Emily Beth had the best life, a mother that adored her, the latest clothes and shoes from Hottopic and Iron Fist, the best friends she could ask for and the biggest house in town. One day her world came tumbling down, it had been a few months after her father died that her mother had to go to the hospital because she was giving birth to her new baby sister.
She was waiting impatiently for about an hour before the doctor finally came out with her baby sister Hanna Beth. He handed her the baby and took his hat in a way that meant bad news, she looked up at him and frowned.
“Ma’am I’m sorry for your lose….. Your mother didn’t make it.” He said putting on hand on her shoulder. She tried hard to hold back tears and could barely cry, she was in shock she couldn’t even speak. “Is there anyone you could call?” He asked. She nodded and took out her phone.
“Hey… Um Andy could you come pick me up….I’m at the hospital.” She stuttered.
“Yes of course..” He said and hung up. In a few minutes he came running up to her, he hugged her gently because she was holding Hanna.
“Emie I am so sorry…” He said, she ended up crying her eyes out right there. Andrew slowly walked her to the car and drover her home, he was going to stay the night and help out. She put Hanna down in her crib turned on her baby monitor and walked back downstairs.
Andrew was waiting at the bottom of the stairs ready for Emily to cry more, he hugged her tightly and sat down on the couch. “Andy, what am I going to do? I’m only 15.. I can’t take care of her on my own and I am not leaving this house!” She exclaimed. He didn’t say a word just cradled her in his arms and stroked her hair..
~A Few Weeks Later~
“Urg! This is so hard!” Emily cried, Andrew was helping her out with Algebra. She dropped out of school, but still studied when Hanna was sleeping or something. She slammed her book shut and walked into the kitchen, the stress was getting to her and she could barely take it. The phone rang, she chucked it against the wall and slid down the cabinet door crying. Andrew cradled her in his arms again and calmed her down slowly. She sighed and wiped her tears away. She woke up Hanna by breaking the phone and now she had to go check on her. She grabbed a bottle and warmed it up, she rubbed her temples and let out a sigh. She took the bottle out and walked upstairs, she walked past her mother's old room the door just barely open. She pushed it open and walked inside, it was just like it was last time she was in there the bed half way made and her closet a mess.
She dropped to the floor and began to cry more, Andrew was up in her room after hearing the falling noise. He picked her up and helped her into her room where Hanna was. She cleaned her face off and sat on her bed, “Emie let me take care of her... You need some sleep.” Andrew said lying Emily down on her bed.
“Fine.. but make sure nothing goes wrong.” She replied, she lied down and feel asleep to the band A Perfect Circle Andrew was playing while taking care of Hanna. In her dream she saw her mother.
“Mom?” Emily called happily from the stairs. She was in her pajamas and her hair in a side pony tail. “Yes Emily who else?? Now hurry up your going to be late to school!” She called. Emily ran and hugged her, but her mother pulled away “Emily, I need to go you know that but I have to give you some advise..”
“No mom don't leave! What about Hanna? I can't take care of her anymore..” She commanded sadly.
“You are doing an amazing job taking care of your sister, now just remember keep your head held high and I''' always be with you...” She leaned closer and whispered in Emily's ear. “.. And I have some money hidden in my room in my dresser...” She told her. Emily's mother just left within a poof of dust and was gone just like the rest of her world.
She woke up and look around to see Andrew next to her asleep Hanna was sucking on a binkie and making baby noises giggling. She got up and looked her, she was beautiful and Emily smiled she was doing a good job. She looked up and remembered what her mother told her in her dream. She walked into her mom's room unsteady, opening the top draw of her dresser she dug through the clothes on top and saw 680 dollars in a stack there. She gasped, it wasn't just a dream she thought to herself, although she didn't really need the money though she got life insurance paying her for both her parents deaths. Andrew grabbed her shoulder and scared her, “Jeez Andrew! Scare me to death!!” She yelled hitting him lightly.
“Ha ha sorry Emie,” He laughed, “..Hey why don't we take Hanna for a walk today?” He smiled, She nodded her head and smiled, they got something to eat and then took Hanna out for a walk. Emily was carrying her as they walked down the road, “Emily, how are you?” Andrew asked in a serious voice.
“Andrew, I'm fine.. It's just been rough everything is okay. Let talk about something else?” She said looking up at the sunny sky. They walked to the park, where they had met when they were only 7 years old, “I think we should call some of your family to help, we can't do this alone you know.” He stated.
“Andrew! No I hate all my family none of them are going near me or Hanna!” She was a little angry but calmed down almost instantly. After they got back inside she got a call from her Aunt Cindy.
“What do you want?” Emily barked as she answered the phone, she hated her aunt she was so mean.
“You and your sister are coming to live with me. As I take care of your insufferable mother's funeral.” She stated in one of the meanest ways,
“No! I'm never going near you and neither is Hanna.” She was ready for an argument but didn't want one.
“Fine. I'll just call child services to take you and your sister away, it's not that much trouble.” She was a snotty person, Emily hung up. If Emily could find someone in 2 days than she was going to be separated from her sister and shipped away to who knows where.
“Andrew we need to find someone old enough to be 'taking care' of me and Hanna.. Any ideas??” She asked trying to stay calm.
“Yeah.” He smiled within a few minutes his mother was over and pretending to take care of things. The Child Services called and she answered it they came within a few minutes and saw everything was okay and left. It worked, after that she would come by and help every few days, but Emily and Andrew were like mother and father to Hanna. While she was 16 they told her the story about it and she didn't seem to mind didn't change the fact that they were like mother and father to her.
