David Brooks once again seeks a false equivalence between the GOP and
Democrats, mentioning a few Republicans he thinks demonstrate great character
(conveniently forget Iran-Contra and going to war with a country that didn't
attack us on 9/11 for having fictitious WMDs.)

Blaming the state of the GOP on Trump has it backwards: the declining morality
of the GOP created the opening for Trump. Before Trump, there were fools like
Sarah Palin and Dan Quayle and a long string of mediocre intellects. Since
long before Trump, the GOP has been lying to its base about the effects of its
fiscal policies, offering dog-whistles and using fear to gain votes.

Mitch McConnell is a heartless, evil man who didn't need Trump to do great
harm to this country. All the other spineless toadies that make up the GOP are
shockingly willing to go along. The GOP has long been the party of liars,
moralizing philanderers, gay-bashing closeted gays, and science-denying
fossil-fuel shills. They put party and power above the well-being of the
nation.

Democrats tend to put ideas, policies, and constituencies above party, which
is why they are never as united as the GOP. I often don't agree with them, but
they make an honest effort to govern. There's no equivalence, Mr. Brooks.

When are you finally going to abandon the GOP? Your clinging to this feckless
party does not speak well of your own morality.
