie yelling at her daughter to stop. Thats when she took back the phone.
"So sorry about that Brian."
"No problem. Your daughter has a point. What do you say i take you out for dinner saturday." There was a long wait. Brian heard encouraging from her kids in the backfound.
"Saturday it is"
"Sounds good! Ill pick you up at eight"
"Oke doky. Well i gotta go Brian, i will talk to you later, bye!" They hung up. Brian stood in silence. He smiled and went up to bed. He was exhausted.
