I am an author of young adult science fiction that features characters of
color. As an indie author, I receive little to no support from black readers.
Perhaps black parents should start looking past the big publishers and stop
begging the big guys to tell our stories. WE can also tell our own stories. I
have read the blogs of black comic book writers who try to sell at comic book
festivals; they say black parents pull their kids away from their tables and
re-direct them toward the bigger publishers. I don't have an issue with black
people going out in droves to support Marvel's ""Black Panther"" - we need
representation on that level also. But black indie writers and publishers
write the ""day-to-day"" tales of smaller struggles and dynamics in school,
church, the kitchen table, the front porch, mama's job, ghosts and adventures,
and that's every bit as important.

We sell on Facebook, at churches, at book cons and festivals. There's Maria
Hoskins and ""Christmas Night on the Farm"" in Arkansas, Marti Dumas and her
""Jaden Toussaint the Greatest"" series out of New Orleans, Dana Walton and
""Bo John's Family Reunion"". We're out there and we're struggling for
readers. Visit our tents and booths, go to our web sites, look on Amazon. We
want to maintain ownership of our heritage. Start looking for and support your
own and you'll find more daily richness and diversity!
