I am bundled up with blankets on my favorite chair in the living room that faces the window reading my favorite book. I recently broke my heart again but this time over my three month old puppy that had gotten run over by my old best friend , Lacy, when pulling into my driveway. The book is somewhat lifting my spirits but every time I think of Whisper, my poor little chocolate lab mix I start to cry again. My cozy little house is filled with emptiness without her. The rich and vibrantly colored furnishings seem bland. Whisper first arrived at my house as a present from my most recent boyfriend, John, with a single red rose tied around her neck. I fell in love with that dog faster then I fell in love with John which is one of the reasons he broke up with me. Then one day as I opened the door Whisper raced out and..... Well you get the point.
A sharp rap on the door rouses me from my melancholy thoughts. I unwrap myself quickly and head to the closest mirror. I hurriedly make myself presentable or as close as I can get in my pajamas and robe. I open the door to find the person I least wanted to see.
“Anna,” Lacy says in her famous soft silky voice, “I’m sorry. I didn't mean to run Whisper over. She was so small I didn't see her from my truck. So to make up for it I brought you....this." She walks back to her big white truck that matches the snow and comes back with a little black puppy. " Anna, this is your new puppy though she doesn't have a name. I know it won't replace Whisper but I'm sure you'll have many happy memories together." With that Lacy runs back to her big white truck that matches the snow and starts it up and leaves me with a shivering puppy in the snow so that I can't give it back. I looked at the puppy hard and try not to cry for this puppy has a single red rose tied around her neck just like Whisper.
