the story is traditional Gaelic from the west coast of Scotland and I am sorry but it just ends with him finding the moth dead with singed wings under the rosebush.

Encounters with fairies often come with conditions that if broken result in some sort of collapse of the illusion, or the special world created by the encounter. Belief in the fairies was very strong in the Celtic area, especially Scotland and Ireland ; the stories are still popular today and some still believe. Broonies, trolls, elves, elvar, leprechauns, Finnfolk , these are all creatures who inhabit a sort of parallel universe to us in British and other European folklore.

It is interesting you should be worried about the fisherman, it shows you have become emotionally involved in the story . Does Catriona deserve him? After all she has destroyed his own true love. Is she just a jealous girl or really a witch, or another, bad, fairy who had knowledge of how to kill the good fairy?

One thing you can do is tell the story to some others and get them to discuss all aspects including what might have happened afterwards.
What was the motivation behind each characters actions? This sort of discussion will help your writing.

hi alice, thanks for friend request. the experts always say write about what you know. i think that is too shallow, but there is some truth in it. maybe we write about what we experience and everyone experiences things differently. .i think your location is a big influence for example , are you rural or urban ? I live on a group of 70 islands so the sea and the shore have an influence. But then again i set stories in the places i visit such as Italy so location does not limit you especially if you write fantasy, Also incidents in your family life and community can either be worked in as they are or recast into a new location. reading a lot is good so you see styles. Studying character and situations now becomes potential material for a story. Overhearing peoples' conversations for phrases and incidents is legit.. keep a notebook handy, jot things down and keep them like scrabble pieces to reassemble later! i use the net as well for authentic background, names , dates, and if it is a historical piece this becomes even more important as there is always someone who will trip you up on incorrect detail.

a lot of stuff goes in , does it have to come out?

a good sort of trigger for getting started is to write about something mundane like a leg or or an arm or an eye. quite quickly you will see that the story is not just about the leg or arm etc but starts to come alive take a shape of its own I strongly believe that folklore and myth .is a really important study for writers, as it explores the archetypes ie, eg the good mother the evil mother, dominant father, the desires of human beings for power,love, hate and so on.
for example a story called The White Moth from the Highlands of Scotland is about love, longing and jealousy., but it is also about light as a potent force,moth behaviour,purity,mystery,fairies, shape changing,location. So to our story;

A young fisherman lives alone in a small cottage by the shore. He longs for a wife. One soft warm night he opens his cottage door for some air and from the rose bush at the door a moth flutters in to his cottage. It is drawn to the candle on the table . He watches as it flutters closer then suddenly it touches the flame. In an instant the white moth is turned
into a beautiful girl.
I will be your wife, she says, but only on one condition; you must never light a candle in this room or i will disappear. You must see by the firelight.

Well they were very content together but a girl from up the Glen seeing no light in the young fishermans cottage, but hearing singing coming from within, deduced that he had got a fairy wife of a certain kind.
Now this girl Catriona,had wanted the fisherman and had already decided he was hers so she plotted to get him back. she waited until the fisherman went to sea in his little boat then knocked on his cottage door. The wife inside was kindly and invited her in .
Catriona entered the darkened room , remarking it is very dark in here. The fisherman's wife said nothing about that but offered a cup of tea. Catriona said that would be nice. But as the fishermans wife turned to the kettle on the hearth, Catriona struck a match and lit the candle.
The fishermans fairy wife let out a shriek and found herself drawn back to the candle and touching it she shrivelled before Catriona's eyes and fell on the table as a white moth .

Catriona stood for a moment then swept the moth into her hand and carried it out of the cottage door and threw it ; it landed on the rose bush.

When the fisherman returned he called and searched for his wife for many days but one day, lying at the foot of the rose bush., he noticed the white moth with shrivelled wings.
