Characters in the play:

ESTHEL, a 27 years old woman; profession - though never mentioned in official documents - whore, or rather, as she describes herself: "I'm a model. But, you know, there is so little certainty nowadays, everybody is a model, that I thought of doing something else on the side, you know..."

ALBERTO, a 30 years old man, profession: accountant, or - as he defines it - "...taking a small share from people who didn't do well on arithmetic in the high school".

VOICE OF MAN IN THE BOX: a low register, rough voice.

POLICEMAN

* Written to be played by a man & a woman, the male playing three roles, an audio only one (VOICE OF MAN IN THE BOX), and two apparition roles: ALBERTO and POLICEMAN, merely distinguishable from each other through uniform and style.

* To create the background sound a suggestion would be to record live for two hours the traffic sound and other street noises and play the tape before, during and after the end of the show; the idea is that the street remains alive regardless of any humanly colored events and even after "a drama" ends.

ACT ONE

Scene ONE

(The traffic-sound-tape starts running one minute before the curtain opens: cars running, shouts, ambulances heard from afar, whistles, an uncertain sonorous decor. As the curtain opens or rises it unveils the corner between 28th Street and Broadway, New York, Manhattan. On the right is seen the subway entrance for N, R trains. On the subway railing are seen the two familiar letters N & R, in yellow, written on black circles. The lamp post light is red. In front of the square railing around the subway entrance there is an air vent (Marilyn Monroe vent) from which steam rises. Behind the subway entrance, on the left, is seen the front of the street corner shop called LUCKY STORE(with its description: Chock-full of socks, a women underwear store). In the front window, towards the audience, are seen bras, panties, a leather made bathing suit hanging on plastic fingers; a naked female-dummy is propped up in an obscene position on the side of the window. The window is covered with ads which read: "Guard from cold', "Protect against dirt", "Smell fresh when wet". The left side wall, behind the subway entrance, has a door by the street corner and two windows to the right of the door. Through the dimly lighten windows are seen variants of the same women paraphernalia and female dummies not covered by any clothing. On the windows, other "ads" are written in yellow, such as: "Non Refundable", "Non Redeemable", "Non Reversible", "No Risk". There are stairs along the left side wall (a two steps staircase, the ground step 5" high, the upper step 10" high) with a third little step (3" high) under the door. During the show the stairs will play the role of furniture. On the higher step and towards the subway entrance, there is a long assembled brown box, like those used by homeless people. A dozing sound is heard from inside the box, low volume, discreet. Near the door, a brown bag. The date of the play can be suggested by the neon blue crooked writing, on the store door which reads: THANKSGIVING SALE, that is, late November. It is dark, after midnight. ESTHEL wears a red skirt and an awkward matching outfit: a pink blouse, a blue purse, pink shoes, white straps holding her black stockings. The blouse has a neck opening in the shape of a heart. She walks back and forth along the subway entrance watching the passing cars for a potential client. She goes towards the stairs leading to the door, opens the brown bag, takes a coffee paper cup from inside the bag, takes a sip. She goes back to the street side, looks anxiously towards the traffic coming from the stage background, holding her hand (with the cup) up, as if signaling to a cab. Her left hand goes inside her blouse as she tries to put her breast back inside her tight bra. She moves to the subway vent where is warmer and stands on it with her legs open, sipping coffee. She is genuflecting now, resting with her spread legs over the vent, enjoying the warm air on her butt. She goes to the door, puts the coffee cup inside the bag, takes her purse, moves back on the subway vent. She stands now with her back towards the brown box, takes
