Chapter 1

Elena stared at the code scrolling across her screen, but the strings of ones and zeros had long since blurred into an indistinguishable mess. She rubbed her tired eyes and leaned back in her chair with a sigh. It had been a long day at the office and her mind was exhausted from poring over logs and debugging vulnerabilities. All she wanted was to go home and collapse into bed.

A knock at her door jolted her from her stupor. Daniel peered in, his brow furrowed with an uncharacteristic frown. "We need you in the situation room. Now."

Elena's heart sank. Another emergency meant another late night. She grabbed her tablet and followed Daniel down the hall at a brisk pace. The situation room was already abuzz with activity when they arrived. Screens displayed maps dotted with flashing red icons, charts tracking abnormal traffic patterns, and live video feeds from news stations around the world.

"What's going on?" Elena asked the lead analyst John.

"We've received reports of major disruptions to critical infrastructure across Europe, Asia and the Americas," John replied grimly. "Power grids, transportation systems, financial networks - it's like something just pulled the plug all at once. Early analysis points to a coordinated cyberattack on a massive scale."

Elena stared in shock at the global mayhem unfolding before her eyes. "Who's capable of something like this?"

"That's what we need you to find out," Daniel said. "Whatever - or whoever - is behind this, their capabilities dwarf anything we've seen before. I want you leading the investigation.
