As teacher for 39 years with multiple offers but little interest in becoming a
principal I have found that most principals are career educators more
interested in power (consolidation and advancement) than in the quality of
teaching. My experience has taught me that school boards in particular, are
the cancer of public education. The best teachers have a difficult time
because power flows from the top down – with career educators telling
experienced teachers – what it’s all about. At the end of their journey ask
the kids who made the biggest difference in their learning, it’s not the
principal, it’s the teacher. Power needs to be redistributed so that the best
teachers are recognized and not denigrated. I was told by my superintendent
that she should never have hired me. I still get letters from my students.
