A remote African village story

THE LAST JOURNEY

(A remote African village story)

Mantuala Catima got up very early that morning to prepare for the journey to town. Every month, for the last twenty-five years, he had been making that journey, taking fresh milk to town. He was one of the most successful cattle breeders in that remote African area and he was the only one in his village, and indeed in all the surrounding villages, that had enough milk cows to enable him to deliver one thousand litters of fresh milk to the nearest town, every month. The money he was getting from his milk, he would spend some of it on paying school-fees for his only son who was now twenty-three, some he would give his wife for buying food and other necessities for the home and the rest he would trade for gold.

The aim of the trip he was preparing to make now was somewhat different from that of other trips he had made before. In fact, this time he would not be carrying milk to the city, but gold. Yes, he would carry to town all the gold he had been saving for the last twenty-five years to trade it there for a beautiful house for his son who was thinking of getting married to a beautiful girl from the village. And he didn’t want him to settle in the village after getting married. He wanted to see him and his young wife living in town, where they could find jobs, schools and all kinds
