If the purpose of a first chapter, or first pages, is to hook the reader, then Doherty has succeeded admirably.
I am on that bus, in dread. I am standing in that freezing quad, naked and fearful. What's to become of me? So, in transporting a reader from his/her easy chair into a frightening reality, an author succeeds.
Doherty has done just that.
