I hope the passionate young people who marched and shared their grief
understand that it's not enough to change Congress. The constitutionality of
laws passed by Congress, especially those that affect an amendment in the Bill
of Rights, is often challenged in court. Many times these cases come before
the Supreme Court (SCOTUS). Heller (2010) and McDonald (2012), both cases that
loosened gun control, were 5 to 4 decisions.

Several SCOTUS justices will likely retire before the next presidential
election in 2020 thereby giving Trump the opportunity to appoint very
conservative replacements a la Neil Gorsuch. The court could be conservative
for decades, making it unlikely that Heller and McDonald would be reversed.

Although the students repeatedly said that gun control is non-partisan, it's
clear that by and large Democrats favor gun control while Republicans do not.
The students and people somewhat older than them would be wise to accept this
so they can help elect enough Democratic senators that control of the Senate
is in Democratic hands. With Democrats in control of the Senate the tactics
Mitch McConnell used to block President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland
could be used to stymie Trump's conservative appointees. A Democratic Senate
and President in 2021 could then appoint justices that would consider
reversing Heller and McDonald, along with reversing Citizens United (money in
politics) and Shelby v Holder, which gutted the voting rights act.
