A lifelong Catholic, I also stepped away from the church in my mid-30's. My
leaving was occasioned by personal matters but also by a feeling that Christ
""had not been heard from in years"" in our church. In discussing this with a
priest at the time, he acknowledged ""we had become a bit baroque."" Through
meeting some very good people, through prayer, reflection, study and spiritual
reading, I did return to the church.
Anger toward the RC church and its history is very real and understandable
more than ever, after the sexual abuse scandal. Sadly, the culture which
permitted that to happen still exists today and PF, I believe, has not truly
understood the effects on its victims. He needs to hear their stories just as
Christ heard the story and honored the personhood of the woman at the well;
knew the searing pain of Peter who betrayed Him and yet chose him to head the
church. The church has and does acknowledge women many who have become Doctors
of the Church, founded religious orders and school systems, nursed the
military on both sides during the Civil War, trekked across our country to
establish communities of faith, the courage and faith of so many--- all this
without becoming priests. Our church has become more political under PF and
many keep hoping that he will make the church what they want it to be. I
wonder then would it truly be Christ's church. By the way, Ms. Henkl,
Communion is given to those who are not only heterosexual.
