So this is #71 in a series of early westerns (1880-1915) I’ve reviewed here at BITS over the past two years. To a list that started out with mostly male writers, I’ve been finding and adding numerous more women writers. When the whole list is accounted for, they will make up about one-third of it.
The single illustration from Marie Manning’s Judith of the Plains (right) would suggest that it’s another romance, but she’s got a lot more on her mind than that. Depending on how you count, there are two main plots and parts of at least two others. They overlap somewhat, though each has its own emotional center.
