This is a beautiful sad story that captured the feelings of Harold's despair and anguish and eventual surrender to what he knew would surely come You did it with such heart in the limit of words you had to play with. Another excellent story.

Thank you so much! I think it was ambitious to get it in 1000 words, I ended up having to cut a lot of the context stuff out which was unfortunate.
Harold's plight is told magnificently in such few words. The apprehension of the Keeper's arrival, the thoughts of Beth intertwined in his viewing of Barry's sentence being carried out, and finally the decision Harold has to inevitably make. You could not ask for a more gripping tease, of what should be a longer story.

Thanks! Ugh, it still needs a major edit! In the process of cutting it down to 1000 words, it lost a lot of flow and I'm not happy with it yet - but I will get there!
