This is for driving right? It may seem tough but to be fair it would be terrible to have a grand mal on the roads.

Affectionate intellectually disabled child diagnosis Von: Polkad0t

Hi! So I have a teenage boy that is intellectually deficient, he looks normal but has the mental age of a 5 year old. He is super affectionate though! He is just like a boy that never transgressed from that period with an innocent mind and always wanting to play and have fun. So... I'm wondering, what condition could I describe this as? Autism isn't quite right since the child is super social ( more like a regular outgoing... mehr anzeigen

Global developmental delay maybe?

S. K. Wilson

That's kind of generic term, I've usually seen it alongside other diagnoses, but it would fit.

S. K. Wilson

Or maybe William's syndrome?

S. K. Wilson

Sorry to be bombarding this thread, I was just thinking back to what I know about William's syndrome, and I think this would be perfect for your character. People with it do have a kind of definable almost elfish features, but I don't believe people would realize this unless you... mehr anzeigen

Is there a variation of OCD that shows up more during other anxiety triggers? I have a character I want to be mildly OC most of the time, but any time he has to deal with family-related stress, the condition gets worse. Is this at all plausible? Maybe there's something similar you can suggest. Basically, I want a physically evident neurosis or psychosis that doesn't disrupt life too much except in certain situations.

So it's a group, not a member with a strange name:) Great!

Yes...very briefly, just WHY do human genes begin to fail like clockwork? Why do we grow old and die?

In short:

In long:

This is sometimes called the "oxygen paradox,'' since oxygen is both necessary for — and dangerous to — living organisms.

A free-radical molecule consists of two linked atoms of oxygen with an odd number of electrons in its system, not... mehr anzeigen

Cells need to replicate themselves constantly to maintain their normal function, some with a lower turn-over than others, others never turn over (major neurons). When cells turn-over they copy the predecesor, mother to daughter cell, mother to daughter cell, over and over. The... mehr anzeigen

This could be a wee bit gross, so i apologize in advance. But I have a story I'm working on where the character gets burned, like 5cm by 5cm ish. I tried googling all of this and decided what I wanted to do was get my character to develop cellulitus from it. There are still heaps of things im not sure about though

Specifically:

How long does the infection take to become hospital worthy (week, days?)

What would happen (outside of... mehr anzeigen

I don't know too much on burns but I can can give you a couple of crucial facts.

After receiving some large and even hideous, perhaps even black burns, the person will not feel it initially. They will think thay are fine, in a crisis situation they may even lend a hand since... mehr anzeigen

Oh, you probably already know this but I thought I should just add: for minor burns vitamin E creams are incredibly beneficial as well as running water but deeper ones, hospital!

Burns are worse than they initailly look. They kill people hours after, days after. They are... mehr anzeigen

Well because this group hasn't received much lime-light I thought I would impart it with a fun fact.

Do you know the Rihanna song: Diamonds, with its, oh-so-catchy line: Shine Bright Like a Diamond?
Well diamonds in the sky is a very possible and real thing, only... a sun needs to die to achieve it. A smaller sun that first dies with a massive red swell before contracting back into super dense carbon, ie: a super-massive... mehr anzeigen

Or you could head to Neptune or Uranus where conditions are such that it could possible be raining diamonds.

Currently, one of the books I am outlining has a main character with a genetic disorder and/or learning disabilities. I am contemplating writing the young adult male (early to mid-teens) with either Down's Syndrome or another chromosomal disorder.

Not having any experience, can anyone give me some insight into family, friends or acquaintances with this line of disorders and the hardships they go through? Also helpful would be... mehr anzeigen

Not too experienced on that front but I knew a guy once who had a little brother with autism. I was not so close to the guy but I had chatted with him on occasion and was shocked to learn after years that his sibling had autism. This guy was loud and attention-seeking, but still... mehr anzeigen

Hey! I'm in my third year working with children who have special needs. What kind of level are you looking at? I.e., are they verbal? Mobile? Behaviour issues?

i'm going to be massively generalizing here, but I haven't met someone with down syndrome who is not incredibly... mehr anzeigen

@Polkadot- I'm not sure why the brother was embarrassed about that situation, but people sometimes look at mental disabilities as a flaw or a "weakness" in their family tree, I suppose. Nothing could be further from the truth, but egos sometime rule our lives.

@Stephanie- That is... mehr anzeigen
