When I hear someone preface a statement by “Speaking as a Latina. …” or
“Speaking as a queer person. …” or “Speaking as a Jew. …”, I don't think of it
as explaining the derivation of their opinion. I hear it as a presentation of
credentials, usually to imply that their opinion is worth more than mine
because of who they happen to be.
