Drug addiction has been overwhelmingly scattered among the juvenile of this generation. Despite evidence of harmful effects of drug addiction; tobacco, marijuana, phensidyl, yaba etc consumption has increased among the juvenile aged twelve to eighteen years and become the root of other crimes and delinquencies.
Marijuana like tobacco consists of a toxic mixture of gases and particulates, many of which are harmful to the lungs. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have respiratory problems such as daily cough, phlegm production, acute chest illness and the greatest risk of lung infections.
Worldwide, rapid urbanization along with living in the informal settlements such as urban slum areas has poses a changing behaviour of lifestyle of its dwellers particularly the juvenile. Urban informal settlements are characterized by congestion; high levels of unemployment, inadequate social services, extreme poverty, insecurity, crime, hopelessness and social disorganization offer a grime of illicit drug use, drug dealing, theft, robbery, mugging etc.
My recent study found that delinquencies such as theft, robbery, mugging, eve teasing, human trafficking etc are prevalent like drug addiction and drug dealing among the slum juvenile of Dhaka city.
Nahian, an 18 years old slum juvenile said he has dropped out of school after class six because of his delinquent peers. He has taken many types of drugs such as marijuana, phensidyl, yaba etc. He earns twelve thousand taka by selling drugs but he earns only four thousand taka by working at a shop. So he prefers dealing in drugs to earn much money. Some private university students also know him and call him to buy drugs.
Akbar, a sixteen years old slum juvenile, works as day labourer in building construction work. He is addicted to smoking cigarette and marijuana. He starves sometimes but cannot give up smoking. He borrows money and sometimes thieves to buy cigarette and marijuana.
Farhad is an 18-year-old juvenile who takes marijuana regularly. Firstly, he took cigarette. Later, he started smoking marijuana. He said addiction by taking marijuana once a day exists the whole day. So he smokes it instead of cigarette. He gossips with other drug addicted juveniles. They are sometimes used by people to threat or attack their rivals. They take away moneybag, mobile set etc from unknown people when they have a chance.
Drug addiction sometimes pushes juveniles to get involved in crimes and delinquent acts. Addiction usually starts from smoking. Gradually they take other types of drugs such as marijuana, phensidyl, yaba etc. Usually they collect money by working as day labourers or vendors. When they fail to buy drugs through legal income, they deal in drugs or do other delinquent acts such as theft,
