The illustrations by Siera Tomczak in The Color of Beauty are very realistic. She adds so many tones, shadows, and highlights that really give contrast and bring the illustrations to life. The poetry or musings on color by Goob are very well written. The author explains how we need all colors to make a painting, just as we need people of all colors to make up the world. Author Goob takes us on an adventure of removing some colors because he doesn’t like them or they’re not needed and ends up with a painting of just his favorite color, but quickly realizes something’s missing. We need a variation of colors to add detail like shadows and sheen.
The Color of Beauty is an entertaining and educational study of colors and their importance in a painting. A painting needs a variety of colors, tones, and shadows to add clarity and detail to the image. In the end, author Goob compares the colors with our society, and how we need all the colors on canvas or skin to create a palette to be enjoyed by everyone. The Color of Beauty is a wonderful story on diversity, but also the use of color in artwork. Author Goob’s poetic musings and Siera Tomczak’s beautiful illustrations are a winning combination in creating a book that will be enjoyed by school-aged children and adults. If we didn’t have both light colors and dark colors, we would have a very bland piece of artwork.
