During the V.O., Teen Tori and Young Vic Rothchild, are struggling to get the row boat to shore and not fall over. They are laughing, enjoying each other’s company.

TORI
(Adult Tori: V.O.)
What can I say about my father? He’s a Broadway star . . . I’m sorry, he was a Broadway star. Sometimes it’s hard to believe he’s gone . . .It feels like he’s still here, you know . . . I can just go over to Times Square and see his name up there, on one marquis or another . . . go to the stage door . . . Oh, there was a long time we didn’t talk . . .in fact, years . . .he tried, it was me, really . . .he certainly always was a good father.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK – AFTERNOON – 1977

We look up from the Great Lawn. Far up, through the balcony of Belveldere Castle we see father and daughter . . . practicing waltzing. It’s a lesson, as Teen Tori giggles when Young Vic Rothchild pretends she has crushed his toes or laughs at her getting dizzy as he dips her.

The music to Shall We Dance by Rogers and Hammerstein begins quietly and goes to full swell, when Teen Tori and Young Vic Rothchild finally get the dance correctly.

TORI [Actress: Natalie Portman]
(Adult Tori: V.O.)

INT. MARIOTT MARQUIS THEATER – SAME TIME

Marriott Marquis Theatre. New York City.

VICTOR ROTHCHILD, [Actor: Tim Curry], 59, a handsome British gentleman is on the stage. Victor wears a Shakespearean shirt and blue jeans with sneakers.

CREW PEOPLE make final preparations putting final touches, around the cast, and setting lights.

CHERYL HART, [Actress: Carey Mulligan] 20s, a beautiful young British actress wears a dance leotard, tights and jazz shoes.

It's a rehearsal, on the stage. Cheryl and Victor rehearse, oblivious to the activity around them.

CHERYL
(dialogue from play)
My good Lord, I have not given him.

Victor is sweating profusely.

CHERYL
(regular conversation)
You don't look well, Vic. Are you all right?

VICTOR
No, I'm...I'm quite well. Really. Working too hard lately, that's all.

CHERYL
We should call it a day, then. There's still two weeks until we open. Jason! Come down!

VICTOR
Stay aloft, Jason. I can finish...let's just...

CHERYL
No way! We're taking a break, at the very least. Vic, you're pale.

Cheryl leads Victor to the edge of the stage to sit down. JASON, the director, [Actor: Mark Salling] 20s-30s, walks on stage.

JASON
What the hell are you doing, Cheryl? It's my rehearsal and I'll call the breaks.

CHERYL
You are such an asshole! Can't you fucking see Victor is sick?

VICTOR
No, I'm fine. A little head rush. Nothing serious.

JASON
Too much partying last night, huh?

CHERYL
What is with you? Do you have to be a jerk all the time?

JASON
A glass of water, Victor?

VICTOR
Yes, it will help.

Jason starts to exit after patting Victor on the shoulder.

JASON
Hang in there!
(to Cheryl)
I'll deal with you later!

CHERYL
Oh God, I'm shaking!

JASON
(OS)
Take ten...then we're running, no stops!

CHERYL
Sorry, Vic...

VICTOR
He's just doing his job, Cheryl.

CHERYL
(out to Jason)
He could do it better!

JASON
(OS)
I heard that!

Jason comes back in with a bottle of water.

CHERYL
Stage Manager quit now, too?

JASON
Don't push it, Cheryl.
(crouching near Victor)
I'm worried, Vic...we go up in two weeks. Do you need a doctor?

VICTOR
I'll be chipper as ever by Monday, really. I just overwork myself.

JASON
Fine.
(stands and addresses all)
Rehearsal is done for today!

CHERYL
(sarcastic)
Wish I thought of that. Jason!

VICTOR
I can finish the scene! Let's finish the scene and I'll go home and rest.

JASON
Are you sure, Victor?
(beat)
Just this scene?

Victor nods and gets on his feet, Cheryl quickly at his side and helping. Cheryl is saying no with her head and glaring at Jason.

CHERYL
(to Victor)
You don't have to do this today, you know.

VICTOR
I'd really like to try.

CHERYL
You just look...gray. I want to call a doctor.

VICTOR
You worry enough for both of us, little lady.

They embrace. Cheryl walks to her spot and Victor takes a deep breath with effort. He collapses to his knees with his hand across his ribs.

Cheryl runs to him.

CHERYL
Oh God! Call a fucking ambulance!

JASON
I'm on it!

CHERYL
Vic? Victor?! Come one, do you hear me?

Victor is unconscious. Cheryl sits on the stage, cradling Victor on her lap. Jason enters and kneels behind them.

JASON
I've sent everyone home. Are you ready for the press, Cheryl?

CHERYL
Do you think they've already gathered?

JASON
He’s a legend . . . when an ambulance arrives at this theatre.

CHERYL
Victor wanted to keep his illness quiet until the end.

JASON
Maybe this is the end?

CHERYL
Jason, you're optimistic nature is just so damned inspiring.

Tori rushes past, she waves at the GUARD, and goes toward the sound stage.

INT. SOUND (NEWS ROOM)

RACHEL SYLVER, [Actress: Jane Lynch] in her 40s, the Producer/Director, wrapped into a handsome woman, is fit to be tied.

RACHEL
(to Tori)
It’s about time!
(to both)
We are on in 5...4...3...

MICHAEL
Good afternoon, I'm Michael Feldon.

TORI
And I'm Tori Roth, your Broadway Baby!

MICHAEL
Welcome to the NBC Noontime Report.

TORI
It's August 8, 1988. I’m coming to you with today’s breaking and entertainment news!

MICHAEL
We will come back with today’s headlines! We'll see you in five minutes!

Rachel has them hold a few seconds and gives them the cue for "off-air".

RACHEL
Cut! Five minutes!

Tori puts her head in her hands.

TORI
Argh!

MICHAEL
Rough day?

Tori gives him a threatening look.

RACHEL
It's noon, Tori. Leave your morning at home!

TORI
Won't happen again, Rachel.

RACHEL
Hmm, Michael, tell me...how many times has she said this in the last...four years?!

MICHAEL
I am not here! Color me invisible.

RACHEL
250.

TORI
Only?

MICHAEL
I'll alert the press!
(beat)
I'm invisible again.

RACHEL
Leave the jokes to those who can, Michael.

MICHAEL
Ew, low blow!

RACHEL
We're back in two . . .

They prepare for air.

EXT. MARQUIS THEATER

An ambulance and emergency vehicles block the corner of 46th Street. ONLOOKERS make the street virtually impassable. Victor is carried out on a stretcher, the crowd reacts as he is a popular Broadway star. There’s an entourage in tow with various EMT WORKERS, Cheryl and Jason around him.

VICTOR
Did you call David?

CHERYL
Don’t worry, Victor. I had Jason call, David will meet you at the hospital, I’m sure.

NEWS CREW PEOPLE are pushing through the crowd, shooting with still and video cameras and shoving in microphones.

NEWSWOMAN #1
Miss Hart, what happened?

CHERYL
No questions!

NEWSMAN #1
Miss Hart, what about the rumor about Victor Rothchild being a homosexual?

CHERYL
What kind of bloody question is that?!

NEWSMAN #2
We want to know if this is AIDS related.

JASON
There will be a press release in a couple of hours. Now, get out of the way!

NEWSWOMAN #2
Miss Hart, what did Mr. Rothchild ask you a minute ago?

CHERYL
Oh, you can quote me on this!
(beat)
None of your damned business!

Victor is loaded into the ambulance, Cheryl enters right behind him.

INT. NEWSCAST

Rachel holds up two fingers, then one and points at Michael.

RACHEL
We're on in 5..4...3...

Rachel hands Tori a paper from the side.

TORI
Breaking news from Broadway. The legendary Victor Rothchild....

Tori lets out a little gasp as she reads ahead.

TORI
I'm sorry.
(she clears her throat)
Victor Rothchild, known for his roles on Broadway and London's West End, has collapsed ...

Tori is having trouble and visibly shaken up reading this.

TORI
...at the Marriott Marquis Theatre…early reports in are announcing it’s a massive heart attack.

Michael is watching Tori carefully. Rachel motions to Michael to take the copy and continue.
Tori collects herself continues.

TORI
Mr. Rothchild's condition is listed as critical.

MICHAEL
It certainly is terrible news, Tori.
(beat)
Tori Roth and I, Michael Feldon, will be back after a word from our sponsors.

Rachel gives the out cue.

TORI
I'm really sorry, Rachel.

MICHAEL
(gently)
You're a fan of Victor Rothchild, I assume?

TORI
No, I'm quite the opposite.

RACHEL
Tori, you are unusually upset.

MICHAEL
You would think he was your father, or something.

Tori's eyes open wide and she bursts into tears.

TORI
Oh God!

She runs off stage. Michael and Rachel look at one another, puzzled.

RACHEL
Michael, finish the newscast.
(going OS to aid Tori)
Tori, stop!

MICHAEL
I'll call Stephen after the newscast. He can come get Tori and take her home.

INT. LAW OFFICES

STEPHEN OSBORNE, [Actor: Matthew Morrison] as the nameplate on the desk reads, followed with "Attorney At Law". Stephen is a handsome man of 33. He is relaxed back in his chair, tie undone; watching the newscast on a portable TV.

The TV is perched at the end of his cluttered desk, full of forms and files. Beside this is a photograph of Tori, Stephen and CRYSTAL [Actress: Bailee Madison] (age 5).

STEPHEN
Damnit!

Stephen uses the intercom.

STEPHEN
Deb, call the station . . . It's Tori . . . No, I mean, her father . . . heart attack . . . Yeah . . . Call St. Vincent’s, see if they'll give you any information . . . buzz me back.

Steve fixes his tie. He grabs his briefcase and takes his suit jacket from the back of the chair. The BUZZER goes off.

STEPHEN
Yes, Deb? . . . What'd you find out? . . .
(presses another line)
Hi, Honey! . . . Are you all right? . . . You don't sound like you are . . . I'll come there . . . We can just pick Crystal up from pre-school early . . . I am coming over! . . . Yeah. Bye!

INT. TORI’S OFFICE

Tori's office at the news station, she sitting at the large wood desk; it is full of papers, no visible space. Rachel sits across from Tori, holding her hands.

RACHEL
Darling, all this . . . what is it?

TORI
Victor Rothchild is my father, you know . . .

RACHEL
Of course! Tori Roth is your stage name. When I met you . . . Rothchild. You need to go to him, then.

TORI
I . . . I can't.

RACHEL
Darling, you have too, he needs you now.

TORI
You don't understand--we're estranged. We haven't spoken in years.

RACHEL
Can I ask why?

TORI
I'm not really ready to talk about it, Rachel.

RACHEL
My opinion: You should.

TORI
It's much too long a story.

RACHEL
First, you know, I'm your friend. Second, you should know, your mood greatly affects my newscast!

TORI
(jokingly)
Aw, so, making me talk is purely to save your newscast?

RACHEL
Really, Tori . . . I care about you . . . and want you to be at peace.

TORI
Me, too.

RACHEL
Why so much bitterness for your father?

TORI
I just wish he could've...I don't know . . . been different.

RACHEL
What do you mean…something besides an actor?

TORI
Oh, no, not that. He should've stay married to my mother.

RACHEL
It's never easy being a child of divorce, Tori. What is it, really?

TORI
He's gay, Rachel.

Rachel is visibly shocked.

TORI
Divorce, all right . . . homosexuality, another story.

RACHEL
Sorry, sweety.

TORI
It made their whole marriage a lie . . .a hoax . . . pretend.

RACHEL
Is this what he said? Your mother said?

TORI
Maybe. He could have told me something else. Anything else!

RACHEL
Then he would be a liar. Did you want a lie?

TORI
I don't know, Rach. Violet and I were still in school, and somehow the rumors got around; Violet and I were suddenly outcasts.

RACHEL
Children can be cruel . . .

TORI
I had a boyfriend and . . .

Tori cannot continue.

RACHEL
Teasing is normal, Tori. You honestly blame your father because you were teased at school?

TORI
You don't understand . . . it wasn't the teasing.

Rachel is confused.

TORI
It’s what happened because of . . . him.
(trying to keep composure)
I can't talk about this . . . not now.

RACHEL
When you're ready, you know my number. Anytime.

TORI
Thank you.

A knock on the door and Steve peeks in.

RACHEL
Hello there, Steve! Come in . . . I was just going.

STEPHEN
(inaudible: to Rachel)
How is she?

RACHEL
(inaudible: to Steve)
Not so good.

STEPHEN
(out loud)
See you later, Rachel!

Rachel exits. Steve greets Tori with a kiss. She is stiff and stoic.

STEPHEN
How ya' holding up, dear?

TORI
I'm fine.

The phone rings.

TORI
Yes?...All right, put it through.
(to Stephen)
It's Violet.
(into phone)
Yes, Vi...Of course!...No, Violet, I won't!...He has you, it should be enough...Mom and I haven't talked to him in fourteen years...he is capable of dealing with it now...I have to go, now...No, again, I won't be at the hospital...Go, then!...I'm hanging up now; Steve is here...Bye!

She slams the phone down a bit hard.

STEPHEN
She wants you to see him, huh?

TORI
(sarcastic)
How psychic of you!

STEPHEN
He is your father, honey.

TORI
You sound like Violet!

STEPHEN
He is in critical condition, you know.

TORI
I don't care, Steve.

STEPHEN
I know that's not true.

TORI
I'm confused, okay?

STEPHEN
What do you really want to do?

TORI
What am I supposed to do? I'm trying to figure out the right thing.

STEPHEN
There are no rules Tori. It just seems, to me, you would want to see him.

TORI
Please, Steve.

STEPHEN
Talk to Violet, perhaps?

Tori shoots him a dirty look.

STEPHEN
You are family.

TORI
I can handle it, Steve. I’m an adult, you know!

STEPHEN
(lightening up)
I noticed, and not too shabby for a married woman, either.

Stephen goes in for a playful hug. Tori slaps away his hands.

TORI
Really bad timing, Steve!

STEPHEN
I know.
(more serious)
As your husband all I ask is you keep talking this out . . . to me or someone.

TORI
I'd rather not think about it, or talk about it, for that matter. Do you mind?

STEPHEN
You're not alone, Tor. You have somewhere to turn.

TORI
God, I know, Steve. I know.

They embrace.

INT. ST VINCENTS HOSPITAL – TWO HOURS LATER.

DAVID WASHBURN, [Actor: Steve Martin] 50s – 60s, Victor's longtime lover, is standing beside Victor's bed. Victor is sitting up in the bed, various tubes coming from his body. A heart monitor beeps in an even rhythm.

Flowers decorate the private room in various places. Victor is flipping channels with the remote control.

VICTOR
(sarcastic)
Look at this, luv...and cable, too!

DAVID
Vic, you're funny. You need rest, though.

VICTOR
I'd much rather be home with you, dear.

DAVID
It's only overnight, we will make it through one night.

VICTOR
They're boring the bloody hell out of me!

DAVID
You'll be back to rehearsal in a week. You're still in the show.

VICTOR
(more serious)
I don't know, luv. I may not be able to finish any more shows.

DAVID
Jason and Cheryl really want you back -- so do your fans.
(gently)
I admit, though, on a purely selfish level; I'd like you home with me.

NURSE RANDALL, a bookish, friendly woman in her [Actress: Melanie Lynskey] 30s-50s, enters with a bag of mail.

NURSE RANDALL
How's my favorite star?

DAVID
Aw, more fan mail for His Majesty!

NURSE RANDALL
Arriving like clockwork! Mr. Rothchild is the most popular patient at St. Vinny's; we've hired forty temps to field the phone calls!

VICTOR
You are exaggerating, my lady.

NURSE RANDALL
Oh, you keep calling me your lady with that voice...you may earn some special privileges!
(to David)
I just adore British accents!

DAVID
(winking)
So do I!

VICTOR
Yes, Nurse Randall and I are having a wild affair, sweetheart.

NURSE RANDALL
You must call me, Sandra, Mr. Rothchild.

VICTOR
And you must call me Victor . . . my darling.

Victor kisses her hand. She swoons.

NURSE RANDALL
You’re embarrassing me, Mr. Roth...Victor!

VICTOR
David, this vision of loveliness gave me two private sponge baths today! I've only been here two hours!

NURSE RANDALL
You are my favorite patient; and such a flirt!

DAVID
Don't I know it!

NURSE RANDALL
I'll leave these cards here, all right?

She places the mail bag slightly under a bedside chair.

VICTOR
Farewell, my lady fair!
(to David)
She spoils me rotten.

DAVID
That’s all I need. Thank you, Nurse Randall!

NURSE RANDALL
My pleasure! You're so silly...both of you!
(as she exits)
So long, handsome!

Nurse Randall giggles as she walks off-stage.

David reaches for a backpack nearby and takes out a walkman and a cassette tape.

DAVID
I brought the new tape by Louise L. Hay.

VICTOR
(reading it)
A Positive Approach to AIDS.

Victor looks sadly at the tape and walkman. He sits them on his stomach and takes David's hand.

VICTOR
I'm not sure I can, right now.

DAVID
It won't hurt to keep listening to them. Hold out hope. I need you...

VICTOR
I need a favor.
(patting bed)
Sit down, sweetheart.

DAVID
(sitting)
Anything you want, Vic. You name it.

VICTOR
Well, this one could be difficult.

DAVID
What do you mean?

VICTOR
I want to see Victoria.

DAVID
Then, I have only one word for you: futile.

VICTOR
I need to see her.

DAVID
Why would she come now, Vic? Violet is the dutiful daughter. Victoria, well, she is your prodigal one.

VICTOR
The prodigal son came back. Of course, my princess will come now.

DAVID
I don't want you to worry, or focus your energy unnecessarily.

VICTOR
We both know, this is probably my last chance.

David hangs his head, distraught.

DAVID
(blinking back tears)
I believe, I choose to believe, you're wrong. You cannot leave me. Not yet, Victor. Listen to the tapes. You have to believe it, too.
(picking up the walkman)
For me? Please?

VICTOR
Love, my true love--please, don't make me say it.

DAVID
You are all I want, Vic.
(standing)
All I have, in this world!

VICTOR
David, don't. Don't do this.

Victor holds out his hand to David. With hesitation, David gives in and takes hold of Victor's hand and lays his head on Victor's chest. Crying.

VICTOR
You are the most wonderful; the most perfect man for me, David. It's time, though. You have to let me go.

DAVID
No, you're still here. I'll never let you go.

David sits up, contains himself and looks Victor in the eyes.

DAVID
(firmly)
I'm not about to let you die before you actually...die!

VICTOR
(smiling a bit)
All right. But, David, I need Victoria, too. I need her to remember me...

David shoots him a look.

VICTOR
I want to hold my grandchild. She won't be a baby forever, she's nearly six now.

DAVID
I can try, Vic.

VICTOR
You can understand, can't you? Won't you?

DAVID
I do. I am afraid I'll disappoint you, if I cannot convince her.

VICTOR
You can't disappoint me, luv.

DAVID
What about Violet? Would she talk to Tori...ask her to come?

VICTOR
Sibling rivalry.

DAVID
I'll do my best. I love you and I want you to be happy.

VICTOR
You make me happy. Victoria would make me overjoyed!

DAVID
I'd better go...before your Commander-In-Chief returns and boots me out!

VICTOR
I really love you!

They kiss.

DAVID
I love you, too.

David blows Victor a kiss, from the door. Victor catches it and puts it on his lips.

INT. TORI’S OFFICE – TWO DAYS LATER

Tori is in her office at her desk. An ASSISTANT [Actress: Angela Theresa Collins] drops off some papers. The intercom BUZZES, Tori speaks on speaker phone, hands free.

TORI
Yes, Barb?
(shocked, angry)
She's here...in person?!
(panic)
Tell her I'm not...

VIOLET ROTHCHILD, [Actress: Anna Kendrick] 27, with similar looks as Tori enters. She has an angry scowl on her face.

VIOLET
We gotta talk, Sis.

TORI
(sarcastic)
Hello...Sis! So nice of you to stop in…unannounced.

VIOLET
I've been at the hospital…in case, you haven't heard.

TORI
I gathered as much. You look terrible.

VIOLET
I don't want to be here. And you definitely know why I am here.

TORI
Let's put together the facts, shall we? I know you didn't come here to tell me you've won the lotto. So, could it be...help me out, Violet.
(moving behind Vi)
I know! To make me feel guilty, perhaps? Is that it?

VIOLET
(meeting her gaze)
If you think that, you must have a guilty conscience. I am surprised, nevertheless, that you have a conscience.

Violet breaks the attitude a bit. She fiddles with a paperweight on the desk.

VIOLET
What's with you, anyway?

TORI
(still angry)
Nothing much. I have to do a newscast, oh, in about two minutes. So?

VIOLET
Nice try. You have half an hour. I checked first.

TORI
Good. Give me a minute to say goodbye and twenty-nine to go over my copy.
(moving to the door)
Leaving me, exactly...NO TIME, to discuss…uh, Victor, and your unwelcome . . . uncalled for visit, today.

VIOLET
Hear me out, Tori. You can give me that much.

TORI
There's nothing you can tell me that I haven't heard a million times already. So, forget it.

VIOLET
Why are being like this? So, bitchy!

TORI
Violet, I mean it. Get out!

VIOLET
Oh, so you think you're the only one suffering, right?! He is my father, too!

TORI
(stoic)
Nice to see you, Violet.
(holding door open)
Give Daddy my best. See you later.

VIOLET
Oh my god! Look at you, Tori! You have everything going for you. Yes, everything! And you cannot even see your own father in his time of need.

TORI
I have everything?! What do I have, Vi? A homosexual father who abandoned his wife and kids after fifteen years?! Where the hell was he in our time of need? Tell me that!

VIOLET
He left our mother, not us. Besides, it was your choice to not see him.

TORI
He hurt me, Violet. His...his...the divorce ruined my life, okay?

VIOLET
Tori, he hurt me, too.

TORI
Well, I'm sorry. But, he hurt me more.

VIOLET
Really? You're hilarious, Tori. You always have to one-up me, huh? Brilliant.

TORI
Why are you still here?

VIOLET
Oh yeah, I forgot. I know how to forgive. You don't. Come on, Sis. He was a good...no, I take that back. He is a good father, Victoria.

TORI
Don't call me Victoria. I don't like it.

VIOLET
Because of Daddy? Tori, really, can you honestly say he treated us bad? Ever?

TORI
No. No, but . . .

VIOLET
But, what?

TORI
Things happened, Vi...very terrible things.

VIOLET
What terrible things?

TORI
You don't remember what it was like…at school…after the divorce?

VIOLET
Sort of. It wasn't good or fantastic. No.

TORI
What did everyone call us?

VIOLET
Lesbians…mostly.
TORI
Why, Violet?

VIOLET
I guess it was pretty known that Daddy was gay.

TORI
Yeah, you told them.

VIOLET
Did I? I was a kid, Tor...it doesn't matter.

TORI
No, I guess not.

VIOLET
So, what is your point? It was hard to be called names; sure, but it didn't make me hate Daddy.

TORI
Something worse...happened, though...to me.

VIOLET
What, Tor? My god, what happened, Sis. You can tell me.

Tori walks away from Violet, composes herself.

VIOLET
Whatever. Just see him…one time. Please?

TORI
It's been too long...

VIOLET
Are you afraid of Daddy?

TORI
No, I'm not afraid.

VIOLET
You're shaking, Tori.

TORI
I am not! I'm just getting angry, that's all.

VIOLET
Great! Then, go head, get angry! Maybe someone will mistake you for a human being!

TORI
He's in stable condition, isn't he?

VIOLET
For now…yeah.

TORI
If something changes, then...

VIOLET
He wants to see you. Doesn't that mean anything to you? Do you feel anything?

TORI
Victor will get over it. Anyway, he has what's his name!

VIOLET
David? Yeah, his lover . . .a wonderful guy, Tori. You'd like him.

TORI
I have no time for you jabs, Vi.

VIOLET
Well, Daddy doesn't have much time, either; I told him you were heartless, that you'd never care.

TORI
Oh please, Vi. As usual, you're being the drama queen.

VIOLET
The man is dying. What part of that don't you get?

TORI
He's in stable condition...that's good!

VIOLET
You don't give a damn. I give up!

TORI
I didn't want Victor to...anything. A heart attack is bad, I know; I didn't wish that on him. I don't hate anyone that much.

VIOLET
Hate? You hate him, now? And Victor?

Nothing has changed! I've been by his side every day, for years...the dedicated daughter. And I love him, Tori, so much!
(almost laughing)
Still, he wants you, just you...his Princess Victoria.

TORI
Stop it, Violet! You cannot blame this on me.

VIOLET
I will never be good enough…to him, at least. I'd give anything to have even half the love he gives you. You don't even want it, do you?
(resolved)
You know what he asks me, every time I see him?

TORI
Of course not.

VIOLET
He says, "How is my Princess Victoria?" or "Turn on the TV, Violet, your sister is on."

VIOLET
(sad)
I love him, Tori and I should hate him, too. He adores you, from afar, and you hate his guts.
(re-igniting anger)
And you have the nerve to tell me he hurt you more! Wow!

Violet heads toward the door.

TORI
Violet, I am sorry you allowed him to do that to you.

VIOLET
(at the door)
No you're not.

TORI
I don't hate him, either. I am just...

VIOLET
He loves you, Tor. His love is unconditional, as it should be. No matter how you've acted.
(one more try)
Won't you give him a moment of your time for that?

TORI
I don't know if I can.

VIOLET
Okay. But please, soon. It has to be soon.

TORI
You scare me sometimes, Violet. It sounds like he's already dead.

Violet realizes Tori doesn't know.

VIOLET
You do know, don't you? You have to know...

TORI
Know what...

VIOLET
My God, Victoria. I don't know how to tell you. I don't know how to say this.

TORI
Just say it, Vi. You say everything else...

VIOLET
Daddy...he's dying.

Tori is shaken, she can see Violet is serious. Tori leans over her desk to keep from falling.

VIOLET
For God's sake, Tori, sit down.

Violet closes the door and helps Tori sit. Violet pulls a chair right beside her and holds her hands.

TORI
His heart . . . is it his heart?

VIOLET
No...Tori. Daddy has AIDS.

TORI
That can't be true.

VIOLET
God, I'm sorry, sis. He's had it for years...I really thought you knew.

TORI
Tell me you're lying, Violet.

VIOLET
No. I'm so sorry. I wish it, too. He just wants to see you before...

TORI
Leave now, Vi. Please, just leave.

VIOLET
Tori, you look pale. I want you to talk to me.

Tori pushes her away and stands in front of her. Violet jumps to her feet, too. She's intimidated by Tori's anger this time.

VIOLET
I can't leave you like this.

Tori goes past her to the door.

TORI
Fine. You stay. I'll leave!

Tori storms out.

VIOLET
Come back, Tori; you're on the air in a few minutes.
(calling after her)
You can't just go like this. Where are you going?! Tori! Tori! Where can we reach you?

Violet goes to Tori's desk and picks up the phone.

VIOLET
Stephen Osborne, please...make it quick!

EXT. LINCOLN CENTER – LATER THAT EVENING

Vivian Beaumont Theatre area of the Lincoln Center complex. Tori is sitting on a cement bench, with 5-year-old Crystal on her lap.

TORI
That was your Grandpa on the video.

CRYSTAL
He's on the TV, just like you, Mommy!

TORI
Well, my Daddy; your Grandpa is an actor. Mommy is a newscaster.

CRYSTAL
Grandpa is the Pied Piper!

TORI
He was pretending to be the Pied Piper. Actors pretend to be other people.

CRYSTAL
Grandpa can't do magic then?

TORI
No, darling. Only pretend magic.

CRYSTAL
Are you sad, Mommy?

Tori cries. Crystal rubs her cheek.

CRYSTAL
Because Grandpa can't do magic?

TORI
I'm very sad, Crystal, because Grandpa is sick. And there's no magic in the world to make him better.

CRYSTAL
In my book, Beauty and The Beast, the Beast turned into a Prince because Belle loved him.

TORI
Yes, he did, darling.

CRYSTAL
If we both love Grandpa, would he get better, too?

TORI
Oh, how I wish it were that easy . . .

Violet and Stephen approach.

CRYSTAL
Look, Mommy! It's my Daddy and Aunt Vi!

Steve scoops up Crystal.

STEPHEN
How's Daddy's girl?!

CRYSTAL
Mommy and me saw Grandpa on video!

TORI
I wanted her to see Victor.

VIOLET
I thought you didn't care about him?

TORI
Don't start this here!

STEPHEN
Sweety, you could've said you'd be at the library. We were very worried about you two.

TORI
I just needed some time alone with Crystal.

Crystal lets out a big yawn.

STEPHEN
(to Crystal)
Are you all tired out, big girl?

VIOLET
How about I take you home, Crissy? We'll get some hot chocolate and watch some TV!

Crystal goes to her Aunt Vi.

STEPHEN
(to Violet)
Thank you.

Stephen gives some money to Violet.

STEPHEN
Money for a cab.

VIOLET
Thanks Steve. Look sis, I'm sorry I've been such a bully lately. But, think about it a minute; it's not easy for me, either.

Violet with Crystal exits. Crystal and Stephen exchange waving goodbye. Once they are out-of-sight, Stephen sits beside Tori on the bench.

STEPHEN
What happened?

TORI
Daddy has AIDS.

STEPHEN
I heard. Why did you run out before your newscast? It's not like you.

TORI
Oh God, Rachel must be livid! I missed both newscasts, didn't I?

STEPHEN
I explained the situation to Rachel.

TORI
Steve, you should've left that to me!

STEPHEN
Everyone was worried sick, I had to tell her something so she didn't alert the National Guard.

TORI
You think?

Stephen gives Tori that look, the knowing look of whom they are speaking about.

TORI
Yeah, sorry, you're right. Hey, how'd you find me, anyway?

STEPHEN
The librarian is a fan. She recognized you and called the studio.
(beat)
What else?

TORI
I miss him, Steve.

STEPHEN
Then see him.

TORI
How? I haven't spoken to him in 14 years.

STEPHEN
Tori, that's not important now. It's the past. How do I say this?

TORI
Just say it.

STEPHEN
It is your last chance to make peace with him, and your past.

TORI
Don't say it like that. It sounds so awful.

STEPHEN
Your father has AIDS. There is no cure. You have to face facts, Tori.

TORI
It's 1988, science improves all the time, Steve.

STEPHEN
Facts, Tori. The statistics say different. Maybe in 10 years or 20 years, but now: no. Your father won't make it to that day.

TORI
I don't want to discuss this, I really don't. He left us. I can't ... no, I won't see him.

STEPHEN
You're the one who stopped visiting him, Tori. He didn't leave you.

TORI
He took a lover. How can anyone expect me to face this . . . lover . . .this other man.

STEPHEN
You haven't tried. You're strong. You could do it for the love of your father.

TORI
No, Steve, no...It's one thing to know he is a homosexual--but to actually see it?! I'm not strong enough to do that.

STEPHEN
Did you want him to be unhappy? Lying to your mother, you, Violet and to himself . . . for the rest of his life?

TORI
Yeah, I did. Because, you know what? If he had stayed, he wouldn't be dying of AIDS now.

STEPHEN
Darling, he could have contracted AIDS anyway. Staying in the marriage didn't guarantee his fidelity, you know this.

TORI
It's my heart. These last few hours I keep remembering that day . . . the day he told me.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK -- 1977

Horse and buggies line 59th Street near Central Park. Vendors sells their New York wares and tourists ask directions as they come from The Plaza Hotel.

Teen Tori and Young Vic are walking arm in arm on 59th Street.. Teen Tori is giggling as she happily chats with her beloved father.

TEEN TORI
I love New York City, Daddy! This is the best birthday I've ever had!

YOUNG VIC
My Princess Victoria, all grown up and 14-years-old!

They've stopped and Young Vic is looking at his daughter, proudly.

YOUNG VIC
You are a lovely young woman, Princess Victoria.

TEEN TORI
Stop it, Daddy! You're embarrassing me!

YOUNG VIC
What was your favorite part of tonight?

TEEN TORI
Being with you, Daddy, you're my best friend!

YOUNG VIC
And you're mine. Tell me one part that stands out as the best.

Teen Tori spins around in her lovely dress.

TEEN TORI
Hmmm, well, I love, love, love my new dress from Saks!
(takes playbill from her purse)
And the play was so fun . ..

YOUNG VIC
What about dinner?

TEEN TORI
Sardi's was so much fun, too.
(plopping down on bench)
But Daddy, I'm sorry -- I don't like caviar very much.

YOUNG VIC
(laughing)
Neither do I, Princess! It's all right. You enjoyed the steak, though?

TEEN TORI
Yeah, a lot!

EXT. LINCOLN CENTER --1988

We are back to Tori and Stephen, outside the Vivian Beaumont Theatre – on the Lincoln Center compound.
TORI
He wore a tux and we both looked so beautiful! I felt like the most special person in the world that night.

There I was: Out with this Broadway star and he was my Daddy! I felt like the luckiest girl in the universe.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK -- 1977

Now, inside the park, Young Vic lovingly observes his daughter as Teen Tori walks on a bench, like a balance beam. She holds Young Vic's hand (to help her balance). When she reaches the edge of the bench she jumps off.

Young Vic sits down on the bench and motions for Teen Tori to sit, too. She does.

YOUNG VIC
You are my world, Princess Victoria.

Young Vic pushes her hair off her forehead.

TEEN TORI
Daddy, you're being silly.

YOUNG VIC
There's something really important I have to tell you.

TWO YOUNG WOMEN enter and spot Young Vic and squeal or laugh with delight and approach him and Teen Tori, with paper and pen in hands.

WOMAN ONE
(Actress: MacKenzie Phillips)
Oh my God, you're Victor Rothchild! I love you!!! I have seen every show you've ever done.

WOMAN TWO
(Actress: Bernadette Peters)
Can we get your autograph? A date?

The women laugh at their own joke.

WOMAN TWO
I am so embarrassed! An autograph would be fine.

YOUNG VIC
(stands and faces women)
Thank you, I'm honored. Tonight, though, is for Victoria here. She's the star in my life. No autographs tonight, unless it is hers.

WOMAN ONE
Wow, you're such a great person, too!
(to other woman)
See, Wilma. I told you he'd be charming and kind.

YOUNG VIC
Now, ladies, my beautiful daughter and I are celebrating.

WOMAN TWO
We understand! Sorry we interrupted. You're a lucky young lady, Victoria. You have a good evening. Come on, Linda, let's go.

The women exit with goodbyes.

YOUNG VIC
Thank you.

TEEN TORI
Maybe I'll go into acting, Daddy? That was fun!

YOUNG VIC
Well, sweet, sometimes it can be very annoying, as well.

EXT. LINCOLN CENTER --1988

We are back to Tori and Stephen, outside the Vivian Beaumont Theatre – on the Lincoln Center compound.

TORI
It was a perfect night. He was trying to tell me something, I could tell…To top off the night, he took me on a carriage ride through Central Park. I always wanted to take one and since he called me his princess…the carriage ride made me feel like one.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK -- 1977

Inside the park on the bench…where we left them.

YOUNG VIC
(taking Teen Tori's hands)
I'm leaving your mother.

TEEN TORI
(shocked and upset)
No! No Daddy! You can't!

YOUNG VIC
Princess, please, calm down. We're getting divorced.

TEEN TORI
I won't let you! It's not right, Daddy. I'll be better, I won't argue so much. Daddy, please, don't!

YOUNG VIC
Victoria, sweet, you didn't cause this. You didn't. Please, try to understand. Your mother and I, we agreed, it's better this way.

TEEN TORI
It's not better, Daddy. It's awful and terrible. Vi will fall apart and what will everyone say at school?

Teen Tori is getting angry.

TEEN TORI
I want to go home now! You and Mom have to talk about this and explain it to Vi and me.

Young Victor puts his head in his hands and appears to be about to cry. Teen Tori’s anger eases and she goes to her father.

TEEN TORI
Daddy, are you crying?

YOUNG VIC
(pulling himself together)
No, I want to, though. It hurts to see you cry, my Princess.

TEEN TORI
Then, tell me it's not true. Tell me nothing will change and we can stay a family. Please...

YOUNG VIC
There's more, sweet. I don't know if you can understand.

TEEN TORI
I can, Daddy. I'm mature for my age, remember?

YOUNG VIC
(a little laugh)
You are, dear, you really are.
(beat)
Princess, I'm gay.

TEEN TORI
(shock)
Gay.

YOUNG VIC
I've fallen in love with another man. I cannot live a lie, anymore.

TEEN TORI
(pulling away)
No, it doesn't make sense, Daddy. Don't you love Mom?

YOUNG VIC
Yes, Victoria, very much. She knows. I just don't love her...How do I say this? In the way a man should love his wife.

TEEN TORI
What is that supposed to mean?

YOUNG VIC
I love her...as a woman, as the mother of my wonderful children and even as my best friend from college and all these years. It is not in a romantic way, though. I love a man in that way.

TEEN TORI
(tears fall)
Daddy, isn't it true, though? Sometimes gay means happy?

YOUNG VIC
(tears fall)
Yes, Princess Victoria, sometimes it does. I want to be happy and I'm in love with a man whom I want to be with.

They embrace and cry together.

EXT. LINCOLN CENTER --1988

We are back to Tori and Stephen, outside the Vivian Beaumont Theatre – on the Lincoln Center compound.

TORI
(embracing Stephen)
Oh God, Steve, I don't want him to die! I have been angry and wished a lot of things...but not this! Not like this!

STEPHEN
I know, honey, I know. Your father would be happy to see you again. He misses you, too.

TORI
How could he even talk to me? He's never met his only grandchild because of me.

STEPHEN
Well, I don't know what I'd do if Crystal ever left me. I hope I never find out.

But, you know what, Tori; no matter how long my daughter didn't speak to me or visit me, I'd bless the day she came back!

I can't imagine being angry or resentful. I adore her too much. Nothing is stronger than that love, that bond. All other feelings do not even encompass how much we love our child. They say a mother will die for her child, Tori. So will a father.

They hold one another.

TORI
I'm really scared, Steve.

STEPHEN
I'm scared for you, too. (beat) You need to figure out your feelings about your father and his terminal illness, as well.

TORI
(pulling apart from Stephen)
Wait a minute...there's nothing wrong with me, Stephen. I can handle this just fine!

STEPHEN
I can't handle it, Tori! You scared the hell out of me today; running off with Crystal and not even a phone call. Yes, this sort of behavior concerns me a great deal!

TORI
(weakening)
Crystal is fine. Please, Steve, don't leave me now.

STEPHEN
Did I say I was leaving?

TORI
No, I'm sorry. I love you. I love our beautiful daughter and our life together. Don't ever think I don't.

STEPHEN
I love you, too. I don't think it, ever. I do want you to be...complete. You need to resolve this now. Mostly, for you and for Crystal and I. It's important.

INT. ST VINCENTS HOSPITAL – HALLWAY -- TWO DAYS LATER

It’s just outside of Victor’s private room. The door is open. Tori is walking down the hallway, slowly, a long walk…she breathes hard, hyper-ventilating. Hearing voices echoing from inside the room, with the open door…she stops a door away from his room.

David comes out of the open door, looking into the room.

DAVID
(inside doorway)
I'll see you tomorrow, love!

David closes the door and walks toward Tori. Tori is holding a bag and gripping the flowers much too hard. David passes and glances at her. Tori stiffens up – as if trying to disappear into the wall – she doesn’t move.

David takes a couple more steps past her, thinks about it and turns slowly. He knows it’s Tori.

DAVID
You can go in . . .

Tori hasn’t turned to look at him, David behind her. David gently takes her shoulders and turns her toward him.
DAVID
Victoria…he's been waiting a long time.

TORI
How can . . . ? I didn't tell anyone I was coming here.

Frightened. Tori backs away from David. She slouches against the wall.

DAVID
Victor knew you would come.

TORI
I can't do this now. I think I need to sit down…away from here.

DAVID
I can help you to the waiting area.

David offers his arm.

TORI
No, not from you! I can manage by myself.

Tori moves slowly and gets dizzy. David catches her before she falls to the ground and puts an arm around her to support her.

DAVID
I got you.

TORI
All right, I needed a little help. Thank you.

DAVID
You look pale, Victoria…perhaps the cafeteria?

INT. ST VINCENTS HOSPITAL – CAFETERIA – SAME DAY

Tori sits with her purse on her lap, ready to leap at a moment's notice. David has a full lunch and eats it easily.

DAVID
Victoria, you don't . . .

TORI
If you don't mind, Mr. Washburn, I'd prefer you call me Tori.

DAVID
Only if you call me – David. Tori.

TORI
Oh, I brought something for...Victor.
(she sits the bag on table)
It's his favorite…fish and chips. They're probably too cold now.

DAVID
And the flowers you’re embracing like a doll?
(Tori nods)
I'm sure he'd rather you deliver them yourself.

TORI
I was going to; but, I don't think I'm ready for this big of a step.

DAVID
Victor...I mean, Tori. Vic really needs to see you.

TORI
He has you, doesn't he?

DAVID
I know you blame me. I will accept the blame if it will help you. Don't punish Vic, though. He needs to see you.

TORI
Why? What good will it do?

DAVID
A very sick man will feel some joy. Isn't that enough?

TORI
Even if it means I won't feel any joy?

DAVID
You want the truth...Tori?

TORI
Yeah, hit me!

DAVID
You're a spoiled little bitch…and if I had my way you'd never see him again. You asked for truth.
(beat)
Nevertheless, you are his child and seeing you is his only wish. Whether you're happy or not doesn't concern me in the least bit.

TORI
And I don't love him?

DAVID
Well, missy, you have a very strange way of showing it, if you do!

TORI
You have no right to speak to me like this. Who are you, anyway?!

DAVID
The man who loves your father…so, Tori Roth, who are you, really?

TORI
I know who I am, Mr. Washburn. I didn't kill my own...
(beat)
Forget it, it doesn't matter anymore.

DAVID
You think I gave AIDS to Victor?

TORI
Where else did he get it?

DAVID
Here's some shocking information for you, working in the media. Really thought you'd know this.
(beat)
I don't have AIDS, nor am I HIV Positive. Your father was infected by someone else.

TORI
How?

DAVID
Without going into details . . . your father is human. He strayed. He cheated on me and hurt me and himself.

TORI
And you...?

DAVID
The past is the past. I forgave him.
(beat)
I can see the questions in your eyes already. Yes, I can still get AIDS. We didn't know he was infected for a long time.
(more sadly)
I don't regret loving your father all these years, Tori. He's a good man, loving and, well, human. He, too, has flaws. And I know your school girl image of your father is damaged from these truths.

TORI
He damaged it by his actions.

DAVID
Love is risky. It's worth it, though.

TORI
I don't want to hear it. I can't believe you can be so unscathed, calm...

DAVID
It was a long time ago.

TORI
(grabbing food and standing)
Give my father a message, well you? Tell him his daughter said "Rest in peace!"

Tori storms out, David follows and grabs her by the shoulders, turns her around to look at him…harder this time.

DAVID
Wait, Victoria! Please, wait...and listen.

TORI
Let me go! Leave me alone!

DAVID
Listen to me, please! I need five minutes, that's all.

TORI
Five minutes, then...go.

DAVID
I apologize for upsetting you. Nevertheless, I will not apologize for loving your father or being gay. It's what I am and what your father is.
(giving up)
Still, I am not Victor's flesh and blood. He loves you as much as any father can love his child. I think you love him, too.

TORI
Why him?

DAVID
I don't know, Tori...any more than you. Victor is the most giving, wonderful man I've ever known. I want him to live as much as you do.

TORI
You haven't lost fourteen years...

DAVID
No, I haven't. Don't you dare lose another day, missy! Or you will have to deal with me! Capiche?!

This makes Tori smile.

TORI
I'm scared of you, too!
(serious)
How long do I have?

DAVID
You have the rest of his life.

TORI
This is very hard for me to say. Right now, I feel happy he's had you all of these years.

DAVID
Thank you, Tori. And I'm sorry for calling you a spoiled...you know.

TORI
Yeah, I know...I heard you the first time.

DAVID
I get angry, too. It's not easy. Do you want me to go with you?

TORI
No. Thank you, though. I have to do this myself. It's time.

INT. ST. VINCENT’S HOSPITAL – VICTOR’S ROOM

Victor is looking away from the door, toward a window. He's been crying. Tori enters silently. She stands just inside the door. She has the take-out container in her hands, still. The flowers still clutched to her chest.

She stares at Victor, taking him in. Sadness and joy in her eyes. Victor makes no attempt to turn to Tori.

VICTOR
Did I ever tell you about the Princess I once knew?

Tori lets out a little gasp of shock, hearing his voice for the first time in years.

VICTOR
(Shakespeare style)
She was beautiful…the most lovely young lady with a smile that launched a thousand ships. Her eyes shone in the sky like the brightest star in Heaven.
(soliloquy)
And when she laughed...ah, yes, when she laughed; her voice and happiness soothed my aching soul. The touch of her hand, like an comforting angel chased away all my fears.

Tori turns away from Victor, even though, Victor still has not turned to look at her. Tori digs in her purse for tissues and still choking back a sob, dabs her eyes.

VICTOR
One day, my Princess Victoria went away and how...

For the first time in fourteen years, both turn at the same moment and face one another.

TORI
(weakly)
Please...just stop.

VICTOR
...finish the story, my princess.

TORI
I...I can't...I don't know how to play any...more.
(softly)
Daddy…

Victor reaches out his hand to Tori…she is still too far for him to reach. Tori observes his outstretched hand and whispers under her breath.

TORI
(whispering)
I just can’t…

VICTOR
...and how I missed my princess.
(observing Tori)
… and how I cried --until the glorious day; it was like no other day I've ever lived! My Princess Victoria returned to me.

TORI
I'm frightened, Daddy...

VICTOR
Finish the story, you do know how...

TORI
(with difficulty)
Alas, the princess was gone for so many years.
(sadly)
…too many years, she forgot how much she truly loved the King.

Tori goes to Victor, takes his hand…she sits on the bedside chair. Tori puts Victor’s hand on her cheek.

TORI
...the time she lost could not be regained because the King was gravely ill.
(weakly)
I’m so sorry . . . Daddy.

VICTOR
Why did you stop, Princess? Please, go on …

TORI
Daddy...I'm so sorry, what I must've put...

VICTOR
No, you stop that…Princess Victoria.
(firmly)
I taught you better than that…stiff upper lip!

TORI
(laughing thru tears)
Then, why are you crying, too?

VICTOR
Give me a hug before I burst! I'm going to hold you so tight you'll suffocate and never get away again.

They finally hug, tightly and for a long time.

TORI
I'm not ready to lose you, Daddy.

VICTOR
I'm still here, Victoria. You'll never lose me, I am and will always be here for you.

TORI
You must be so angry at me.

VICTOR
Never in a million years.

TORI
Why? I'm angry as hell at myself for...

VICTOR
Don't, Princess, don't. It's over now, in the past. We move forward.

TORI
Fourteen years, Daddy! I can't possibly make up for all those years in a...a...few short months. Is that what I have? Months? Weeks? Days?!

VICTOR
I don't know, luv. I don't know how many months or days I have here. I have AIDS. I know I do. You can say it.

TORI
I feel helpless, and hateful! What kind of person abandons her own father for so long?!

VICTOR
A hurt child, Victoria, that's all. You were hurt.

TORI
You don't know how many times I wanted to call you. I can't even count how many times I did call, just to hear your wonderful voice...Daddy.
(realizing)
...you always knew, didn't you?

VICTOR
Why did you stop calling?

TORI
I don't know--school, Mom, Violet.. and when your...your…when David moved in, I guess.
(shaking it off)
There's so much of my life I wanted to share with you. But as the days turned into months and those into years, it was just too hard to go back…to ask your forgiveness.
(beat)
It was easier to pretend to hate you.

VICTOR
Really?

TORI
No, it hurts, actually. I wanted to run away or scream at you or at me. I want to do that now, run away or scream at the disease killing you.

VICTOR
(humoring)
And make it all better, right?!

TORI
(child-like)
Yeah, that's right!

VICTOR
Ah, my little girl from fourteen years ago!

TORI
You are the only one who can bring it out in me!

Victor and Tori are making friends again. Victor becomes aware of an odor and notices the take-out container.

VICTOR
I don't want to alarm you, Princess; but I think your lunch had died.

TORI
Oh damn! Not my lunch, yours, actually. It was your favorite; but, fish and chips don't hold up as long as I had hoped.

VICTOR
At least, not the American fast food type!

TORI
It can't be any worse than the cuisine of the fine chefs here at Chez St. Vincent’s, right, Daddy?

VICTOR
You could come back again, and bring me something else?

TORI
It's not that simple.

VICTOR
I know this must be difficult for you, Victoria...

TORI
I'm still very confused, Daddy. Part of me does want to spend every waking hour with you--making up for lost time. And another part of me want to back to what I'm accustomed to--staying away.

VICTOR
I won't let you walk away again. I want you back in my life, to stay. You hear me?!

TORI
You still want me? Even when I abandoned you and called you terrible names?

VICTOR
Whatever you are, Victoria, I am too. I was a coward. I could've come to you, I could've found for my visitation rights.

TORI
I wish we could go back. I would protect you.

VICTOR
Oh, luv, we can't. We can have now, though.

INT. TORI’S KITCHEN – ONE MONTH LATER

It’s chaotic in the Osborne household in Weehawken, New Jersey. Violet comes in for ice. Stephen is helping Tori finish plates of foods and dinner.

Crystal sits at the table, singing. She continues to sing her little made up song until Tori yells at her to stop.

CRYSTAL
Grandpa is coming here! I love my Grandpa!

STEPHEN
Tori, you look a little pale.

TORI
(sarcastic)
Gee, thanks, sweety!

STEPHEN
I didn't mean it like that, honey.

TORI
Whatever, Steve…it just has to be perfect, okay?!
(angrily)
Crystal! Stop singing that silly song!!!

Crystal stops immediately, looks up at her mother with big scared eyes and is about to cry.

CRYSTAL
Daddy, what's the matter with Mommy?!

STEPHEN
Nothing, darling. Mommy has just had a rough day. Can you find something quieter to do?

CRYSTAL
Don't be upset, Mommy. I can color!

TORI
Okay, sweetness. I'm not upset at you.

CRYSTAL
Goody!

Crystal runs to her room. Tori goes back to preparing and being frustrated. Stephen watches her…now concerned.

STEPHEN
It's a big day, Tori, I know. But, what is going on with you?

TORI
Daddy’s' going to be here in an hour--the hor d'oeuvres are way behind schedule--and the counters are a mess!

Tori prepares, cuts, etc. hor d'oeuvres, frantically.

STEPHEN
So what, Tori?

TORI
Why are you being mean?

STEPHEN
Mean? I'm not being mean. Victor isn't going to be eating all of this, first of all. At least, not hor d'oeuvres...

TORI
It has to be right, Steve. Perfect! For me! It just has to be!

STEPHEN
It doesn't have to be anything, Tori.

TORI
Fine. I want it to be perfect, then.

STEPHEN
Nothing is perfect.

TORI
What's that mean?

STEPHEN
Sweety, it means just what I said. Nothing is perfect, that's all. Wow, you're really on edge.

TORI
He needs me now, Steve. You have to understand.

STEPHEN
Even if it between your husband or your father?

TORI
You think you will lose, or something?

STEPHEN
No, but, the way you've been lately; you might as well be living God knows where! It certainly has been with Crystal and I.

TORI
Damnit, Steve--we haven't spent a night apart in six years! What are you talking about?

STEPHEN
Well, you're here physically; but, come one--you have to admit your mind and your heart have been elsewhere!

TORI
I cannot do it all!

STEPHEN
No, you're right about that, you can't. I know Victor wouldn't want you to neglect Crystal, at the very least, or me, for him, either.

TORI
You know damn well Daddy doesn't have as much time as we do!

STEPHEN
Tori, I'm a patient man. I will see your through this. Our little girl, though, she won't be five years old again. Please, don't miss that.

TORI
Wow. I've asked David...to...well, uh...to let Victor stay here.

Tori turns away from Stephen.

STEPHEN
Are you afraid to look at me?

TORI
(she looks at him)
No, I'm not. And I'm not asking permission. I decided. I want him here, with us.

STEPHEN
You want him to die here? Is this what you're telling me?

TORI
Daddy doesn't want to die in the hospital. He should be home.

STEPHEN
Yes, Tori…he has a home, with David, his partner. Right?

TORI
I know...I do. David agreed. We have the guest room with the separate entrance--and I already gave David the key. He can be here, with Victor, whenever he wants.

STEPHEN
Does Victor want this, too? He knows this is not his home.

TORI
Daddy wants to be near me, he wants to spend time with his granddaughter.

STEPHEN
It's our home, Tori. It's our daughter, too. You really should have consulted me--you know, your husband, your life partner. Is that asking too much?
(getting closer)
Who do you think I am, Tori?

TORI
He's my father, Steve. I owe him everything I can give him. For the last fourteen years he's wanted one thing from me--a relationship with me.

STEPHEN
He's not your husband, I am. Love, honor, cherish? It's sort of sick—

TORI
Don't you dare, Stephen--don't even think about saying something like that. Don't even insinuate it!

STEPHEN
I'm losing you, Victoria. Yes, you know it's true. Am I going to lose you, too--like your father did. Will you walk away and come back in fourteen years, when I'm dying or something?!

TORI
How dare you!

STEPHEN
No, Tori. How dare YOU! How dare you make me fight to keep my wife. If you were having an affair, maybe...No, wait, you are!

Tori is horrified.

STEPHEN
You spend every evening and weekend with him. Crystal and I have to deal with it. If it's not an affair, I don't know what else to call it.

When do we get you back, Tori? Can you answer me?

TORI
Don't, Stephen! I'm scared. I'm scared one day, you'll leave me, too.

STEPHEN
And you think I'm not?

TORI
Listen. Mom and Dad, they were just like us. They held hands, they were affectionate--high schools sweethearts and in love.
(beat)
One day, that awful day, it was over. He was gay. A homosexual. How does that happen?

STEPHEN
You were a teenager, Tori. It could just your wishful thinking. You could be blocking out the arguing and what have you.

TORI
You don't get it. They were just like us, Steve.

STEPHEN
Come on, Tori. Please, you can't even think that...

TORI
My mother thought the same thing, you know?

STEPHEN
Don't be ridiculous, Tori. I'm not gay. Seriously. Don't even go there. That's crazy talk.

TORI
Is it?

STEPHEN
If it wasn't so funny...

TORI
(welling up)
It's not funny, Stephen.

STEPHEN
(hugging her)
Sweety, no, I guarantee you, it will never happen.

TORI
Divorce happens to a lot of couples.

STEPHEN
I don't want to ever divorce you. If our marriage did end, ever, or you wanted out -- and it would be you wanting out; I'd fight like hell to make you stay.

TORI
I hope so. But...

STEPHEN
No, it would never be because of another man, Tori. No way.

Stephen kisses Tori's forehead and then her on the lips.

TORI
Are you angry about Daddy? You don't want him here?

STEPHEN
He's on his way, right? I don't have the strength nor the heart to turn him away now…at least, not tonight.
(angry)
We do need to discuss it, though; it is not resolved.

Tori nods as she hands a plate of hor d'oeuvres and take another herself.
Violet comes in with a camera.

VIOLET
Come on, you two! David just arrived with Daddy! I want a picture of everyone greeting him!

Violet exits. Stephen and Tori take a deep breath and exit.

INT. REC ROOM – TORI’S PLACE – ONE HOUR LATER

It is a basement/Rec Room, in Tori's house, a couple of hours later. A mini-wet bar is on the east wall, and a billiards table center. A cabinet of trophies are displayed on the north wall.

Stephen and Michael are shooting pool.

MICHAEL
How're holding up, old boy? Your game is way off today!

STEPHEN
Big day.

MICHAEL
Really? I've known you two much too long for that. Something ain't kosher.

STEPHEN
Yeah. You ever...never mind.

MICHAEL
Come on. Did I ever what?

STEPHEN
I know that AIDS can't be caught through casual contact; I mean, my firm has handled AIDS cases.
(uncomfortable)
I'm not prejudice, in any way -- but, in my own home! I just don't like it; I'm . . .

MICHAEL
Are you afraid?

STEPHEN
Maybe. Not so much for me, though. Crystal, mostly. She's so young, and kids play...bruise, bleed...I'd be...I can't even say it!

MICHAEL
I think I know what you're trying to get at. Don't say it, it's alright. Let me ask you this. Is it really the AIDS that's bothering you, or is it the homosexuality?

STEPHEN
Mike, I'm a lawyer, sexual preferences are not my concern, or a problem for me.

MICHAEL
You mean, professionally. I get that. This is your home, as you said. Does it bother you--personally?

STEPHEN
I'm not comfortable around gay men--no. I do find it...uncomfortable that a man may be attracted to me. Sure, wouldn't you?

MICHAEL
It's not about me, Steve. Do you think Victor Rothchild is attracted to you, then?

STEPHEN
No, not at all!
(changing the subject)
I need another beer! You?

Stephen goes to the wet bar and pulls a couple of beers from the mini-fridge. Michael nods and laughs under his breath, setting up his next shot.

MICHAEL
So, tell me, you don't have any gay friends?

STEPHEN
No! I take that back. I really don't discuss it with my friends. Do you?

MICHAEL
Maybe if you did talk about things, you and Tori wouldn't feel so slighted by each other?

STEPHEN
Hey, bud, what's going on with you? Yeah, we've been friends a long time; but, you sound like a woman...or a therapist! It's a little weird.

MICHAEL
Do you watch the newscasts?

STEPHEN
Yeah, so?

MICHAEL
Man, it's not my place, or my style to tell you. Since Tori is being considered for that newsmagazine show of her own...

STEPHEN
Hold on! What newsmagazine show?

MICHAEL
Damn! Tori didn't tell you?

STEPHEN
Goddamnit! She's keeping everything from me!

MICHAEL
There's a lot to deal with, lately.

STEPHEN
What about me, Mike? I love her so much, still I don't know her anymore.

MICHAEL
She loves you, too--she'll come around.

STEPHEN
Tori is, or was, my best friend. I miss her. We used to communicate, tell each other everything.I've never met anyone like her. I know it's hard to believe, but, I used to be so closed; never talked about feelings or even felt them. Then, Tori comes into my life…opened me up to a new world.

MICHAEL
Tori took you out of your shell.

STEPHEN
Yeah, she saw right through it. It's funny how she always seemed to know exactly what I was thinking...feeling.

MICHAEL
She listened.

STEPHEN
Never judging me, I could be myself with her.

MICHAEL
Don't take this wrong, friend. Right now, are you giving her the same love? Accepting her as she is, without judgment?

STEPHEN
Yes, of course!

MICHAEL
Fine! I'm just asking...

INT. VICTOR’S ROOM – LATER THAT EVENING

The guest bedroom, in Tori's home. Victor is in the bed in this nicely decorated room. Violet is trying too hard to dote on Victor.

VIOLET
Daddy, do you want the curtains open?

VICTOR
No, sweetheart, you've done too much already.

VIOLET
It's not trouble. You'll want to see the sun in the morning, right?

VICTOR
Come here, lady Violet.

Violet stops playing with the curtains. At first, she doesn't look at Victor.

VICTOR
Get that chair and sit beside me.

Violet does as she is told. As she sits there, she looks like a punished child.

VIOLET
Yes, Daddy?

VICTOR
I'm not going to punish you.

VIOLET
I know.

VICTOR
Why do you look so...angry.

VIOLET
I'm not.

VICTOR
What happened?

VIOLET
You made your choice, alright?

VICTOR
Oh, Violet darling...Princess.

VIOLET
Victoria is the princess, I though.

VICTOR
You're both my little princesses.

VIOLET
(standing, moving away)
And now you're going to tell me how you love us both the same.

VICTOR
I do.

VIOLET
Then, why her? Why here?

VICTOR
Victoria is not as strong as you. You've always been my little rebel. The strong one.

VIOLET
I don't want to be.

VICTOR
You get that from me. You and I, darling, we can see people for who they are, all the flaws, all the secrets.

VIOLET
It's painful.

VICTOR
Yes, it can be.

VIOLET
How do I stop it? How do I stop feeling other peoples' feelings?

VICTOR
You don't. You just learn to channel it, to help.

VIOLET
Why should I help? No, who will help me?

VICTOR
Helping others always helps you, too. You bring out the strength in others and then you receive it, too. Victoria will need you, need your strength. In turn, she will hold you up, too.

Violet crawls into the bed with Victor.

VIOLET
Remember when we were little? Tori and I would cuddle up next to you and Mom on stormy nights.

VICTOR
Yes, our stormy night picnics!

VIOLET
Daddy, I want you to get better. I want you to try.

VICTOR
I know, sweetheart. Yet, sometimes the storm ends and those who are left must rebuild.

VIOLET
Yes, the survivors. You can help us rebuild.

VICTOR
Yes, I will try.

Violet cuddles like a small child. Victor silently cries.

INT. VICTOR’S ROOM – ONE MONTH LATER/EVENING

There's some fresh flowers and some newspapers and magazines on the table.

Victor is sleeping as Crystal sneaks in. She tiptoes over to Victor and stares into his face a few minutes. Crystal, once satisfied, goes to a table full of medicine bottles. Victor wakes up just as she reaches for a bottle of pills.

VICTOR
Alas, I hear the footsteps of a little princess.

Crystal giggles and runs to Victor.

CRYSTAL
Grandpa talks funny!

VICTOR
It's a game I used to play with your Mum when she was a little princess, just like you.

Victor gives Crystal a tickle.

CRYSTAL
Can I play it, too?

VICTOR
We will make up our own special story, like our storybook. And it is our special story, alright? You can come here every day and we will add more to our story.

Crystal is very excited.

VICTOR
First, I want to tell you about a writer who wrote magical stories! He lived a long time ago in England.

CRYSTAL
Like you, Grandpa?

VICTOR
Oh, a long, long, long time ago, even before my grandpa.

CRYSTAL
What was his name?

VICTOR
William Shakespeare.

CRYSTAL
That's a big name!

VICTOR
Well, we can call him Willy.

CRYSTAL
(giggling)
Willy is a funny name!

VICTOR
It is, isn't it?! And this guy, Willy, he talked sort of funny, too.

CRYSTAL
Like you talk sometimes?

VICTOR
Yes, like I talk sometimes.

CRYSTAL
Tell me a special story, Grandpa. Please?

VICTOR
My lady, anything for you!

CRYSTAL
(proud)
I am a lady!

VICTOR
You are the finest young lady!

Victor has the bed in a sitting position. Crystal sits on his lap. Crystal cuddles up to her Grandpa, ready to hear the story.

VICTOR
Once upon a time...

CRYSTAL
(sleepy)
My favorite kind of story, Grandpa.

VICTOR
...in the kingdom a glorious and beautiful little princess lived. The sound of her laughter was pure with love, and her lilt of pure crystal. Alas, she was known, far and wide, as Princess Crystal.

CRYSTAL
Just like me! Did she have a grandpa, too?

Tori enters from stage left. Before entering the room, she sees the special moment and waits out of sight of Victor and Crystal.

VICTOR
Oh yes, indeed! Her grandfather was the King. The King had been blessed with two beautiful daughters. His eldest daughter, Princess Victoria blessed the King with a perfect granddaughter.

Princess Crystal filled the Kings' heart with love, hope and laughter day and night.

CRYSTAL
You tell pretty stories, Grandpa. I love you!

VICTOR
I love you, Princess Crystal.

Victor rocks Crystal.

CRYSTAL
In our story, I want Princess Crystal to make the King all well, ok?

VICTOR
(trying not to cry)
Yes, yes, she will.

INT. MASTER BEDROOM – ONE HOUR LATER

Tori and Stephen's bedroom…They are in bed, sitting up.

STEPHEN
How are we going to explain this to Crystal?

TORI
When I understand it all, I'd be happy to explain it to her.

STEPHEN
Come here.
(they hold each other)
Me, too. Maybe we can figure it out together.

TORI
Thank you for being strong for me, Steve.

STEPHEN
You're welcome. And Tori--thank you for being my best friend and letting me be yours.

TORI
You always will be.

STEPHEN
You are really beautiful, Tori. I'm glad I married you.

She kisses him deeply.
A LOUD BANG is heard from outside the door.

TORI
Oh God, Stephen! It was from Daddy's room!

They both rush out of the bed as quickly as they can, grabbing bathrobes.

INT. HALLWAY

Victor is at the bottom stairs. Tori goes to Victor.

TORI
Daddy!

STEPHEN
Vic, are you all right? Did you fall from the top of the stairs?!

TORI
Just call 911, Stephen, now! Please!

Victor has his head on his knees, motions with his hand to stop.

VICTOR
(muffled, head still down)
No! No ambulance!

STEPHEN
Should I call David, then?

Tori sits on the floor, in front of Victor. Crystal runs toward Victor, Stephen intercepts her.

CRYSTAL
Grandpa! What happened?!

VICTOR
(hand up again)
Please, get her out of here! I don't want her to see me like this...Please!

Crystal cries and is fighting to get out of Stephen's arms. Stephen is too close to the edge of the top of the stairs.

STEPHEN
Victor, please--shut up! I'll get her out!

TORI
Stephen!

Tori runs up the stairs and catches him before he falls on the steps. In the melee, Crystal gets out of Stephen's grip and darts down the stairs straight to Victor.

CRYSTAL
I can kiss you and make it better, Grandpa.

VICTOR
No, it's alright, sweetheart. Grandpa is alright, little princess.

Crystal goes to hug Victor…Victor gently pushes her away from him.

VICTOR
Don't touch Grandpa, okay?

Crystal is confused and about to pout. Then, she notices her hand is wet and looks at curiously. By this time, Tori is right there and about to hand Crystal to Stephen.

TORI
Crystal, sweety, you have to go sleep...

CRYSTAL
NO! Mommy, look!
(holding up her own hand)
Grandpa is hurt real bad!

TORI
(grabbing Crystal's wrist)
Jesus Christ! Stephen!

Stephen has already seen the blood and has Crystal by the waist and rushes her into the bathroom …slams the door and locks it.

STEPHEN
Goddamnit, Tori! I knew something like this would happen if he was in this house!

Victor curls up and sobs into his knees. He's too weak to move and just cries.

TORI
I'm calling the ambulance.

Tori rushes to the bathroom door.

VICTOR
I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
(looking up above)
Bloody coward! Just take me now! Come on, punish me, I'm the sinner!

CRYSTAL
(O.S., crying)
Grandpa, come here! Mommy, where are you?!

Tori comes back to Victor, who is now just rocking with head on knees.

TORI
Daddy, please, tell me what's going on? Does anything hurt?

VICTOR
(pleading)
Only my heart, Princess Victoria -- only my heart.

TORI
Daddy, don't, please. Hold on, okay? If not for me--for Crystal.

CRYSTAL
(O.S.)
Mommy!? I need you!

Tori touches Victor's cheek and goes to the bathroom door, again.

INT. BATHROOM DOOR – OUTSIDE OF DOOR

Tori tries to open the door, it’s still locked.

TORI
Stephen, damnit! Let me in there!

STEPHEN
(O.S. from behind the door)
Take care of your father, Tori. I have my daughter to attend to now.

CRYSTAL
(O.S.)
Mommy! Daddy, let Mommy in!

Tori pounds on the door, she falls against the bathroom door into a sitting position and cries.

CRYSTAL
(O.S.)
Mommy, where are you?!

TORI
Baby, Mommy's right here, waiting for you and Daddy.

STEPHEN
(O.S.)
Crystal, calm down!

CRYSTAL
(O.S.)
Ow! Daddy you're scrubbing too hard! Ouch! You're hurting me! Mommy, make Daddy stop!!!

Crystal continues to cry out and calling for her Mommy.

TORI
She can't calm down, Stephen! You're scaring her to death with all of this. Locking doors and hurting her!

STEPHEN
(O.S.)
You want her to have his blood on her?!

CRYSTAL
(O.S. -- Whimpering)
I love you, Mommy. I'm sorry I was a bad girl today.

TORI
Oh Baby, I love you too. You were not bad. You do not need to apologize. Mommy is sorry.

The door CLICKS open, Tori stands up and Crystal comes running out, wet from head to toe. Mother and daughter hold each other.

CRYSTAL
I'm sorry when I make you and Daddy fight.

Stephen is wet too, and calmer. He stands in the door. He and Tori exchange a look.

TORI
(staring at Stephen)
It's not your fault that Daddy and I argue, okay? It's never your fault. It is ours and only ours.

CRYSTAL
Daddy, do you still love Mommy?

STEPHEN
Yes, of course...we both; I mean, all of us, love you very much.

TORI
Very much.

STEPHEN
Can I tuck you in bed, little one?

CRYSTAL
I want Grandpa to give me a hug first.

TORI
Grandpa is hurt.

Crystal is getting upset.

VICTOR
I'll be alright, Princess Crystal. It's just a little cut. I will hug you goodnight when the doctor puts medicine on it, okay?

CRYSTAL
(pouting, but accepting)
Okay. I love you, Grandpa.

Stephen has his hands on Crystal's shoulders, leading her toward her bedroom.

VICTOR
I love you, too, sweet pea.

Stephen hesitates a moment as he walks close to Tori. They look at one another, mouthing I'm sorry and kiss.

STEPHEN
(to Tori)
I love you.

Tori nods as Stephen touches her face lovingly.

STEPHEN
Mommy will take care of Grandpa and wait for the doctor.

CRYSTAL
Grandpa will tell me another story about Willy!

Stephen leads Crystal to her room. Tori sits beside Victor, on the floor.

TORI
The ambulance will be here soon. Are you hurt badly, Daddy?

VICTOR
Yes, I'm hurt badly--I'm dying, Victoria! It's not fair, I don't want to die like this...not now. I'm supposed to be an old man someday. I should have never come here.

TORI
I wanted you here.

VICTOR
Did your husband agree?

Tori looks down.

VICTOR
It's not fair to make me responsible for destroying your marriage, Princess.

TORI
I still want you here.

VICTOR
Endangering Crystal?

TORI
We can keep her out of your room...you can promise to stop wandering out in the middle of the night...

VICTOR
Victoria, I'm losing control. No, I've lost control. My bloodstream is killing me...my life is ending. I'm already halfway out of this world and fighting to stay. Friends are afraid to call, or perhaps, they think I've already died. Do you know what it's like when people are afraid to touch you? Some are even afraid to walk into the same room.

TORI
No, Daddy, I don't know what it's like.

VICTOR
I hope you never do. It's hard enough to die, let alone, having people treat you like a dead body before the actual event.

Ambulance SIRENS. Stephen returns alone.

TORI
Stay. Please.

INT. VICTOR’S ROOM – FIVE HOURS LATER

David is sitting there with Victor. Victor has a sling on his shoulder.

DAVID
Jason called. The cast really misses you. Some of them may stop by later today.

VICTOR
And you? Do you miss me?

DAVID
Yes, very much. I'm adjusting...

David starts to cry.

VICTOR
My luv, to many tears tonight. Please stop.

DAVID
You're my whole life, Victor. It's not easy to say goodbye.

VICTOR
I know.

DAVID
If you can, on the Other Side--think of me sometime, alright?

VICTOR
Every day.

DAVID
Alright, I'll pull myself together, for you. Do you need anything, Vic?

VICTOR
You. Just stay here until I'm sleeping.

DAVID
Yes.

VICTOR
I've done everything I ever wanted to do, you know.

DAVID
No, you forgot one thing.

VICTOR
What's that?

DAVID
You were supposed to see me through to the end of my life.

VICTOR
Oh, alas, I will.

DAVID
Oxygen?

VICTOR
No, no...it's fine. Really. I just couldn't catch my breath for a minute.

DAVID
You don't sound fine, Vic.

VICTOR
Just sit here, with me, for a while. It's almost time.

DAVID
No, don't say that, Vic. I don't want to hear this...

VICTOR
It's not so frightening anymore, luv.

DAVID
I'll miss you.

VICTOR
Yes, I already miss you.

Victor's breathing is not good. He panics as he gasps, again.

VICTOR
...the prayer, please.

David recites from heart, through choked back tears.

DAVID
The Lord is my Shepard, I shall not want...

TWO HOURS LATER

David is still sitting in a chair beside Victor's bed. Both men are asleep. Tori enters, quietly, and gently wakes David.

TORI
I'll sit with him for a while. You can lie down on the couch downstairs if you want?

DAVID
Yes, I need to be close. Well, you know...

TORI
Of course, I understand.

David gets up slowly, Tori helps him. He leaves. Tori sits beside her sleeping father. Victor breathes uneasily. He wakes up.

VICTOR
Princess...it's time now.

Victor is fully awake, Tori is holding his hand.

TORI
Oh, Daddy...

VICTOR
It's...hard...to...breathe, now.

TORI
I know, Daddy, I'm here. Don't talk if you can't.

VICTOR
Hold...on...Princess. I can't breathe...so well.

TORI
Daddy, you are breathing! Listen to me, you are!

VICTOR
Not ready to die! Don't...let...me...die...luv...

TORI
I won't, I promise...Daddy, try to close your eyes, sleep some more, okay?

VICTOR
Yes...yes...right...I'm so tired. I'll sleep...I just need more sleep...that's all…

Victor drifts off, his breathing erratic. Tori lays her head on his shoulder, softly crying, listening to his heart.

TORI
Daddy, I just want to listen to your breath...but I hear you drifting away from me. I know I'm losing you much too soon.
(looking up)
God, could you let me keep him a little longer?
(taking Victor's hand)
Daddy, I don't know if you can hear me anymore. I feel you all around me now. If we do get another life together, someday, I promise I'll never leave you and I'll love you no matter what. I'll stay with you every day of my life. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for teaching me to dance . . .

INT. TORI’S TEEN BEDROOM – 1977

Teen Tori dances alone in her teenage room, posters on the wall of David Cassidy and other teen heartthrobs. Her desk has a record player and stacks of records. Teen Tori places the needle toward the middle of an LP.

SONG BEGINS: Swayin’ To The Music (Slow Dancin’) by Johnny Rivers

TEEN TORI
One day, Daddy, we can dance at my wedding! I'm sorry I stepped on your feet so much.

Teen Tori dances, looking up as if her father is there.

INT. VICTOR’S ROOM –

Tori still holding the hand of Victor, who is unconscious.

TORI
Thank you, Daddy, for never giving up on me. I know I don't deserve the love you gave me...but I'm glad you did!

Victor gasps and without opens his eyes, he speaks to his daughter. He lifts a weak hand and places it on her head.

VICTOR
If I must die today...I thank God it's with you by my side.

TORI
Hold on, Daddy!

Tori takes Victor hand from her head and sits up…she looks toward the door.

TORI
Violet! David! Stephen! Anyone!
(to Victor)
We'll get an ambulance.

Victor opens his eyes.

VICTOR
No...no, Tori! I want to die here...it's time.

TORI
I'm not ready, Daddy. I need more time.

David runs into the room.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK – ONE WEEK LATER

Tori and Stephen sit on the same bench that Teen Tori and Young Vic sad on in 1977. David and Violet are playing with Crystal a few feet away. David spins Crystal around as she giggles.

Crystal grabs onto Violet as she is dizzy from the spinning, laughing. Crystal one she regains her equilibrium hugs David, tightly

CRYSTAL
(to David)
Are you my Grandpa, too?

DAVID
I'd like to be, little lady.

CRYSTAL
Aunt Violet, is my other Grandpa in heaven?

VIOLET
Yes, sweety. I miss him very much.

DAVID
We all do!

CRYSTAL
Is he ever coming back?

VIOLET
Not here, but he will watch us from heaven.

CRYSTAL
(looking up)
I love you, Grandpa!
(to David)
And I love you, new Grandpa!

Crystal pulls David over to her parents, on the bench.

CRYSTAL
Is it okay if he is my new Grandpa?

TORI
(hesitant)
I don't...
STEPHEN
(pulling Tori closer)
Of course, honey.

DAVID
As long as we always remember your first grandpa.

CRYSTAL
Forever and ever! I promise! Okay, Mommy?

TORI
All right.
(to David)
Thanks for helping her through this.

DAVID
She has that spark of Victor, it's helping me through it, as well. Don't you think so?

VIOLET
Now, Crystal, Aunt Violet and Grandpa David are going to teach you to waltz! Just like our Daddy taught your Mommy and I!

CRYSTAL
You hear that, Mommy and Daddy...I'm going to learn how to watts.

STEPHEN
I better learn to watts, too, then? Don't you want your Daddy to dance at your wedding?
(to Tori)
Sweety, you want to come with us?

TORI
No, I want to sit here a few minutes by myself.

David, Violet, Stephen and Crystal go toward the Great Lawn, giggling. Tori looks toward the other bench.

Victor walks over and sits on the bench, across from Tori. Tori and Victor look at one another. As Tori takes in her father, she sees…

EXT. CENTRAL PARK – AFTERNOON – 1977

We look up from the Great Lawn. Far up, through the balcony of Belveldere Castle we see father and daughter . . .

The music to Shall We Dance by Rogers and Hammerstein begins quietly.

TEEN TORI
Daddy, teach me to waltz! Please?

VICTOR
As only fitting for my Princess Victoria.
(standing and facing Teen Tori)
First, I bow and you curtsy.

Victor (Actor: Tim Curry, this time) bows toward Teen Tori. Teen Tori curtsies.

EXT. CENTRAL PARK – 1988

Both Victor and Teen Tori look over at Tori. They smile at her lovingly.

Victor and Teen Tori begin to waltz, right there, in front of Tori. Tori stands up and she waltzes by herself at her bench, smiling, looking up at her invisible father.
