That’s what Love Is
Julia was outraged. She could not believe it. After a night of passionate, mad, and almost brutal lovemaking, there he was. Sitting there on the couch, waiting up for her to come home. Her husband, Damon was patiently waiting for her.
“Are you hungry?” he asked, as she just stood there starring over at him. “No, I ate while we were hanging out”. “Oh, well I am having a ham and cheese sandwich myself”. So Julia said, “Why are you still awake? Normally you would be sleeping deeply by now’.” I guess I was just missing my wife”, he said. As he ate his sandwich she was thinking back to the wonderful dinner that she had just shared with Carmel.
They had just encountered crab cakes, lobster and rice pilaf. A very expensive bottle of champagne to wash it all down. At home she would have endured a ham and cheese sandwich and some Kool-Aid. She kind of felt bad about it, but who was she kidding? She wanted and deserved the best and this was not it, at all.
Damon had gotten off work early, and took a ride over to where the private investigator told him that his wife frequented often. He walked around the house listening through the windows until he heard voices, and true enough, he listened until he recognized his wife’s voice. He was devastated, so much in fact that he lost his footing and fell. He did not get hurt physically; it was only his ego that got bruised pretty badly.
After sitting there sobbing for a while, he decided to go on home and wait for her. He told himself that it was his fault that she had taken refuge with another man, and it was up to him to fix the problems in their marriage.
He needed and wanted his wife, and nothing else mattered at this point. He knew that he had to man-up and straighten things out before he lost her for good. Damon started sending his wife bouquets of flowers weekly, bringing candy home to her and buying her a more expensive brand of jewelry. He decided to give her more attention even if it meant taking some time off work. This was working out great for her, but wearing him out.
He told her that he loved her, and wanted to be able to trust her. She assured him that he could trust her. Julia wanted to know why he thought that he could not trust her. He told her that crazy thoughts had been going through his mind and to just forget about it. He told her that he knew she was faithful, and would remain so.
Julia was comparing her married life to the fantasy life that she was busy living out with Carmel. The fantasy life far outweighed the reality of her married life. She loved Damon but she was bored stiff, and needed some excitement in her life. Carmel supplied everything that Damon could not.
Carmel made a suggestion to her that they go away together and start their new and exciting life. He promised her that she would never be bored with him, and she did not have a reason to doubt what he had promised.
Carmel told her that while Damon was just going through the motions, he on the other hand, had delivered. He told her that love does what it says, and love gives, unconditionally.
He had the wherewithal to make her dreams come true. She deserved the best of everything, and he could, and would give that to her. He also told her that she only needed to open her beautiful hazel eyes to see the truth.
She really loved Damon because of the person he was, and not just for the material things in which he provided for her. He never went after the most expensive things, but always bought nice things for her and them as a family.
Carmel on the other hand, lived extravagantly and did buy the most expensive things. He showered her with diamonds, expensive clothes and shoes, which Damon would never buy for her. She was not used to this lifestyle, but did long for it. It just did not include her husband, and that fact bothered her.
She had definitely gotten caught up with this man and all that he offered to her. As she was packing her suitcases with some of her belongings to leave him, she began to cry. What was she thinking? She could not leave her husband, and for what? She wiped her tears away and told herself that she deserved this life and wanted it for herself.
Damon would eventually forgive her, and move on with his life because he was a forgiving man, and that was part of why she loved him so much. By the time she made it to the airport and met up with him she had changed her mind. She could not leave her husband for him or anybody else, ever. Damon was loving and decent and would never cheat on her.
She and Damon had been married for over six years now, but things really got boring to her after the first four years. She was hoping things would somehow pick up and get better for them. Damon worked for his dad at their family business.
He was a good provider and husband. He provided for her happily, and without hesitation. She could not have everything that she wanted, but she did know how to be content with such things as she had.
Damon did not want her to work, so she was a stay at home wife. She never really got the cooking thing, so they ate fast food a lot during the week. Julia did love her husband and tried to be a good wife to him. Their marriage provided the stability and protection that she needed, and she loved that.
She did not want to defy her husband, but she had to do something. She decided to sell Avon from home. He was alright with this, because that last thing he wanted was for her to be bored. He really loved his wife, and promised to provide for her. She did like that fact.
Damon was six feet tall, with brown shoulder length hair. His eyes were a beautiful emerald green, and he had deep long dimples. His skin was olive colored. Oh! Yes, he was definitely the right man for her, which is, until she met Carmel.
He stood about six feet two-inches tall, with very broad shoulders. His hair was jet black, and he kept it in a crew cut. His eyes were of an almond color. He was sort of scruffy looking with the beard and all. She fell in love with him, fast and furious. He was a wealthy land developer, and did she ever enjoy getting to know him better.
They had been seeing each other for over a year now, and she could not see herself giving him up not now, not ever. He seemed to enjoy buying her expensive jewelry and clothes. She was a very gracious and thankful recipient.
Julia and Damon met in high school. He was a senior, and she was a sophomore when they met. Julia was a bit of a nerd, and he was the captain of the football team. He was very popular with the girls.
The head cheerleader was after him of course, but he only had eyes for Julia. She was very intelligent, especially in mathematics, and he needed a tutor. His counselor suggested that he ask her to help him, and that was the start of their love affair.
Damon had dated quite a few girls and was sexually active, but Julia was a virgin and wanted to remain that way until she got married. He was really into her, but did not know if he could deal with that.
He graduated high school and went off to college. She knew that she would have no problem staying faithful to him, but did not know if he would remain faithful to her. She did not want to put any pressure on him, so they broke up, and decided to just be friends.
After college, he moved back home, and they picked right up where they left off. They were in love with each other, and that is all they needed to know. He proposed and she said “yes”. His promise to provide for her was just icing on the cake.
Julia’s family did not have much when she was growing up, but they did have a lot of love. Both of her parents worked, and with five children, it was all they could do to make ends meet sometimes.
Damon on the other hand had one brother, and his parents owned a car garage. In Julia’s eyes his family was rich, and she could use some of that.
She started working in a department store while in high school, and after she graduated, she went full time. The fact that she was making money, and could afford to buy her own clothes and shoes was a definite plus for her.
The fact that she was able to help out with the household finances, gave her a sense of gratitude, because she understood the stress that her parents were under, and wanted to help out any way she could.
After she and Damon got married, he informed her that she was his queen, and the queen of the castle did not work, but rather lounged around in luxury. She often wanted to ask him” where her luxury was, because she was longing to lounge in it”. She did love the idea and embraced it. The fact that her husband wanted more for her, made her fall in love more with him. He was the sweetest man she had ever known, well, that is outside of Carmel.
Julia had gotten bored with her marriage, and Damon knew it, so he bought her a puppy, and they named her Tippy. She got to know the little puppy, and loved her very much, but she managed to get bored again. She decided to take Tippy to the park one day, and that’s when she met Carmel. If she were not married this would have been the perfect pair.
Damon had a feeling that something was not right with their marriage. Julia was filled with the type of excitement that comes from sexual contentment and they had not been intimate for the last seven or eight days. She seemed to be in a constant state of bliss.
Even though the thought of her seeing someone else had entered into his mind he just could not get with that. He never questioned her at all about it, not one time. He had confided in his dad about his feelings, but dismissed the idea all together. The love they shared would not allow for another to intervene. As far as he was concerned they were completely complete. He was convinced that their marriage was rock solid.
Damon decided to take his wife on vacation to Jamaica for a week. In all of the time that they had been married, except for the three days for the honeymoon, he had not taken any time off work. Now he felt that he had to do something to save his marriage if it was indeed in trouble. Julia fell in love all over again with her husband and remembered the reason she said yes to his marriage proposal.
He was hoping that they would be pregnant by the time they returned home. Damon knew he had done the right thing by this vacation, because of the way that her eyes sparkled whenever she looked at him. He had not seen that sparkle in years, and had forgotten about it. He had hit the jackpot when he took his wife to Jamaica for a week.
One day, after delivering her Avon orders to clients, she quickly went home to take a long hot bubble bath before her meeting with Carmel, for dinner. Carmel told her that he was fixing prime rib with new potatoes and asparagus tips. Of course they had a nice bottle of wine to finish it off. She could not wait to see him, and enjoy that home cooked meal.
She opened the front door, and there was Damon in the kitchen. He had soft music playing, candles lit, and he was pouring the Chinese food out of the carryout boxes onto the dinner plates. Oh yeah, there was a bottle of arbor mist chilling in the wine bucket.
She could not believe this, and asked “what are you doing here?” and he said “can’t a man come home to surprise his wife with dinner?” She smiled and nodded yes, hesitantly. They had a wonderful evening and ended it with a long night of lovemaking.
Waking up the next morning, the only thing she could think about was how she missed Carmel, and that wonderful meal.
Damon was still home after nine a.m. and she was curios as to why. He informed his wife that he had taken the day off to spend it with her and tomorrow too. She quickly told him that” she was meeting with her Avon representative tomorrow afternoon, and would be busy the rest of the evening”.
She told him that he was very sweet for even considering her, and that she loved him, but next time tell her in advance, so that she could cancel any plans that she had.
He decided to take Tippy out for a walk, and that gave her time to call her lover and apologize. He told her that all was forgiven, and he was a patient man, so he would wait for her. By the time Damon got back with Tippy he was tired, but was ready for sex with his wife. All she wanted was to be left alone, so she could go to Carmel.
Things seemed to be back on track now, as she made it back home from spending the morning with her lover. She pulled into the drive way, only to find her mother-in-law sitting in her car patiently waiting. “Where have you been?” she asked, “just hanging out with some friends” Julia said. She wanted to ask her what are you doing here anyway but did not dare do it.
Julia quickly invited her in for a cup of tea, and to catch up. She was so ready for her to leave so that she could take a nap, and get ready for Damon to come home. “If I did not know better, I would say that you are having an affair on my son”. “Why would you even think like that?” she said. “You are glowing uncontrollably, I might add”.
“Why won’t you and Damon have a baby anyway?” she asked her. Julia responded “we are not ready for a baby yet”. Damon’s mom gave her a look of disappointment, and that ended the conversation.
Mom picked up an Avon book, and placed several orders with Julia. Evidently he and his mom had talked, because for the rest of the week all he talked about was having a baby.
On Monday, she was not feeling well, so she stayed in bed all day long. Carmel surprised her by bringing some soup over. She never invited him to her house because that would be inappropriate to say the least. She was ill, so he wanted to do something for her. She was not feeling any better on Tuesday so she went to the emergency room.
Whoa, she was definitely pregnant. Who should she tell? Whose is it? Is this Damon’s baby? All of these thoughts were going on in her head, nonstop. After she finished up, she got home, and immediately called her husband and asked him” to come home”.
He immediately came home to her, and she ran outside to the car before he could get out and told him that they were pregnant. She told Carmel that” she was pregnant, and she had to end their relationship immediately”. He told her that” he would step away for now, but things were far from over, because that baby could very well be his”.
She and Damon enjoyed their pregnancy, and welcomed their little baby boy into the world. They were home now, and enjoying DJ. They both prayed and thanked God for this little bundle of joy.
Damon’s mom asked them” who the baby looked like? Because she saw no resemblance to her son”. Neither one of them responded, pretending not to hear her. Damon heard loud and clear.
After bathing the baby, and putting him to bed, Damon asked his wife” if there was anything that she needed to tell him?” Of course she said” no honey”. He said “are you sure?” and she replied “no” shaking her head also. He let her know that he wanted a paternity test done, and she cried, because she did not want him doubting the fact that he was this baby’s daddy.
Damon let her know that there was no secret, because he knew about the affair she was having. She was shocked, and hugging him tight, she apologized over and over again. He told her that “he loved her so much, and there was nothing that she could do to change that fact”. Of course, he forgave her, because he knew that she was bored, and he was her first, so she probably needed to do that.
“I love you more than you will ever know, and if DJ is not mine. Nobody will ever need to know but us”. “Damon I love you, and you will never know how sorry I am about that stupid decision I made”. Damon really loved his wife and their baby, and would do whatever it took to make things work.
They did have the test done, and Julia was just sick about what the result could be. The truth was that she just did not know who the father was, and this was driving her crazy. The results were back, and Damon told his wife that” whatever the outcome, she was his wife, and he would never stop loving her”. Julia suggested that they hold hands and pray.
The envelope was opened, out came the results and……..
They got home and celebrated their baby, and their love for each other. Carmel came back into the picture, and wanted to know if this was his son. Damon let him know” in no uncertain terms, that this was his baby, and his wife. They were both off limits to him, and that he needed to go and find a suitable mate for himself”. He let Carmel know” that he was not under any circumstances, willing to share his family, any more than he had”.
Carmel came back one more time to bring some gifts for Julia and the baby. She was hesitant about accepting them, but he begged her to keep them and enjoy them. She hugged him and” thanked him for everything that he had done for her. She let him know that she did love him, but she loved her husband more, and needed to remain faithful to him”.
DJ was one year old now. Damon, his brother, and his dad decided to take the baby on his first fishing trip. They took turns teaching him, the art of fishing.
Julia went to Carmel one more time and spent the night with him. The next morning they said” good bye”, and went their separate ways. She tried to return some of the expensive stuff he had given to her, but he would not take it back. He let her know “that he loved her, and those things were expressions of his love”. She thanked him and vowed never to look back.
By the time she got home, he was already in the house, and waiting for her. He asked” if it was over now?” and she told him” yes it is, and I love you and only you”.
Their dad turned the business over to Damon and his brother, but his brother wanted no part of it, so Damon bought his part from him. Now he and Julia owned the car garage. The business was booming, so they bought a bigger house with a white Pickett fence. This was perfect timing because they were expecting baby number two.
Now they had DJ and Deanna, and their family was complete. Julia and Damon decided to put the children in daycare at least two days a week, to give her a break. She would work at the garage with her husband on those two days as the receptionist. This went well for about two years.
She took Tippy and the children to the park to play for a while. She looked up from her phone messages, and there he stood, Carmel, and he was looking so good and very sexy to her.
All of those old feelings came back like a flood, and took over her common sense. He asked” how everything was going?” and she could not stop stuttering and stammering over every word. And the bad thing was, she could not stop it, no matter how hard she tried.
“Sounds like somebody could use a vacation” he said and then she replied “this body could definitely use one” and they both laughed.
DJ came over and asked” who he was?” and she told him “he’s just an old friend baby”. He turned and walked back to Deanna and Tippy. Carmel gave her his phone number, and left quietly.
Julia told Damon that” she wanted to go to Memphis with her sister for the weekend” and he called his parents, to ask” if they would keep the children, because he worked on Saturdays”. They were delighted at the opportunity to baby-sit, and jumped right on it.
Julia met Carmel at the airport, and they were on their way to Memphis for the weekend. This is exactly what she needed right now. She felt light and free.
Damon and Tippy had the house all to themselves. She was a good dog, and very well behaved. He decided to buy her a new car while she was away. Julia told Carmel that” she knew how wrong she was, but she could not help herself. This just felt right and good”. They made a deal, that they would meet once every three months just to keep their sanity.
She got home on Sunday in a very good and festive mood. Damon asked her to go out to the garage, and get the hammer for him. She looked at him, but then headed on out the door. She opened the garage door, and there it was. A silver Lexus, with beautiful leather seats, and a big bright red ribbon tied around it.
Tears streamed down her face, and she cried uncontrollably for about ten minutes. She had to pull herself together, but guilt was eating away at her. She told Damon that “she loved it, but knew that she did not deserve it”. He reminded her that” she was his queen, and she did deserve the best of everything that he could give to her”.
They decided to take the children and Tippy out for a car ride. They ended the day by having a picnic in the park. Julia thought” why can’t I just enjoy being a wife and mother? What is wrong with me?” She really loved her husband, and their children and being right here was all she needed. Contentment was all over her, and she could not ask for anything more.
Now she needed another hobby other than Carmel. She wanted to start her own business, but what? She was pondering cooking or sewing or maybe doing hair and nails. Not one of those was interesting enough.
She had it; she would go back to school and take accounting classes. Surely this would keep her busy and away from him. This was turning out for the best. She was busy being a mother, student, wife and most of all she was her husband’s queen.” Who had time for an extra marital affair?”
Now they had been married for eight years, and she was finally happy in her marriage. She did not want to risk spending any more time with Carmel, so she suggested that they move to another state.
Damon could not believe what she was asking him to do, and told her” to really sit down, and think about things. They would be leaving their home, livelihood, families and friends, and for what?” She thought about what he was saying, and apologized, and let him know that it was just a thought.
On the next day, she and the children went to the mall to do some shopping, and she spotted him.
He was standing next to a woman, and they were looking at baby clothes and actually seemed to be enjoying it. He looked up, and saw her, and walked over to her. She said hello, and he quickly introduced her to his wife.
Julia was stunned, and in disbelief, until she noticed that this woman looked to be about seven or eight months pregnant. Julia congratulated them, wished them luck on everything, and went on her way.
When she got home, and got the children settled, she thought about them, and the fact that she did not get jealous about it, and those old feelings never came up once. She took a deep breath, and realized that it was definitely over now……
