I doubt populism would go very far without a parallel rise in plutocracy. And
I doubt plutocracy would get far without the supporting cast we see here in
the US: unlimited dark money in politics, the lobbyist class, monopolists,
rentiers, laissez faire fundamentalism, the perversion of news into
entertainment, etc. Useful lessons in eliminating this supporting cast of
characters can be found in our own history. Probably the longer we postpone
cleansing these corrupt supporting actors in populism, the more entrenched
they become. This seems to be the situation now in Italy. We should all note,
and shiver, that in the 20th century it took a world war to finish the job of
removing enough corruption that the patient was able to survive.
