The middle story was the best. Try not to start sentences with the word 'But.'
In the last story, you tell us too much. For instance, 'his lovely wife.' A lovely wife isn't something to return to - a loving wife is. Have the protagonist show us his love for his wife without telling us, use his feeling so we can imagine his love for her.
