This story of choices reminds that many jazz musicians walked away from the
academy because the teaching methods were institutionalizing their creative
thought. Miles Davis is an example. He became great after being just ok on the
bandstand: the time spent with Charlie Parker instead of Juilliard pumped the
latent creative juice (and unfortunately toxic stuff as well got pumped). Duke
Ellington's first teacher was a Mrs Clinkscales; he learned a few things about
European styles, found they didn't work for him and went on to learn on the
bandstand from the likes of Willie the Lion Smith. Then he went on to become
the greatest musician in modern times.
Fortunately in most jazz schools today, their is an emphasis not on turning
out 'trained monkeys' but teaching to unleash creative musicianship.
