Buying

 

 

Renting in New York City can be a total nightmare, no tax breaks, having to deal with landlords who only want rent money and no repairs. There was one landlord who refused to give back the rent security until he was taken to court and his bank account freezed.

 

I decided to buy something at the time, 1999 i was pre qualified for $139,000 and that was with two salaries. I was living in Park Slope and wanted to stay in the neighborhood but couldn't afford to buy a house so I started looking for a condo or co-op. Looked at a few places but nothing. There was an ad in the Village Voice newspaper for a two bedroom two bath condo in park slope for $129,000. I went to see it and told the owner to cancel all the rest of his appointments and I would offer $139,000. I gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. I saw all the appointments he had schedule. No way was I going to let that opportunity pass by. The contract was signed and there was an agreement for the sellers to have thirty days from the closing to vacate the property.

 

There was a mortgage company on Park Avenue in Manhattan who really helped. I
