'Darling' but the tadpole attitude was there. I can see the subconscious longing for the unknown but wanting the comfort of the norm.

Very typical childhood ruminations which I think most adults don't remember. Children always balk against change, throw themselves into the present, forgetting it was the change they didn't want, but if they do realize it, it is shrugged off - great insight [or remembrance] into the mind of a ten year old.

I bet he'll remembers the baseball card longer than the face of the girl in the blue dress...Paula

Your story was lovely, Brian. Definitely very British and should appeal to the younger set. My only complaint is....I wanted him to meet the girl and see what happened. But I guess that is another story. Yes, you may steal my cat...but remember, there are plenty of kitties on Google.com that you can download if you want. All the best.
