There once was a young Princess
who always dreamed of being in love
Every night as she went to sleep
she asked her fairy god mother,
"Oh please, let me marry young
and have lots of children
and grow old with one special man
Who would love me like no other can."
She would seal her wish with a promise
that, if her love was granted, she would
Do just about anything!
One night, just after making her vow
a black bird came tapping on her window
she rushed to let the poor little bird in
and the bird transformed before her
into a tall, thin man, dressed all in black
with shocking white hair and a pointed chin
the man bowed for the Princess and said
"I am the man who will make
All your wildest dreams come true!"
Without a second thought, the
Princess begged for true love
One that would triumph over any other.
The crow-man agreed, under only one condition
"Anything!" the princess vowed carelessly
the crow-man smiled slyly and said
"You will have true love in the form
of a man who will love you like no other
a man who would die for you in a
heartbeat, but...
if you don't truly love him back
then on your wedding night
you will lose him forever more"
The Princess agreed to the exchange
she believed in her heart that if a man loved her
then she would love him as well, simple as that
the crow-man bowed low once more and said,
"There, the deed is done and tomorrow
You will meet true love at half past one!"
With that the spell was cast and the man
transformed once more into a crow
he flew off into the night
leaving the Princess to watch
Until he was far out of sight.
The next day the Princess
was by the pond when she
realized it was time for her
to meet the love of her life
a lonely looking man strolled by
and stopped in front of the Princess
he smiled and said, "Are you the one?"
The Princess was confused
she believed she would know her love the
moment she saw him, but this man
he was not what she expected at all
For one, he was a commoner
and she always thought she would
love a dashing prince from a far off land
for another he was plain, his features
seemed dull and ordinary and she had
always imagined a beautiful man
with golden locks and bright blue eyes
but the man obviously adored her
as he got down on his knees and pledged
his undying love for her, the most
beautiful princess he had ever seen
The wedding date was set
and soon plans were being made
the Princess was caught in a whirlwind
of preparations, dress fittings, and color schemes
she was the happiest she had ever been
and she thought that it meant she was in love
even though she was looking forward to the wedding
and not really the man who would be standing
waiting for her at the alter in a black suit
waiting to say "I do" and to bond them together
forever and ever to be a pair, a perfect set of two
The night before her wedding
the Princess was nearly asleep
when the crow once again tapped on her window
she rushed to open it, worried
worried he might be here to take away her bliss
"Ah, little Princess, are you sure you are in love?"
The Princess was outraged, how could he question her?
"Forced love is a cheap trick compared to
the realm, true blue bliss of ever lasting love
if you are wrong, if you don't love him truly
then you will be forever cursed
never to know real love again"
The Princess was scared
but she refused to show it
she swore she was in love
and she banished the crow man
from her sight and pushed him out the window
she tried the rest of the night
to go to sleep as peacefully as before
but she tossed and turned and worried
about the crow-mans promised fate
what was true love, anyway
The next morning she was tired
as her ladies in waiting primped her
they powdered and perfumed her body
and dressed her in her wedding gown
soon she glowed with the beauty of
a blushing virgin bride
but inside she was so afraid
before she knew it, she was walking
down the aisle toward her groom
she forced a smile even though
in her heart she knew, something was wrong
The Princess was numb through the Priests words
and when the time came, her groom said "I do"
it was her turn, and automatically, she parroted him
"I do" her feeble reply
and with those words the curse was sealed
her groom screeched in agony
as his body twisted writhed in pain
he was transforming into a little bird
The Princess felt pain as well
deep in her chest her heart was shrinking
shrinking away into nothingness
never to be used again
When the deed was done
the chapel was quiet and still
the heartless Princess felt tears running
down her cheeks in streams
but she could not feel the pain
that caused her to cry
she felt no loss, no suffering
she felt no sadness, no longing
her heart was gone from her chest
so, stiffly, she reached down and held
the bird that had been her groom
she found a small cage and locked him away
he did not fight, still loyal to his human love
she walked out of the church without a word
She moved without thinking or feeling
her feet moving forward without meaning
she found herself on the edge of her land
the very edge of her world
over looking the raging sea
here she released the bird who had loved her
the one that she could not love in return
and without a thought or a word
without any sadness at all
the Princess leapt out over the raging surf
and ended her loveless life
