Triscon wandered the side of the road as he heard, off in the distance, the sound of the vampire warriors. He smiled as he, being only ten now, was able to defeat these men with a single blow. This was only because he left Ashes, the head vampire leader…head of the humans as well now, while running off with his new friend, Blood, whose strength was impossible to conquer. It had been a successful escape with Blood’s abilities. Triscon laughed as he remembered what it was like being hit and tortured back at Ashes’ place then frowned as he had come to miss Lora’s sweet and kind nature. They had to leave her behind though, she was the only thing that helped Blood and him know what all the vampires would decide to do. This could be the end, he thought to himself as he looked down at his hands gladly then he raised his chin high, or just the beginning of the war.
“Triscon, what are you doing?”
“I’m keeping a look out for any others. You know they’ll run into us sometime soon and we better be ready.”
“You’re just a boy, Triscon, sit down and eat. Fill your rumbling tummy.”
“Stop acting like I’m some little boy, Blood, I want to fight. You’ve trained me enough, let me help you. Let me be you.”
“When we left that place, Triscon, all I wanted to do was kill. To murder every one of them…maybe even Ashes…but then what would that make us? Like them? We’re not like them, Triscon, we’re half human. We are to have a heart.”
Triscon stalked off, and I could see he was upset for being so cut off from the world, but he hid it very good at most times. I smiled, my heart had grown attached to the boy, and he was like my own child. If anything were to happen to him I would die. No, I couldn’t begin to think of that, being able to fight was good in order to protect him but to kill like he wanted…he shouldn’t want it. He just wants revenge, I know the feeling, I nearly burned a house of vampires…with households, being human helpers, but I didn’t bring myself to it. Triscon, turns out, was watching me the whole time with disbelief. Afterward, I remember, I caught him trying to burn down the same building; luckily I came up in time.
“What were you thinking, Triscon?” I asked him as I blew out the flames he was about to use to demolish the rackety shack those creeps, that were mostly nomad vampires, called homes around downtown L.A.
“You didn’t finish the job, so I thought I should.” He replied as he once again lit the torch and was about to pierce the walls thick wooden boards. I grabbed the torch back and threw it in water, holding Triscon’s eyes with a firm stare.
“There is no job to finish. These are people, Triscon, you must know when to stop or you will become one of them. Do not disappoint me, ever, again.”
“I’m sorry…Blood, I just…I just want them to leave us alone. I want to be free of them, of their curse, their existence.”
“In order of doing that we should kill each and every one?”
“No…I suppose not…I’m sorry mother.”
That was the first time he had ever called me his mother and I hugged the boy tightly as we walked away from the scene, or almost scene, smiling as we came out to be the better people that day. But now his heart grew cold each day, he wants to murder them, since one of the warriors had killed off his existing family when we escaped. We found out about two days later, he never cried so hard and long in my arms. I would brush Triscon’s hair from his face and sing to him, while he would fall asleep and snore in rest. These moments I treasured forever.
“You fell asleep, again, on your watch-out hours, Blood.”
“I’m sorry, Triscon, I just feel tired so much lately.”
“It’s because you drank that wretch’s blood. You should have never done that.”
“I know…I despise that day when I was stupid enough to fall for the blood thirst.”
“You thought you loved her didn’t you?”
“Yes…till I found out she was planning to kill us if we weren’t willing to cooperate in enslaving the humans. Till I found out her blood was a device which would turn any person who hated her to love her ten times stronger than that hatred.”
“I hate her Blood, a lot, would I love her as much if I drank her blood?”
“Trust me, we’ll never know, you’ll never drink from her.”
“It’s nice to have a person you can count on, even though she never keeps up her watch out hours.”
“Oh just be glad we weren’t attacked.”
Triscon rounded about our stuff, telling me he heard some vampires sneaking around a few miles east, and that we needed to move camp. I was proud of him, he was only ten yet he knew so much, so much that maybe I didn’t even know. As I grabbed hold on my things, making sure nothing was left; we put on our cloaks and headed off into the night. We were homeless, yes, but never without a home. To us a home was where we felt was safe as we slept; where we could be by each other and dream off in a happy place, where we could be away from the enemies.
“Triscon, do you ever wish I never came along. To be back there as a true warrior for their kind? To kill merciless and not just train to protect?”
“If I said anything of that matter, I would be completely lying to you. I love you, Blood; you’re my mom…my mother in all of this.”
“And I’m glad to be your “mom” but are there really no regrets?”
“None, because I know now, thinking from last night, that in order to be a true warrior…you must know when to stop the battles. To put down your sword and surrender not only to the enemy if lives were at stake but to surrender to a peace between your nation and theirs.”
“I’ve taught you well, it seems.”
“Naw, I just read a lot.”
“Little liar, you!”
I jumped onto him as I tickled him without effort, Triscon would try to dodge my hands but I was too fast, all of this ended up in laughter. We might be escapers and known to all, not to be associated with, but we were happy in our own little world. To me it was great, to him it was fun, to both it was life. As we headed around the city, finding each vampire warriors a little out of it from being just awoken during night because it was barely six. This was our chance to use their stupidity and get something to eat. I spied a small restaurant and ran for it, tugging Triscon close behind me. We entered the small building and sat down as we called for a waiter, one came as soon as we asked, and Triscon nearly ordered everything off of the menu. I smiled as I told the waiter to just bring me a glass of water and a salad, knowing my money was low…I wanted to give it up to Triscon as much as I could. As the waiter brought back our food, I could tell he kept his eyes slightly longer on us than average, right away I called for the check. He had recognized us, slightly, but still he knew who we were and could call on Ashes’ main men to come and receive her award, her half breeds. But I won’t let that happen, I thought as I put our food in the bag, I won’t be lazy on the job of protecting Triscon ever again.
“Thank you, the food was great.”
“But madam don’t you want to finish your meal I mean your perfectly fine.”
“No thanks, we have things to do. Come, boy, let’s get going.”
“Yes, mother.”
This confused the man, to him they had said we weren’t related only that we were the same breed, but this was due to my plans. If I could distract him from reaching the phone, perhaps he won’t call once we set foot out of this place, giving us time to run for it.
“Have a nice day…”
He looked on the bill as I had paid with money, and noticed the fake name I wrote down, while bringing his head up in relief. He fell for it, now he wouldn’t think we were what he thought we were…us.
“Beth.”
Once we were safe away from harm, I took out the bags of food and handed Triscon his half over.
“Now eat, you must be starving considering you took my pay.”
“I’m sorry, Blood.”
“Don’t be, you’re a growing boy, I should’ve known. Sometimes when I look at you I don’t see that boy but your soul, which shines with manhood.”
“Thank you…you’re a pretty tough chick yourself.”
“Thanks now eat up silly.”
My smile faded as I looked out into the dark alley ways we had been living in. I would never have anyone to love, would I? To hold and cherish, to comfort me when I needed it…no I was alone…with a boy who was just as lost as I am. But even though we were lost in this world, we always knew what was right and wrong, wasn’t that the key to being found? To finding a new revolution? I only hope so.
“Hey, you two!”
Frozen in place, hearing the footsteps close behind me; I spun around to see none other than Lenoir.
“Lenoir, could that be you?!”
“Yes, it’s me, Blood! How are you?”
We ended in a hug as I introduced Lenoir, noticing he didn’t have a warrior outfit on, and we sat down as he told us of his escape.
“When you two left, all hell broke loose. Ashes went mad! Literally Blood, she was crazy when she found that her perfect pet had gone missing. Not only did she take revenge on humans but she’s put every man from age sixteen and up to is on her warrior teams. To patrol the city, looking for you and Triscon.”
My smile faded and I eyed Triscon kicking the soft pebbles across from us. His eyes, there was something there, and then I shook my head knowing it wasn’t the idea I had gotten. Guilt. He couldn’t be thinking he was guilty for getting us in trouble? Hell I was the one who announced to run away, not him, he shouldn’t be feeling that.
“This is bad; Lenoir, what can Triscon and I do at such times?”
“Run, run, and did I mention run? I’m serious, Blood, Ashes wants you guys back…you’re like her secret weapons…you’re invincible and she hates that kind of power not in her hands.”
“She should get over it and stop acting like a snobby vamp. Clearly she knows even if she’d capture us, we’d run away again, and if we couldn’t there would be no way we’d ever work for her.”
“Ashes says she’s got a way, to make you work, Blood, she wants whoever to take Triscon and have him beaten until you agree to become her slave. For eternity.”
I couldn’t breathe as I sat there thinking of what Lenoir had just explained, she would do it, I thought, she would take Triscon as prisoner just to get me to work for her. This sudden epiphany dawned on me, just there as I am thinking we had no way out, but we did! And that thought was marvelous!
“Lenoir, take him. Take Triscon and flee the country. Canada, the humans there have safety cautions with vampires. They made truce; vampires can’t come in contact with humans, or even half humans. I want you to take Triscon and head there; first thing in the morning…I mean…can you do that? For me?”
“I’ll do anything for you, Blood.”
He took my hand in his and I felt comforted but just for a moment until I heard Triscon stand up abruptly. Here came the tantrum.
“YOU CAN’T! I belong here just as much as you! This isn’t fair! I demand to stay here with you or else I might kill myself!”
“Triscon, remember that day at the building when you attempted to burn it down like I was tempted to…this is like that. You have to make a decision, one that will bring justice. I need you to go with Lenoir in order so you’ll be safe and they won’t use you to get to me. Don’t you understand now?”
“Yes but…”
Tears swelled in his eyes and I opened my arms as his small body curled in my embrace. It took a few minutes until he finally let go, the tears gone, now his eyes burned with independence. His weakness held onto him though, that dependant boy who just wanted a family.
“Fine, I’ll go, but if anything happens to you…”
“I know my sweet innocent boy will come running back to be the hero. Trust me, Triscon, I know.”
He laughed and Lenoir stood as he wiped the sweat from the sun. He was old, old enough to know when the time was right for them to be moving. Too bad, instead of tomorrow, they had to leave this instant. Lenoir turned to me and frowned.
“Blood, we…”
“Go, and Lenoir, take good care of him or it’ll be your head.”
“More like my heart, you tend to strike the point there.”
“Yeah, just get going.”
That’s when the boys took off, heading down the road like nothing, no vampire warriors even thought to look their way and I smiled. Well now I can do something. Right when the sun went down I left to go change into an outfit I had secretly bought, under Triscon’s eyes, and laughed as it was quite hard to fit around the metal dress. It wasn’t so much as a metal dress but more like a dress that was impossible to shoot through and much more as suitable to wear while fighting. It wouldn’t stand out, it was a major turn on for vampires these days and most shops had them. Although I had provided the hard steel that decorated the dress, it was light enough to move around, and hard enough to block anything. This was going to do it, I thought as I ran off into the dark club I had entered when I first became aware of Ashes and vampires, this was going to defiantly do it.
“Hey bartender, haven’t seen you much, what happened to the last one?”
“He died, Ashes got a hold of him, said he knew something of who Blood was. Wanted to know all she said to him, long time ago though really. What might be your name?”
I still proceeded to use the name Beth because, well, it was all I could think of.
“Beth and yours?”
“Kuyan. Old Hmong name my grandfather gave to me. Luckily I look a little like my mother’s side, less squinty eyes.”
“Don’t mock the Hmong people, Kuyan, they have a worthy past. Look it up, they are people of great wisdom.”
“Huh, really, I’ll have to check up on that.”
I grabbed a to-go sprite and walked, seductively, out to a table in the middle of the living room they had built into the club now. Too bad most of the people were making out but it did create a sense of being free, not having to look like I was frantically trying to find something I could use against Ashes, but rather being some hot human over in the make out room who’d ask a few questions while taking the vampire on. But there was no possible way, ever, that I’d make out with a skanky vampire. I wasn’t a fang banger, not the least bit.
“Hey pretty lady, what ya doing over here by yourself?”
Here we go, stupid drunk vampire man who looked like he was a party man who never stopped to put down his beer. This will be too easy.
“Nothing much, enjoying the lovely view. Come and sit, only if you wish.”
“Oh honey, I wish it.”
He had really bad moves, no wonder he was hitting on a human looking girl such as myself, he’d need something to satisfy him. Vampire woman wouldn’t take him, he’s an ignorant wannabe.
“Well what’s your name?”
“Vampire Asshole at your service.”
“Oh really, thought so.”
He excused my rude comment, or so I thought, until he closed his eyes for a moment and swaggered while catching his breath. He didn’t hear me at all because he was too drunk.
“No my name is Jederan. It’s for like awesome man who wants to touch you.”
“Well that’s too bad because we’re in a place I can’t be.”
“Aw ok then, how about getting out of here.”
“Perfect.”
As we headed out, me halfway carrying his lard ass, I found the moon to shine just right when I threw him into the trash and he fell, surprised at my force.
“What the…”
“Now, babe, let’s get this straight. I’m here on a matter of business, what do you know about Ashes?”
He was still drunk and laughed; Jederan got up and brushed his pants off.
“Mostly anything, go right on ahead darling, ask me…Anything.”
Sick twisted and idiotic pervert! No, I thought; have to keep my head on tight.
“Does she have a weakness, anything?”
“Yeah, think so, something about her master turning her. Something went wrong, I think I heard others say she was supposed to be a half blood but she came out full turned bitch.”
“For once I agree with you, she’s a bitch.”
“Yeah, anyhow, what else you want to talk about?”
“Nothing, now go back inside and forget this all happened.”
“I never get anything out of deals, no fair.”
Jereden walked back inside, more like crawled, he was sick now from his alcohol level. I sat down in the alley behind the club and rejoiced at the thought that nothing wrong had happened and I gained very valuable information! But my rejoicing came up short as I heard Jereden in the club inside the doors saying “I swear she’s out there” and I scrambled up as the door slid open. And there, coming out of the door, walked Ashes as her four men came beside her. Damn, I should’ve known the vampires knew me by heart, everyone now knows me.
“Sweet sweet Blood, it is nice to have finally crossed paths again.”
“Hello Ashes.”
“I suppose you’re wondering how we came so quickly.”
“You’ve got legs and feet, you can run just as fast as a car, but then again you wouldn’t waste your precious breath and come in one.”
“Smart, confident, strong…all traits I admire you for and want for my people. Come, Blood, we’ve got business to attend to.”
“I’m not going into your car tonight, Ashes, or into your home. I’ve been there…”
I stood straight and held my head high as I looked her square in the eyes.
“Done that. I’m not going back.”
“Then you will come by force, men get her.”
The four men, with Hector in the lead, ran out at me from all sides and I made a plan in my head. Go for the right then work your way to the left, and I did, making blows and blocking as they tried to fight back. It was hard to see that Hector, who clearly was the better fighter and in lead for some reason now, had come right up from behind me in a terrible slash cut through my skin as I slunk to the floor with the rest of the three I had killed. Damn so close too.
“Ah Hector; I see that you’ve been learning much more although you do not need to. She’s too easy.”
“Not so much, Ashes, she’s killed all of them.”
“So it seems but now look, she’ll be with us and we’ll finally have an unstoppable army.”
I glared through my hazy vision at her, under my eyelashes, and thought only about Triscon’s safety which made me feel better. Slightly. He was still under a vampire’s control but it was Lenoir, he was friend, not foe…right? I have to keep my head good and not fret about the boys; I should be more worried of what to plan next.
“Ashes, tell me, why am I the only one you want?”
“Well for one thing first when I want something, I get it. And I won’t allow it to run away. Second of all, you drank from me and my blood is only to be shared with my people. Third, you really ought to love me and the fact that you hate me right now isn’t a concept I’m used to so I’ll be setting up studies on you. Hope you’re happy because I sure am.”
“So what I’m like your lab rat now? Because I didn’t fall for your hideous attitude? News flash…”
I almost laughed as I said Triscon’s favorite catch phrase.
“I’m no one’s pet and I am sure as hell not yours.”
As I said it, my body went into motion; I flipped over Hector and tied his hands with the rope that I found lying beside me. As I tied his hands, knocking him out stone cold with a fierce jab to the back of his head, I turned to see Ashes was already retreating into the club…to get help. Swiftly, so fast and smooth, I threw open the door and slid down the rows as I headed towards the dance floor with no beating. The feet had stopped the dancers all staring at my entrance with Ashes in the middle.
“Now I don’t find it fair when there’s about a hundred of you and only one of me. Ashes?”
“You asked for it. Take her, but leave her alive!”
They all started to jump around and encircled me as I stood there motionless, I could work from the left to the right? No, too many. It was too many for four of the toughest vampires in training took me on. But to think of all these newbies who would just fight like they saw on TV, well with training vamps at least I could know what moves they’ll place on me. These were unpredictable hits, swinging left to right; take me under the wave of blood. As I would gasp for air when one would hit me in the gut, it wouldn’t suffice and I’d start to fall to the floor, but then something in me said to hang on and stay strong. Like there was help on the way but the only help would be if Ashes called off her leeches or if Triscon and Lenoir came back, neither would do so and I was sure of it. My eyes couldn’t see no more and all I could do was keep fighting and hear the screams and the thumps as bodies would hit the floor. I’ll make it, I kept telling myself, and I just have to keep fighting. Survival of the fittest, right? As soon as I was sure I could no longer go on, there was a loud crash coming from the eastern wall of the building and I turned my head to see but my eyes were bruised and black. I couldn’t see anything except a thin light coming my way and then, I was being pulled from the scene by this warm radiating hand that lifted me up and up. This is God, I told myself as I started to drift away, and I’m finally going to be at peace.
“Is she still knocked out or what, Tom?”
Tom, God’s name was Tom. No, that didn’t seem right. I tried to sit up but a hand held me down on some hard surface, before I could say anything, there was a voice beside me who might’ve been coming from this Tom.
“Hey, you with us?”
I shook my head and groaned from the horrible beating that happened, everything hurt like hell and I wanted to die. But here I was, I eyed the car door and everywhere around me barely enough to tell it was a van, in the backseat of a van on the floor. They probably didn’t want the blood to get on their seats, and damn there was a lot of blood.
“Need an answer Tom, she could pass out again.”
“Oh shut up Jeremy, I’m working on it. She’s still trying to feel her damn fingers! Hell they beat you up good, huh?”
“What hap…”
“Reckon you must’ve pissed those vamps off back there for them to do something like that to you. So what’s your name?”
“Blood.”
The van lurched to a halt and everyone braced themselves except for me, who hit the backseat with a force so hard I almost threw up. I winced in agony but kept my head in place, they must know me to have stopped to fast.
“No wonder they were all over you, Ashes been going crazy searching for her. Tom maybe we shouldn’t help her out I mean she’s half.”
“Oh keep driving Jeremy and shut the hell up. Besides if we’ve got her, then maybe, they’ll give Larissa back.”
“Better be worth the trouble we’ll be getting ourselves into, trying to protect the half breed.”
I glared and sat up, without even thinking, and took firm hold of Jeremy’s arm; careful not to mess his driving up, and growled.
“I have a name, its Blood, and do not ever call me half breed. Ashes learned that the hard way.”
Then I passed out once again and fell onto the van floor.
“Hey! Missy! You might wanna wake up now, Helen’s making breakfast and its waffles!”
The child’s voice was a good thing to wake up to, he sounded like Triscon when he was younger, but I noticed the small country accent. I fluttered my eyes open and felt stiff, the fight really had taken a lot out of me and I was glad with myself that I held out that long. Must’ve done a lot of damage to the vamps too, that made me smile.
“She’s up, Tom!”
The boy ran around the bed I was laying on and he jumped up onto the side and took my hand as he stared down at me with big hazel eyes. They somehow reminded me of Laurin. He had just the right shade of blue like hers but then there was the green speckles around the pupil which made them stand out, but I still could see he was human. My coughs were straining and the boy drew back as blood started to soak the hand I raised to my mouth. Great so now I’m coughing up blood, oh well just keeps getting better and better.
“Hey, what’s your name?”
“My name is none of your beeswax. Vampire.”
Tom ran into the room as I stared wide eyed at the hateful boy as he had turned to this from a sweet and innocent child. What the hell is going on?
“Sam tell her you’re sorry, this instant!”
“But she’s vampire and you brought her back to be punished right?”
“No, now tell her you’re sorry!”
“Fine.”
Sam turned his small body towards my direction and hung his head.
“I’m sorry, bloodsucker.”
Then he ran out of the room. Tom tried to grab him but the boy was faster and he was gone before anyone could explain what just happened. I just sat back and waited for Tom to say something but he was silent as a fox. His lips were moving though, but no sound came, it was a thinking habit. I know because I did the same thing growing up, Tom was my age but he seemed as if he knew nothing that I did. Although he could possibly fight, he was a beginner, not like me.
“So, what you thinking about?”
Tom looked up quickly and his eyes widened. I just shrugged and watched the ceiling fan move as he came up closer to the bed.
“How do you know I’m thinking?”
“Don’t we all?”
“You know what I meant.”
“Your lips move, I used to do the same thing. That explains your answer?”
“Only a little.”
He reached over to get something and I felt the same warm radiation vibrating off of him like sweet, sweet…oh god no.
“Yes, that would be your hunger kicking in, Blood right?”
I nodded and turned my head away as he stood back with a paper that read my heartbeat and other things necessary to tell if I was alright. Tom was silently nodding to himself, his lips moving but no words, and it seemed like a common thing for him to do. He was close enough I could reach out and…
“Don’t worry, we’ve got a blood bag in the microwave, it’ll be nice and fresh.”
“I don’t drink blood. Sorry, guess you’ll have to just watch me die.”
“You’re stubborn, I’ll give you that.”
He left the room without further word and I sat up, grabbed the wires that were connected to me, and yanked them free with a large whelp of pain. My body felt as if it had been kicked on for about a hundred years and all I could do now was feel the heat in my throat, burning and wanting something to wash the pain away. But I couldn’t drink blood, not now, not ever. Food and water, I can live off of that, but something in me said it wouldn’t do. I would’ve died if I was human last night, would’ve died if these people hadn’t gotten me, even if I was half vamp. Ashes said for me not to die but I could see the crowd wasn’t listening to her; they were in it for the blood.
“Damn neck…damn Ashes.”
I popped my neck a couple of times and jumped up off the bed, feeling dizzy, and then walked out of the room in my bloody clothes. The first thing I noticed was this place was a storage house, but it was decorated to look like a home. There were a few humans here and there; working, when they looked up at me, I could do nothing but keep my head high and walk on. This felt weird, wrong, like I didn’t belong around my own race. Well half of me. But still it counts to be remotely human.
“Um, excuse me, where is Tom?”
One of the workers, a woman, looked up at me with her cigarette still placed between her lips.
“Get the fuck away from me.”
She looked right back down on what she was working with, I noticed some kind of chemicals, and looked once more around. They were all working on chemicals, mixing and testing them, it was a strange sight to see in my case. I backed away from the elder woman and walked down the rows, smelling blood, both from humans and vampires. Without thinking I went up to a man this time and reached for one of the bottles a little in my reach, as soon as I did he withdrew a stake and slammed it hard down between my hand and the bottle, nearly missing my fingers.
“What the hell?”
“Don’t touch anything, vamp.”
Before I could make a rude comment back, a hand gently placed itself on my shoulder and I flung around making a growl, and came to an abrupt stop. There, smiling at me with hope in her eyes was Laurin. She hugged me tightly as I hugged her back, thinking how this all happened, then smiled as we both looked at each other once again.
“You came back for me?”
“I couldn’t just let you run around the streets, now could I?”
“I suppose not, what’s going on, Laurin?”
“All in time, all in good time.”
I smiled as I picked up another bottle, this time the liquid was clear, and studied it for a moment while sniffing around the edges. It was hydroxide, no wonder they were being careful, stuff could make something explode if dealing with the wrong thing…well I think so anyways. Then again I was never good at science even though it was my favorite subject. As Laurin came around the corner, coming into full view, she just stared at me for the longest while. After about a minute or so I brought my attention back to her.
“What?”
“You really don’t know do you? They never said anything?”
“Not really. All a bunch of lame vamps hanging around wanting what they can’t have.”
“Well do you even know what they want?”
“No, and I don’t give a shit.”
“They want you, Blood.”
“Ashes does but no one else. They’d rather have me killed.”
“Wow I can’t imagine why Ashes wouldn’t have told you. See, Blood, when you drank from Ashes…her blood has ancestry in it.”
“Old news.”
“How about this…her ancestry is the only one that can actually make half breeds.”
“Cool. Wait that doesn’t make sense, if her ancestry is the only one that made half breeds then how did I come into this picture?”
“You were a rare, very rare, exception. Your father drank Ashes blood right before he…made love to your mother. Therefore the small amount of Ashes’ genes combined into yours.”
“Ew.”
“That’s not all, see when you drank Ashes blood as well; you actually gained more blood than imagined. You were born with her ancestral blood, now you have fed on it. Only means you are part of that ancestral pattern.”
“So…?”
“It all means that you are a half breed that can actually produce more half breeds. You’re the cure to both human and vampire inabilities. Ashes has wanted to get her hands on you because of it, humans want to get their hands on you, hell everyone does.”
“But these humans here don’t, those vamps they tried to kill me. Doesn’t make sense does it?”
“Some humans want to stay regular, few, but what about last night? No they weren’t going to kill you; see the only way to turn is to…”
“Feed. They jumped on me to feed. They want to be half blood.”
“Exactly. Now, how have you been?”
“Dead.”
Laurin laughed and she draped an arm around my shoulder as we walked up the stairs, considering it was about a three story building, and we came to a stop as Tom, Jeremy, and others who looked like in charge were standing in front of me. One of the women came up and I nearly fell to my knees at the surprise.
“Stand, niece, it is I, your aunt Lora.”
“Aunt Lora, you are the leader.”
Even though it was a statement, she nodded and proceeded over to a table as she relaxed.
“It’s so nice of you to have joined us, Blood, we understand now that you are aware of what you really are?”
“Last person on earth who can make hybrids, I’m aware now.”
“Good, might I ask whatever happened to the other half breeds?”
“They escaped, when I did, we all went separate ways.”
“Good, even with half breeds on Ashes side, it would’ve equaled out.”
“Then it’s in our favor they are out in the world, not in her hands?”
“Very. Tell me one more thing, Blood, what became of Triscon?”
“I don’t know.”
“Don’t lie, Blood.”
“He left with another fellow vampire I trusted, Lenoir, to a safety camp somewhere.”
“I see, is that what they told you?”
“Yes.”
“You must be wanting to see him now, am I correct?”
“You have him here! Where?!”
My face was so excited but then behind Lora, as she pulled the string, the curtains came open and there hanging from ropes, trying to break free, was Triscon and Lenoir. Along with a few others. And each one of them had a small seal on their armor, Ashes’ seal. They had been spies…no.
