Many of these students will be able to vote in the next year or two. Most pay
taxes, whether sales tax or wage taxes. Why shouldn't they participate in
politics? They are the direct recipients of decades of NRA control of our
lawmakers. Lawmakers who ordinarily would support national, and more rigorous
background checks, will cave in the face of the NRA. Same situation with
assault weapons. I worked for the GOP in Congress in the late 80s. At that
time, the NRA was exericising its muscle to keep lawmakers in line, by
threatening to fund opponents in the primary. Many talked openly of hating
assault weapons, but fearing the wrath of the NRA.

Now, we have high-school students who do not cower in the face of the NRA.
They had to face down an AR-15, because of the NRA. They had to lose friends
and teachers, because of the NRA. They organized even as they evacuated. This
is the social-media generation. They know who to ask for help, and how to get
it. Don't believe that the adults are running the show. This is the Parkland
Students, with the innocence of believing that their voices can overcome the
NRA. Good for them, and good for our country!
