“Katie’s Fall”
A short story by
Michelle Alexis
As Katie walked through the front gate of the school, she wondered if she had made the right decision choosing this school. The school was one of the best schools in the state; this was one of the things that had drawn Katie. She had begged her parents since the day they told her they were moving. She could even sleep the night before. The school looked like a fresh painting, with its modern design and striking colours. She walked through the school and found the assembly hall packed with students and teachers. She scanned the hall and noticed something. Everybody knew each other, and she knew no one. The thought struck her hard, but she put it aside. A loud and disturbing noise erupted. It took some moments for Katie to realize that it was the school bell. Katie grasps the fact that they were being dismissed to their classes.
“How peculiar”, she thought.
She was expecting a warm welcome from the Principal. She followed a group of students out of the hall.
The next day, Katie found herself sitting alone for lunch. The cafeteria was crowded, even though some students chose to sit outside. It was also a cacophony of loud chatter. Each table sat teenagers huddling up, raising their voices to be heard above the uproar. She was off in a daze when suddenly she caught a group of teenagers looking at her. They quickly turned around when Katie caught them. Katie blinked, slightly blushing and surprised. She could somehow hear the giggling of the girls. The boys peeked over at her every now and then, with grins on their faces.
After finishing her lunch, Katie stood up from the table. Out of nowhere, a girl stood in front of her. She jolted back in surprise. Katie looked at her from top to bottom. She was pretty and had a great, slim figure. Her light brown hair was tied up in a high ponytail. Her face was caked with make-up; her almond-shaped eyes were covered with black eye shadow. Her lips were small and pout, also covered in layers of nude lipstick. She was slightly taller than Katie, and she had curves. She waved her long slim arm. Katie snapped out of her observation. The girl said,
“Hi, my name is Sasha. Nice to meet you.”
All Katie could do was stare. The girl stood there, waiting for Katie’s answer.A few moments later, Katie croaked,
“I’m Katie.”
Katie sat silently and watched the group as they were in deep discussion. Sasha had invited Katie to sit with the group. They were talking about ehat they should do for the weekend. The boy with blond hair and blue eyes suggested that they should go to an all-ages club and sneak in some alcohol. Then, a girl who looked exactly the same as the boy, who Katie thought must be his twin, suggested that they should go to the beach instead. Katie looked around the table. She was looking at the end of the table when she caught the other boy staring ar her. He looked away quickly. She took the chance to observe him. He has light brown eyes and dark fine hair. His jawline was angular and he looked like something out of a fairytale.
"So Katie, what do you think?", Sasha asked.
Katie who had not been listening instantly said,
"Yeah sure, sounds fun."
That weekend they picked her up and drove toward the city. Katie had told her parents that she was going out with a bunch of friends. Her parents were squealing like little kids on a christmas morning. They were passing the bridge that let to the city. Katie had found out that the blonde girl and boy were twins. Their names were Maddie and Kyle. Right after the bell rang for the end of lunch, the boy with light brown had introduced himself. His name was Jordan, he had said. He was riding shotgun, and Kyle was driving carefully, his eyes were glued on the road. They were entering the city now. Katie was in awe as she watch the city glowed. For once, she felt alive and excited. She had never been to the city with her friends. It was either she did not have any friends or her friends' parents were protective. Or maybe it's just an excuse her friend gave her. A few minutes later, Kyled parked in front of an all-ages club called Pandemonium.
They got out of the car and Sasha went in to buy tickets. Katie wished she had chosen a better outfit instead of jeans, sneakers and a plain t-shirt. Suddenly, Jordan was standing beside her. He was wearing kaki pants and a black, button down shirt. He looked classy, elegant. Katie liked guys who dressed well. He was looking away and Katie, yet again, took the chance to observe him. For some reason, she found him beautiful, like a fallen angel. He turned around and caught her. He smiled a little. He put his hands in his pockets. He said,
"So, what do you think?"
Katie, too stunned to reply, croaked,
"Of what?"
"The city."
He looked up at the sky, and then back at her and said,
"You look like you've never been here before."
"Well, I have never been here", she lied.
He looked surprised and said,
Well then, I should take you here more often."
Katie blushed at that. He said I. Him. Only him. She blushed even harder. Sasha came back with the tickets and distributed them. Katie walked towards the entrance and hesitated. She shrugged and gave the bouncer her ticket.
As Katie entered the club, the smell of sweat and smoke instatly assaulted her nostrils as she inhaled deeply. She looked around and saw the dancefloor. It looked inviting and mesmerising. Out of her will she slowly walked towards it. Katie jolted when she felt a hand grabbing hers. Katie traced the owner of the hand only to find Jordan. He looked at her and smiled. Without hesitation, he pulled her along with him. They had to squeeze through a sea of sweating bodies.
They finally found a spot. Katie stood there; her head hung low. She felt nervous. Jordan looked at her with a blank face and asked,
"What's wrong? Do you want a drink?"
Katie looked up and nodded.
"Okay, I'll be right back", and he was gone.
Katie felt nauseous. She had never been in a place where it was so crammed. Music was blasting in her ears. The ground shoook beneath her feet. For some reason, her body started moving to the rhythm. She slowly close her eyes and let the music took her. A few moments later, Jordan came back with two red plastic cups. Katie took it and sniffed. Beer.
"Thanks", she said and smiled for the first time that night.
"Are you enjoying yourself?", Jordan was screaming.
"Yes!", Katie yelled back. "It's really loud though!"
Jordan laughed, his voice inaudible. He looked at her with glassy and dancing eyes. He placed his hands on her waist, and moved her with him. Soon, they were two souls, sharing a body.
For the whole night they danced and drank. Katie had never drunk before. The closest thing she got was sipping a vodka mis from her sister. At this point, she was so drunk that everything was a blur and whatever her friends said was funny. All she could realise is that she was sitting on a ouch and Jordan sitting beside her, his arms on her shoulders. She saw Jordan grinning at Kyle. Then, he whispered into her ear,
"Come with me."
Katie got up unsteadily, almost tripping over. Jordan caught her before she stumbled. They went out of the club and Jordan hailed a taxi. All Katie could make out was a voice mentiong an address. That was the last thing she remembered before she passed out.
When they arrived at Jordan's house, Katie had fallen into a deep sleep. Jordan had to carry her on his back. Fortunately, his parents were out of town for the weekend, or he would have been smacked with questions. He managed to unlock the front door and went inside. He carried her up the stairs to his bedroom, andlaid her down on his bed. He covered her with a blanket and sat beside her. He stared at her intensely. There was something about her that made Jordan want her. The way she was shy and awkward entertained him. Her vulnerability gave him a chance to reach out to her. Without realising, he leaned down and kissed her soft lips. She tasted bittersweet and lovely. Her eyes fluttered open and she looked at him with sleepy eyes. She kissed back.
The next morning Katie woke up with a pounding in her head. She felt dizzy and queasy. She looked around the room and realised that she was in a guy's room. She sat up slowly and felt a chill. She looked down and saw that the only thing that was covering her was a blanket. Oh God, she thought as the memory of last night came rushing back to her. Her hand flew to her mouth. What have I done. A few moments later, Jordan stood by the door, watching her.
"Are you okay?", he asked.
She took a moment to reply.
"I'm fine", she said.
She got out of bed and immediately got dressed. She ignored Jordan who had his eyes glued on her. She stormed out of the room. He followed her down the stairs and grabbed her arm. Katie was in shocked, and jerked her arm.
"Here's my number if you ever need me, for anything", he said to her flatly.
Katie stared in disbelief. She took it anyway and walked away, not looking back.
For the past few months, Katie had never felt so sick and tired. She got morning sickness and refused to eat anything. Her boobs hurt and felt like they weigh a ton. She looked pale and skinny. One evening, she was looking at herself in the mirror when she noticed that she had a bump on her belly which was unusually big. She gasped and started crying, hard. She placed her hand on the bump and dropped to her knees, the other hand covering her mouth. With a shaking hand, she went through her bag to find her phone. She punched Jordan's number as fast as her shaking could. He picked up on the second ring,
"Hey Katie, what's up? I haven't heard from you in forever."
Katie caught her breath before answering,
"Jordan, I'm pregnant."
Silence.
Katie started crying into the phone. Finally he said,
"I'm sorry Katie, I really am."
He hung up.
Katie was panicking and could not think of a way to confront her parents. What was she supposed to say? She paced back and forth in her room and thought of a solution. Her eyes were red and puffy from all the crying. She thought of the quickest way to end all this mess. Katie's eyes lit up. She rummaged through her desk and took out a pair of sharp scissors. She stared at it, and drew it near her wrist. Her hands were shaking really hard. It'll be quick, she thought. Clean and fast. She closed her eyes and cut herself, deep. Blood came gushing out of he wound she had made. She did the same to other wrist. A few moments later, she blacked out.
The next morning, Katie's parents had found her dead in a pool of blood. They were hysterical. They were screaming for her to get up for school when there was no response. Katie's bedroom door was locked, her dad had to kick it open. They screamed her name and shook her, but she wouldn't wake up. Before they took her to the hospital, they helt her in their arms for one last time. When the doctor finished Katie's autopsy, Katie's parents found out that Katie had been pregnant for four months. Katie's mother exploded in tears and dropped to the hospital floor.
The very next day, they out together a funeral ceremony. Friends and family came to mourn for Katie, even Jordan. He just stood there, watching Katie's dead, cold body being buried. He did not even bother explaining what he did to Katie's parents. He just stood there, feeling numb. At least, he thought, Katie is gone now. Hopefully, in peace.
The End.
