From the first page, your analogy of the shock hitting her like a hammer is very powerful. When you mention the nail and coffin, the tragedy hits home. I can almost feel her sense of disbelief. This is such a sad story. It is filled with the promise of what might have been.
I've heard the story of Anastasia before. Some people believe she survived and became Anna Anderson. I find this idea fascinating. I love historical... mehr anzeigen

that shows how low the human race can sink. Humans are meant to be reasoning, thinking animals, but we are so often seen to not be the most evolved species on earth. And your written piece shows the vast gap between the good and bad. Good writing Patrick.

Hannah, Beth, and everyone. The fact that you all read and commented does my heart good. The story, BASED on factual events, was difficult for me to write. I nearly wept when I read the historical account of the Romanov family's murders. I could not do the horror of it justice.

Pat, you've done it again. The Russian royal family -- and more to the point, their demise -- has always fascinated me, and you've done an amazing job of portraying it. Voted without hesitation, of course!

I read a book several years ago titled, "The Last Days of the Romanovs" by Helen Rappaport, an account of what happened during those horrifying last months. Particularly tragic and horrifying was the last day--the slaughter, and it was exactly that. I tried to write a fictional account that captured the unbelievable brutality of it.
The Bolsheviks were monsters of the highest order.
