Numbers, measurements, facts - everyone knows these things have a liberal
bias. Trump understands intuitively that what his base 'feels' is true is much
more important that what is actually truth. After all, many of them will swear
that the Bible is the literal truth, and the 'feel' that our government should
model is laws on that 'truth'. Trump understands that when you con someone,
the very last thing you want to do is have them seek outside, independent
verification of what you're telling them to believe. One of Trump's very
common trite statements is ""Believe me!"" - and anytime you hear that, you
should run quickly to seek independent outside verification of whatever he's
saying, because it is almost always independently verifiable as false. Trump
lies reflexively, and convincingly because he's done it all his life and no
longer actually has any concrete idea when he's lying, and when he's actually
saying something that he believes is truth. Trump probably believes that the
US runs a trade deficit with Canada, and if he believes it 'in his gut' it
must be truth, no matter that the numbers and measurements tell otherwise.
After all, Trump can make up numbers all day long - who's to say that other
numbers are not equally made-up? In a Trump environment, there is no truth, no
fact, nothing but one belief or another belief. Truth becomes what you believe
in that moment, and in another moment if you believe instead something
entirely different and contradictory, well and good.
