For me, the question regarding Williamson is whether he presents a view held
by a substantial portion of the electorate not otherwise represented in the
Atlantic's pages. He is offered as a ""conservative"" voice and not as an
""out-of-left (or right)-field"" voice. There's a place for the latter, too,
but that wouldn't be a steady gig; it would be a column taken from a different
fringe every month to stir things up. If the house conservative isn't
mainstream, he isn't the right guy for that job.

KW's a never Trumper, so that's a good thing. Conservative never Trumpers are
the Republican diaspora, and they need to stay in touch. But the Times has
David Brooks and Bret Stephens, and the Atlantic might have done better to
have followed that example. An audience not looking for affirmation will
likely tire of Mr. Williamson, although, I guess some readers will read him
for the same reason I used to watch Phil Donahue, to get their blood boiling
because being outraged is a rush.

I'm glad to have been exposed to Mr. Williamson by virtue of the brouhaha over
his hiring. But I'm already ready to move on. I won't cancel my subscription
to the Atlantic. But I will watch to see if his brand of ""conservatism"" has
legs.

Here we have the ultimate litmus test for an optimistic nature versus a
pessimistic one.

You can view the trend of current events in the US as a downward spiral that
will end in catastrophe, or you can view it as a rising fever that will break
and leave the country drenched in sweat but strong enough to recover and
impatient to do so.

I recognize the threat of continuing struggles with die-hard Trumpites and
with sundry enemies foreign and domestic. I don't say all will be well when
Donald Trump himself has been defeated, but I do think the fever model is the
applicable one. Call me an optimist.

I thought this was a hoot.

OK, so it's too short, not much of a storyline, we really don't know how detective J-Roc is able to see souls or how the girl died, and frankly, I wasn't too horrified. (Really, do you think a detective can get any business with a name like "J-Roc"? Maybe if he was already a famous rap-artist, but fame and detective-work don't work well together.)

But there is a charmingly disjointed flow here (especially in that first paragraph) that could be on the verge of something great with a little more work, and by reading the works of well-known authors like Stephen King. (I recommend "The Green Mile".) The best instruction for a beginning writer is reading great stories.

I am making a stab at horror too with my "Raley's Nebula" and "Royce with a V". Trying to crack that Stephen King code.
