Our Daily Bread

The Staff of life, it is often said,
is that nourishing loaf,
our daily bread.
Made from wheat and wholesome grain.
The chaff discarded, the kernel,
sharps and outer hull
milled on stone
with ridged tread.
Windmills turned in bye-gone days,
the Race pouring into
the wheel, up and over.
Black rye for the
humbler folk.
Stripped wheat ground, pulverised
to white flour for rich mens'
tables, and their fancy ways,
accompaniment for cones
of solid sugar, black tea
served by the Mistress
under lock and key.
