Pocatello, Idaho
Dakota,
I support your right to own a firearm for use on your farm and for hunting.
Contrary to what many gun owners say, people like me— a person who would
surely be labeled a ""liberal"" by most gun enthusiasts— I do not desire to
take your guns away. I do however, expect a higher level of regulation of
these tools, and that would include the banning of semiautomatic sporting
rifles. As a hunter, wouldn't you agree that nobody needs this type of weapon
to hunt? It may be ""cool"" but that alone is no reason for a civilian to own
a weapon of this kind, no matter how responsible you/they may be.
I'm sorry to hear you feel you are feared and misunderstood by other students.
That's not fair. I would argue that you are the victim of the small minority
of gun owners who are extremely vocal (and whose voices are amplified
unrealistically by the NRA) and who regularly exaggerate and create fake news,
insert slippery-slope arguments into the issue, and call for Civil War on a
regular basis.
I suggest you continue to speak about your own thoughts on gun ownership,
which would include differentiating yourself from the above mentioned group.
Rational, responsible gun owners like yourself have a responsibility to step
into this conversation because it's been dominated by the minority long
enough.
I wish you the best, Dakota.
