I am writing this out of a full heart. Please hear me out.

I am a retired high school teacher. I worked at a private school in
Philadelphia where the kids are mostly black. I still go in regularly to sub.

For me--for my family--for millions of Americans, election night was a night
of horror. You have your memories. I have mine. Enough said.

A few days later, we went into the city to visit our daughter. We took the
train. Got off. The station was crowded with black people. I looked at these
black people. I felt a physical pain in my heart. But we went on.

Still later, my daughter called up on the phone. We talked about the election.
The physical pain was there. It was bad. Worse than ever.

Till I started to cry. I sat there, sobbing over the phone. I could hardly get
the words out. Same feeling as back in that train station.

""We have let them down! Oh HOW--we have let them down!""

As I write this, I am addressing you black people right now.

""We have let you down. Oh HOW--we have let you down.

To which I can only add--with the utmost sincerity.

""God forgive us!"" And you, my black friends--my black colleagues--my black
students. If you can. . .you too. . .you too. . .

. . . . .forgive us.

We white folks. We need some forgiveness right now.

Badly. Very badly.
