Serious info on heart attacks
This information is not only of benefit to older members, but to younger family members who may live with them.
I was aware of the benefits of aspirin with regard to heart attacks, but this information expands on that.
Dr. Virend Somers is a Cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic and is the lead
author of the report in the July 29, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 A.M. and noon. Having one during the night, when the heart should be most at rest, means that something unusual happened.
Somers and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that sleep apnea is to blame.
1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night.
The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour "half-life"; therefore, if most heart attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin in would be strongest in your system.
2. FYI, Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest for years,
(when it gets old, it smells like vinegar).
Please read on.
Something that we can do to help ourselves -nice to know.
Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue. They work much faster than the tablets.
Why keep Aspirin by your bedside? It's about Heart Attacks -
There are other symptoms of a heart attack, besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin,as well as nausea and lots of sweating; however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.
Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack. The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during their sleep did not wake up.
However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep. If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with
a bit of water. Afterwards: - Call 911. - Phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by.
- Say "heart attack!" - Say that you have taken 2 Aspirins.
- Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and ...DO NOT LIE DOWN!

Todays Meal is:
Broccoli and Stilton (Blue vein cheese) Soup
This might sound a bit strange at first, but Ill tell you right now that I make this soup all the time, and I love it. Its really easy to make too, and is perfect for an entrée or as a light meal. The recipe I use is by Nigella Lawson.
Ingredients:
3 tablespoons garlic infused olive oil (if you don't have this you can just use normal olive oil)
6 spring onions, finely chopped (I sometimes replace this with a leek if i don't have the spring onions)
2 teaspoons dried thyme
1 kilograms frozen broccoli (If you can, use fresh though, as it is far more nutritious fresh than it is frozen)
1250 ml vegetable stock (hot (from concentrate or cube)
100 grams stilton cheese (crumbled or chopped)
1 pinch of black pepper
1 long red chilli pepper, deseeded & finely chopped (optional)
Method:
1. Put the garlic oil in a large pan over a medium heat, add the chopped spring onions and cook for a couple of minutes.
2. Add the thyme and the broccoli, and stir in the heat for a minute or so.
3. Add the hot vegetable stock and the crumbled or chopped Stilton and bring to a bubble, then clamp on the lid and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the broccoli is soft.
4. Pour into a bender and blend until smooth, then pour back in the pan and heat if it's cooled too much while blending, and add pepper to taste.
5. If you want, scatter with a finely cut red chilli.
Enjoy, Sal xx

chicken ...
Units: US
4 chicken thighs
Spice Rub
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons ground turmeric
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder (can go down to 1/2 - I looove garlic..)
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
2 tablespoons olive oil (enough to coat the bottom of a skillet and a 9x5 baking dish)
Directions:
1. In a shallow dish, stir together all spices and 1 teaspoon salt. Coat chicken thighs with spice mix.
2. Warm the oil in a skillet and pan-fry chicken thighs, making sure each side is nicely browned.
3. Transfer chicken thighs to a greased (butter or olive oil) 9x5 baking dish. If you have any remaining spice mix, feel free to sprinkle it over the thighs, as this will reduce to a nice gravy. Put in pre-heated oven at 375 for 45 minutes, or until juices run clear.
4. Serve with basmati rice or couscous.
