Self-direction is the ability of a child to monitor, play and guide his behavior. Children may not be skilled enough to plan their own behaviors because they tend to explore much with their new world. However, children are cautious of their own acts similar to adults. In fact, some children can manage their own behaviors and use to carry out a plan. They can also monitor their own behaviors through observations and evaluations of their capabilities until they enter the maturity stages where they clearly identify their goals and aspirations in life.
Did you hear a child as if talking to themselves while they are asleep? You might think they are just dreaming but that is basically how private speech or self-talk occur. These small private talks are used for these children to monitor their behaviors, understand their feelings and their thoughts in the simplest way possible: words. On the other hand, adults promote private speech or talks when every adult take the role of a mentor, a teacher or a parent. The need to discuss important matter with a young child may not be that effective when discussed in public. Using the private chit chat opportunity would be a great teaching process on the part of the child knowing that the child internalize the conversation in his little ways possible. There may be questions but children just love to ask questions. When children ask some questions, never barricade the chance to educate the child. It is the way they understand and regulate their mental powers to comprehend the complexities of life.
When adults or teachers promote private talk they promote self-regulation in children. What happens is that children often use private speech or talks in order to focus their thoughts on certain tasks or challenges, like repeating what was just said as a way of reminding themselves. Such emphasizing words and thoughts actually helps the child to comprehend how complex or how simple a situation may be on his own perspectives. This is in a way initiates his self-regulation learning. Moreover, private speech or self talk also shows a decline of impulsiveness in the part of the child because the child is now talking, planning and thinking before acting. So the way that children solve their problems or obstacles become more practical. This is through the plans of action which the form via private speech. In this situation children take the role of an adult who is planning something before doing it.
As adults on the other hand, independent thinking is very common because of the learning curves, processed undertaken during maturity period. There were collaborations, acceptance of ideas, adoption of simple to complex processes and the like. As children mature, the learning process, the gaining of appropriate confidence thus allow them to be self-reliant. This is the reason why adults are capable of handling things right and execute decisions according to their principles. The complexity of life allows the self-talking process diminish gradually. Private or self-talk are on rare opportunities because adults association with other adults happens most of the time. One interesting reality though is that self talk does occur intensively when an adult is faced with a difficult situation or has to execute a major decision in his life.
Lastly, researchers have noticed that children stop self talk if the situation or obstacle is easy enough. Self-regulation is presented when there is a challenge at hand. This is so true because any challenge, small or great, promotes brain stimulation thus allowing self-regulation process to take over and private speech also occur at the time of meditation process.
Self-regulation refers to the ability to focus attention and control behavior. Similarly, self-regulation is focused on the ability of an individual or a child to regulate him or herself through private speech. He must be able comprehend what is asked of him in a given task or situation. The individual must also be able to monitor his behaviors to see if there is coordination with the given task at hand. In doing so, that individual must be able to maintain or avert what he is doing based on his own judgments.
Further, self-regulation is important in school and teachers are the first to acknowledge this. A self regulated student can stay in his designated area and focus on the task given to him by the teachers. He is capable to pay attention when the teacher is discussing or reading aloud without losing the attention focused on the teacher, especially to the learning process the student experiences. Moreover, self-regulation allows the student to be productive, busy accomplishing his lessons even when the teacher is preoccupied with other children. That student is an independent learner because a teacher’s supervision is minimal and yet, the student able to learn more than what is required or taught of him during the day’s lessons.
When does self-regulation starts? Parents can attest to the fact that self-regulation starts even before a child was born. Studies prove that a mother can teach her unborn baby various lessons during conception. This is the reason why mothers are encouraged to sing nursery rhymes, read poems, stories or just to the unborn baby during relaxation period. The unborn baby is a fast-learner individual and self-regulation process starts as early as that period. Moreover, mothers of young babies teach their babies to concentrate on using their flexes in reaching out for their toys, get a firm hold of their nursery bottles when they are being fed and the like. The ability to gain control of the things that surrounds his primal years is itself self-regulation. In addition to this, the baby’s mental power to comprehend and act in accordance to their physical capabilities allows one to take in full control of their speech capabilities or their abilities to communicate with their immediate family members, particularly, the mother.
This mental and physical regulation allows the youngsters to control their emotions at an early age. The bondage of familiar relationship happens during conception with the mother and that strong bond of union between parents and children strengthen the regulation needed for lifetime relationships. The early development of trust, dependability and attachment requires special attention on the part of the parent as this will help the child to ponder this relationship as he or she grows older. When the child’s needs were met, self-regulation follows. One concrete example is during the time the child needs to be fed, he or she asks for attention through crying out loud. When the parent responded to the child’s needs, care is channeled through feeding the baby. As the child learns that when he cries his parents come to him and see what he needs, he will be able to stop crying and express his needs.
Self regulation in child rearing is more of teaching the child how to be self-reliant. One way to help and teach this process is to show and encourage him or her how to act accordingly. This teaching can be made through constant communication or reminders on what is best for him or her, what is good and what is beneficial. Regardless if the child is yet to utter clear words, parents must buy time to positively describe and explain to the child that what he is doing can help him relate his actions to words. The child will soon learn to talk may use “self-talk” to help regulate his behavior. Self-talk is private speech where the child learns to “remind” himself what to do. Hence, children learn to self regulate through the parents’ patience and actions. Practice what you preach is something that required in a household as this is the initial way on how to teach the children how to regulate their behaviors accordingly.
The role of private speech in the development of our children cannot be overlooked. A lot of research has been done into this phenomenon and it has been found to be of extreme benefit to children. Private speech enables the transformation of the child from that self-control that is enforced by their teachers to self-regulation that they use to aid them through life. It aids them in taking on the adult role of focus and encouragement but focused on the motivation of self.
It can be often seen that the child that used private speech is better self-motivated and has more self-confidence than the child that does not. The child that takes on private speech as a mode of learning is able to grasp hold of the role of the adult and they are able to be more independent. With the installation of the knowledge and know how of how to handle situations the use of private speech will dissipate to a very low level and only surface in difficulty. If a child has met difficulty there are typically three scenarios that can arise.
The first is that the child becomes frustrated and unhappy. This can be very detrimental to the development of the child as it can manifest itself in their performance at school, at home and even in their health. The step is that they will give up. This is also never desirable because we wish to prepare our children for the potholes in life. The second scenario is where the child will be aided by an adult in the accomplishment of the desired goal or overcoming of the problem. Nothing is wrong with this balanced by self thought and self direction or regulation but if the child is always dependent on an adult to bail them out this can lead to more serious problems as they get older and are forced to function on their own in society.
The third scenario is that the child can utilize the tool of private speech to coach themselves through a though situation, a dilemma or a problem. They may not always overcome the situation but with logical thinking they avoid the feeling of inadequacy that can arise, as they are aware of the fact that they have done their best and are satisfied that the circumstances are beyond their control. Private speech is an important tool for children that they can use to become independent and that can bridge between the stages of collaboration and self-regulation or direction.
In order to promote self-direction and private speech we as adults have to provide the correct circumstances for children to develop these skills. This entails ensuring that children are challenged in their tasks. When children face no challenges they never seek to work through them and are not self-directed. They do not talk and interact without challenges to work on. There is also another step, which is removal in stages of the adult direction. We have to remove some of the control in the environment to allow self-direction because if we control everything there is no opportunity for the child to practice self-direction.
It is important to promote the self-direction and regulation of children so that they are better equipped to handle the troubles they will face in life. We have to allow room for private speech and give children some responsibility over their actions and some control in order to prepare them to think independently in life eventually.

Children need to learn positive thinking as they grow up. The earlier they learn that they can do something the better. It takes us as parents to assist our children with thinking positive, but ultimately it is up to them to complete their goals.
Never tell children that they can’t do something or they’ll never get it done right. This is negative talk and their brains will catch on to that very quick. Children need to learn that with effort they can achieve whatever they set their minds to. Teach them the value of mind-set and how it works.
Let children no matter what know that they will learn to do what they really want. They need to know that mistakes happen and next time they can try it a different way.
Children can be mean when they are going up by saying things and not realizing that it could hurts their friend’s feelings. If you hear a child telling another that they are stupid say something positive to them by telling the child that it was just a mistake and can be changed. Explain that no one is stupid; we learn by making mistakes.
Teach children that they are somebody and can achieve goals just like everyone else. Have contest with a group of children. Be sure that every wins something for trying to win. Whatever effort they put into it is a goal for them.
Our brains learn what they hear. When we hear negative things about us all the time we begin to program our brain to think negative. Later on in time the brain will tell us in self-talk that we can’t do something and low and behold we won’t achieve what we want.
As children hear their subconscious telling them negative things they will begin to lose their self-esteem and confidence that they can’t do something so why try to finish or do better. Children are what we teach them.
Teach your children to think positive by encouraging them to keep trying that they can do it in time with practice. Practice makes perfect and positive thinking will teach them they can and will be successful in whatever they want.
We need to think positive in order to teach our children to use positive thinking in self-talk. We need to talk positive to ourselves and them to teach them self-confidence and awareness.
Teach children to use positive thinking when making decisions. If they make the wrong decision discuss it with them and explain that they make a mistake. Talk to them and explain that they should have done this and why. If it doesn’t work they should know and realize that they can try to do differently again.
