To those who are screaming about their Second Amendment rights: That amendment
does not grant you unlimited access to guns. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled
that it is subject to reasonable restrictions - and the high court has refused
to overturn lower court decisions that have upheld bans on assault weapons.
With 34,000 firearm deaths annually in the U.S. - with schools, churches,
concert venues, theaters and more becoming massacre sites - clearly something
must be done.
Here's just one slice of that astounding number: About 1,300 CHILDREN (up to
age 17) are fatally shot annually in the U.S. (almost 6,000 additional
CHILDREN are treated in ERs for gun-related injuries).
How we can find 34,000 gun deaths annually (be they suicides, homicides or
accidents) acceptable is beyond reason. No other western country has anywhere
near the rate of gun deaths that we have. Shame on us for allowing these
killing machines/weapons of war to proliferate.
What these kids are asking for is absolutely reasonable: Universal background
checks (NO loopholes) and a ban on assault-style weapons and high capacity
magazines.
Time's up.
