Tom Brown's childhood was anything but innocent. His mother was a runaway at sixteen who had met a 'super hot man in the coolest costume ever' early one Halloween morning with whom she spent the entire day with and came away with Tom as a 'party gift'. But instead of aborting him like she had her previous pregnancies, she carried Tom to full term -- only to discover that the man she had that fling with wasn't exactly human. Her son is born with orange eyes and a pair of bat-like wings on his back, and is able, from a young age, to fly and see things of the unseen world. But instead of freaking out like the doctors and nurses, Tom's mom embraces his weirdness and vows to protect him.

The problem is the very traits that had drawn an imp to her are also the very characteristics that make it so Helene Brown is unable to stay out of trouble. When Tom is five years old, almost six, she is arrested for a rather petty crime, which puts her in prison for a year while her son is forced to live with the very family she had run away from... and run away for good reason. 

This story is about Tom, not the mom, and how he gets through it until his mother is out again.
